After 43000 miles on my 06 the check pads message finally came on. I have looked around for new pads and rotors...husband has picked out some for me but I am concerned about sizing info. Over on vortex, brake specs (thanks Spockcat) according code on sticker by spare (1LC) shows 330mm size, yet the specs for the rotors my DH has picked out (via an autoparts site that lists parts for 06 v8 with 18" wheels)) say 350mm. Before I order, can anyone verify what size I should be ordering? I have 18" wheels. Fronts are what have to be replaced (dealer said at 39000 miles rears had lots of life left).

Thanks for all the DIY info here. DH is going to do the job.

Yep you have 330mm front and back.

little advise. Do not buy the cheap pads on ebay.

Buy Geoffs stuff or get hawks with zimmerman rotors

Only way to be sure is to look on your options sticker for the brake coding.
We have seen runout models on big disks from the next run and new modles on smaller disks from previous runs etc. We have also had 2 or 3 V10's in with 330mm's on and atleast 1 V10 with 350front and 330 rear.
Ther are also a few TDI's out that even have a funny offset on the disks.
If yu can't work the codes then a friendly call to a vw dealer with your vin and they will be able to tell you.

Thanks, guys.

My first thought was to go with Alretta but DH likes EBC stuff (past experience). All their specs list 13.8 dia on front for v8 with 18" wheels (=350mm). Anyone know if going to dimpled/slotted or "performance" rotors would make a difference in sizing? DH is pretty knowledgable about this stuff and is of the opinion that if I got 40000 miles out of the OEM stuff then I could most like do twice as good with "better" stuff. I am not a heavy brake user.

Any and all thoughts appreciated!

DH should give Alretta a shot. Geoff owns a Touareg and has sold untold numbers of pads and rotors to his fellow owners. You tell him the year and engine of your ride and he will send to you every nut, bolt, and part needed to do the complete job (not just the pads and rotors). No running to the parts store because an unexpected clip needs to ge replaced. Additionally, his customer service and support is second to none.

We own a repair shop and see a fair number of Audi and VW passenger vehicles along with our RV and truck customers. We purchase all our brake parts from Geoff.

Don't waste your money on the drilled/slotted rotors. Go to Geoff and get your package there. Many here have purchased from him and have not regretted it. You have a V8 so you only have 330mm rotors. As was said above the V10 is the only one with 350mm rotors.

So this IS a possibility for V10 owners who want to run smaller than 18" wheels...?
I guess one could downgrade on calipers and go 330 mm

maybe a V8 guy will swap out his stuff with a V10 owner who wants smaller brakes?

Make life easy for yourself.... get it touch with Geoff at Alretta and let him get you dialed in. If you go elsewhere... that's you're business... but there are A LOT of people on this forum who have done business with Geoff and I don't recall hearing about one complaint.

Thanks for the kind words, y'all!

(checks are in the mail...)

BTW, ladytregdriver, there is only one North American front brake option for your vehicle, and any parts supplier that suggests otherwise simply doesn't know their business! I say this with the firm knowledge that I have never once sent any client the wrong Touareg brake parts.... this is not an optionable characteristic on these vehicles sold here, although it is optionable in Germany and perhaps elsewhere in the world. (There is no 350mm rear brake option, implied by the UK based writer... even the 2003-2005 Porsche Cayenne Turbos get a 330mm rear. As for a 330mm V10 front, sorry, not here, and frankly, why would you want that? There will be some additional brake options for Porsche, but nothing that affects you.)

Call me, or have your DH call me, and I will offer a view as to why EBC is not necessary or perhaps, even desirable?

Good weekend!

Thanks so much for the info. I had decided that whatever I ordered was going to be the 330mm front regardless of the posted wheel size. DH took the wheel off and measured the darn thing:).

I spent most of my day yesterday researching EBC stuff and they sound pretty good. The best thing I noticed about them seemed to be the increase in stopping power.

Any guesses to how long I have before I HAVE to get these things replaced? The light came on a week ago and I probably drive 150-200 miles a week. I'll admit it makes me nervous seeing that warning.

Geoff, what would be a good time to call (if I can get my DH to do so)? We are in Central time.

My last plug is go with KVR carbon fiber pads. I've used the extensively in the tropics (Hawaii) and here in Alaska on a major modified Durango which is in the same weight range though not hp (380hp ram air) and have nothing but kudos for them. They are absolutely silent, produce hardly any dust and are extremely long lasting. In pair with my Brembo cross drilled rotors they will stop on a dime and give you change. I've tried the Hawks on my D and they squeal like there's no tomorrow and the brake dust is annoying. Carbon fiber is what's used in F1 and for a reason. They're expensive but wel worth it IMHO.

Just my 2 cents and 35 years of working on cars (and no I don't get paid by KVR). If it works in Alaska it'll work where you are trust me.

At 52K miles, Just re-shoed ours after 4K miles since sensor alarmed. On the front, Still had about 3/16 pad thickness so a lot more driving was available.

I chose to just re-shoe for now as my rotors still have some thickness in the acceptable range to go. The fronts not so much but the rear quite a bit still.

Geoff has got the stuff and I intend to get his front and rear kits in another 10K or so miles. He has one way to do it and that is the right way...This time I chose a different way. Check the Problems and Annoyances section for my recent thread "Cheap Brake job = Trouble?" and you can learn more than you want or need to know. Like my independent shop owner said..."It's just brakes".

ps...Geoff's prices are pretty good as well considering

Strange I run hawks as you might know.
My new ones have been on there for over 1000 miles with clean wheels and with the almost 60k on hawks never a squeal

Decent 18" Off road rubber is a problem. Hard to find, very expensive and a big compromise IMO. Not to mention 19" and 20".

Luckily I don't have either a V10 or 18" wheels... :D

... but if I did have a V10, I WOULD consider putting 330mm discs on the front, especially if some V10's were built like that. IMO that means VW approve.

On the other hand, there's a reason why the V10's have 350mm discs and we all know what that is, so 330mm would ALSO be a compromise.

A late comment to this thread...but I just received front brake package from Geoff...
There is NO reason to go anywhere else. He knows his stuff and what I received is just what I need.
To repeat the answers above, the V8 has 330mm.
