How long do they typically last. I don't think mine are an issue but they might be wearing now that the car has 77K miles. I would think they could last up to 100K miles depending on road conditions and what you have done with your treg!

Just curious on when most fail. Mine seem good but also seem a bit harsh over pot holes or cracks and such. Maybe I just don't know the car that well yet. :)

If I need to replace I will most likely go with KONI
Thanks

Shocks aren't a wear problem, which is why you don't see any posts about it.

x2 on nickm. The only times I really recall seeing threads about shocks are from those whose air shocks have failed either with the air bag on them bursting or the inlet valve on the front shocks corroding and snapping.

Time to Replace?

Alf I hear you on the shocks. I have 156K on mine and they are showing their age in terms of ride and comfort compared to70k miles ago. I too have not seen much here and it must be because OEM hang in there pretty good. At those prices they should.

So I was thinking of a set of OEM or Konis over the winter.

Hope this will generate some feedback

I have a 2013 Sport (steel suspension springs) , and I wondered about it, but I would notice a bad shock from rebound action dampening.

For the non-air suspension, if you look at the shock tower closely, you would see any oil leaking from the seal and down the side of the shock, and know it would be time to replace.

If they last over 100K miles, I would also stick with OE shocks.

I haven't seen any posts or threads on here with anyone with a 2011/T3 having their shocks/struts replaced yet.

I have just over 44,000 miles on my 2012 and it still rides/handles well so I'm not changing yet. My Treg rides a little nicer than my wifes 2015 which is firmer and also handles better because of it.

At the first sign when I notice something I don't like about the ride/handling, I'll be changing them out but till then, I'll not do anything.

There's no oil in the OEM shocks, they are gas shocks/struts. You won't see an oil leak, it'll just bounce around if a leak develops.

They pretty much last forever other than the aforemention airbag bursts...I can't even recall seeing a non a/s shock/strut how to on here.

ALL shocks contain oil. All of them. The nitrogen gas charge is used to keep the dampening oil from cavitating and creating bubbles in the oil when the piston is moving quickly so the shock performance is consistent.

Check Bilstien, Monroe, Gabriel, etc websites if you need to see how shocks work. There are some really good sites that show cutaways and operation.

Even air shocks have dampening oil. Even motorcycle gas charged shocks have oil.

When the seals leak, the nitrogen gas charge can start leaking, but the oil will get pushed out first. End result is NO MORE DAMPENING so your vehicle will just bounce on the springs.

Toolman x2.

For a shocker to work it needs an incompressible medium to transfer some of the kinetic energy generated by the moving suspension to the frame of the vehicle rather than being reflected back to the spring. If it was "gas only" nothing would work, as gas is compressible and is no capable of transferring the level of energy required for the shocker to function.

Thanks. I would like to upgrade the suspension. I am not sure I want to go with Bilstein even though that seems to be the only option. I don't want KW coilovers, no plans to lower it, that's not what this thing is made for. Koni has nothing unless I can use the Porsche or Q7 if they have them for those applications? Koni FSD for Q7 should work unless it's too weak for the TDI motor. But I want the Sports to be honest! But the FSD should be nice!

I rather have KONI to be honest. Am I missing any other options?

Looking to keep the 17" wheels to but go 265/65/17.... more to come.

I'm at 48,000 miles and am starting to think about new shocks/struts. I notice the truck rebounding just a bit more than when I had first gotten it.

The ride is nice but I also like the control.

The wife's 2015, at 10,000 miles is still firm and nice. I want that back.

I did notice this in my 2012 that had 60k miles, the rear was much bouncier than a 2013 with 30k miles I rode and another 2014 R-Line with 50k miles too...

I think anyone who feels this should get either New oem shocks or maybe FSD (I have them in my BMW and I love them) + Porsche sway bars. This combination should make you love your truck again.

Don't expect the same life from the Koni than OEM but they ride real nice

+1 on the Cayenne sway bars!

Stock Shocks

I just completed a four corner swap of shocks on my 2010 TDI. The original shocks went for 160,000 miles. I looked at after market brands and tried to balance the pluses and minuses of each and settled on the longevity and balanced purposes of the original items. Plus any other worn parts would all be replaced with the proper items. Comments on the forum were helpful as well.

Picked it up this afternoon and noticed a HUGE difference, much more planted and yet rides very nice. Going to replace the sway bar bushings next week and that will take care of the last "noisy" part of the suspension. Summer sneakers will be put on next week.

Looking forward to another 150,000 miles of happy motoring.
