If the allegation is true VW deserves to get slapped upside the head.

I'm more curious about how a "fix" will affect performance & MPG. Can't be any upside for TDI owners except emissions compliance. Will there be class action lawsuits over diminished vehicle value and fraudulent sales claims?

An EPA spokesperson said this is "an opening salvo" against VW. Wondering if the 3.0L TDI is next.

Ugh...must be quite the weekend in Wolfsburg.

Oh yeah. They're probably frantically piecing together all the details: Who authorized this, who knew about it and when, and what to do about it now.

Of course if their internal investigation shows that the EPA claims are wrong, maybe we'll see a very spirited defense from VW. Well, it could happen.

I wonder if the emissions control system's level of active management changes with driving conditions & situations, and something about the EPA test process puts the system into overdrive mode. Or is the test process an accurate simulation of normal driving.

And how would the system know it's being tested? They must be doing more than just monitoring what comes out of the tailpipe.

Yep. Looking forward to VW's response. Lots of bravado from the EPA. I am sure there is fault on VW but I also think the EPA is chest-thumping, too.

This really is interesting, and something I am going to be watching carefully. I drove a 2010 Jetta TDI for three years and loved it. I was hard to sell with only 36k when we had purchased it new (needed a much bigger car) and after zero issues. Now I am almost glad we did because if this plays out that this recall must be performed (I live in an emissions state) it might very well impact performance and mpg so much that I wouldn't enjoy it. Oh well, now I have a "big" V8 VW that sets off the carbon monoxide alarm in my garage every time I start it...plus I have the old muscle car smell on cold mornings when I start it up too...good old unburned gasoline. I love my V8...funny thing is it is compliant...or so we all think...

...We don't have all the facts yet, VW hasn't officially responded...
Not true.

VW has responded: VOLKSWAGEN STATEMENT REGARDING EPA INVESTIGATION : Volkswagen US Media Newsroom

And, according to the EPA, has admitted to using a "defeat" device (bottom of 2nd paragraph, page 4): http://www3.epa.gov/otaq/cert/documents/vw-nov-caa-09-18-15.pdf

The applicable sentence from the EPA starts with "Only then did VW admit it has designed and installed a defeat device..."

:-(

Lighten up, Francis. VW admitted rigging the system to the EPA. We still have not heard VW's response to the story other than it is committed to fixing the issue. Like others have written, let's see how this plays out.

Sounds like somebody is going to get a whooping.

Well, the TDI's were getting over the EPA mileage. I bet they will get around the EPA mileage after the Fix!

Can't be any upside for TDI owners except emissions compliance. Will there be class action lawsuits over diminished vehicle value and fraudulent sales claims?
Will class action lawyers sue?
Will a dog lick a meat bone?

There has to more to it than less MPG with a fix (reflash). I bet it has to involve the longevity of the DPF, EGR and turbo. VW didn't have this software algorithm to increase the TDI's fuel economy by a couple MPG. I think it has more to do with keeping these cars out of the dealership service department and all the warranty claims.

Read thru the entire thread at the TDI forums. The upshot is:
1. Mileage will drop to at least EPA levels, perhaps more.
2. Acceleration and Torque will be diminished.
3. Longevity of the Engine will be decreased.
4. EGR will be turned way up, having negative effects of #2 and #3.
5. Also remember a comment with a common intercooler problem that they felt would become much worse with any proposed fix.

"I want them all immediately transferred to China.
They don't care about pollution there.
We sell more autos there anyway! "

LOL. The video was well done.
