Thanks David for the extensive explanation. I replaced my front left window regulator this weekend and this took me about 8 hours in total (i'm sure it can be done faster but i took the time for the job).

Some pointers from my side:
*l disconnected all of the cables and by labelling them i was able to quite easily connect them again after installing the regulator
*I used 5mm rivets with a 14mm reach to connect the regulator to the window frame.
*I had to disconnect the window frame twice because the main wire cable was positioned under the the lower arm instead of in between both arms

Good luck to anyone else undertaking this job, you will be proud the first time you lower the window while driving!

Hi Dave,

Great explanation on replacing the regulator.

I have a problem with my '05 where the driver side door handle has broken off and I need to replace it and the master window switch at the same time as the pass. side button is broken.

In your original post, you mentioned that to remove the door panel, you removed four screws and lifted the panel out of its channel. But aren't there any fasteners or clips to pull out as well?

I really hate having to pull the door panel just to replace a window switch, but..oh well.

Thanks again.

Yes - there's the usual pop-out clips. I mention the screws so that someone doesn't just pull on the cover and expect it to pop off.

ALSO - consider using some bolts with lock-tite when installing the regulator instead of pop-rivets. After about a year the rivets worked loose on mine and the regulator dropped down far enough that the window got stuck half way open. I didn't have to do a full replacement or anything, just put in some small bolts w/ thread sealer like Lock-Tite.

I said I never wanted to get into that door again, but I've been in there 4 times now.

Bumping an old thread. I just removed and replaced my passenger front door window regulator/rail assembly and appreciate this thread to help me get the job done. My approach was a little different in that I did not disconnect the door lock cable/harness. My one complaint was the fact that the prior owner of my Treg had this job done in the past and two of the three door spacers were broken. (part number 7L0837346A) These things were pricey to replace :frown2: They also didn't line up the frame correctly as the top portion of the door frame did not seal correctly. (I though the door was in a accident but it wasn't.) Glad I was able to line it up much better and the interior wind noise is gone.
I opted to use pop-rivets on the top portion of the new window rails and screws with nylon nuts at the bottom end. Overall, it wasn't too difficult to do but you definitely need patience.

Broken regulator :anger:

Fixed and ready for install :joy:
