Hi, Any one has similar problem or know what might be the cause. My 2004 V8 wheels jerks/jump a when I take off after I park it does it in both forward and reverse and teh steering wheel is turned. Basically the wheels jerk and make noise as if the car in 4X4 low or the hubs are locked.. It goes away immediately after I start driving. I am thinking the differential is slipping or it is transfer case issue. Any suggestion?

It could be the power steering unit not working correctly...we had a car that did that and that was the problem....but it was not a Touareg.
To the OP, I certainly hope you solve your issue with this please repost and let us all know what was wrong.

However our Touareg don't jerk but
I notice when we take off from our driveway it feels as tho its in low gear for a second...before it shifts , is this the way it should do?... other than that everything seems to be fine its like the tranny is waking up or something...just an instant when we first take off feels like the tourg is in low gear then shifts out within 15 20 ft or so
should we take it in to a dealer or just wait see what happens?
maybe its suppose to do that?

Really does read as tho' it's the stepper motor.

It is for the center diff since not all have a locking rear diff. They have replaced them as well as done software updates on them. Not sure if there was a definite fix for it. You just have to take it in and see what they can do for it. I experienced it on a used Treg I test drove before buying my 04. I never experienced it on my 04 ever.

The diff allows the wheels on that axle to turn at a different rate for going around corners for example.

The stepper motor is there to progressively lock the the diff in tricky conditions, with electronics playing their part too, thus slowing and even preventing the diff from allowing the wheels to turn at a different rate.

It is this that makes the car feel as though it just wants to go in straight lines leading to the juddering on slow speed turns on hard surfaces.

Sometimes a software update fixed the problem. Otherwise, it needed a new stepper motor. Since most cars will have had the software tweak by now, the chances are a new stepper motor is required if a car is suffering this problem now.

I removed fuse # 47 for rear axle/diff lock and start doing it all the time, also if I put it in 4X4 low on rear axle lock, it do it too. Is the stepper motor inside the rear differential or outside? If inside can I change it w/o changing the rear differential? Do you have part number? Thanks

Please, never lock the diffs unless you are on wet grass, in mud or on loose gravel - i.e. a surface where the wheels can slip to adjust if required.

Don't even do it for a few yards on a hard surface. You can seriously damage the transmission.

Not so sure if it's the same situation, i can feel the jerk when i turn the steering while the car is not moving or start moving very slow. Drive slightly faster and turn the steering then no problem. Having this situation since the car was new and remains till now. The dealer mechanic told me it's because of the larger wheel diameter

This is a Stepper Motor issue --- either the hardware (the actual motor) or the software that controls the system.

This is a well documented problem with the earlier Touaregs. First, the actual motor was replaced, but when all the problems didn't go away (exactly as the OP stated)... VW found that a software update was needed to fix it.

It seems like once all that was done... problems went away. I would check with your dealer to see if the vehicle ever had the work done.

The plus side is... the Stepper Motor has become a fairly inexpensive part to replace.. .and as for the actual labor... it's an easy part to reach if you can get the vehicle on a lift.

It is very easy to see if you get out and get under as they say - the pic above shows you what you are looking for.

There is a date on the part too so you should be able to see if it has been replaced in the past.

Mine is 2 years younger than my car!
