I wonder.

I know that our projector headlamps take care of both high and low beams but what does that light do next to the headlight?/inboard of the headlight?

There are LED DRL's that horseshoe under the headlight but I just wonder, what is the other light for?

Are they your headlight flash units?

Xenon bulbs don't like being flashed.

You're gonna have to go stand in front of it to figure it out :)

The xenon systems are no longer like yours anymore Nooby. There are no more flashing to pass high beams on the Touaregs like they use to be on the very early models. I don't have them on my '10 either. I do have a halogen bulb but it is just for a turning light only. has nothing to do with high beams at all.

I believe it is what they call in Europe "City Lights". I believe they are essentially what we call "Parking Lights" here.

Its an LED that's there to look cool...I think it does.

In the UK your "parking lights" are generally referred to as "side lights".

I agree, it looks good. The U-Shaped LED array looks cooler though.
The combo of the U, the single inboard LED, the AFS xenon, the LED yellow sidemarkers all combine for a cool lookin headlight!!!

I do wish I had the option to turn the DRLs off though.

Is it not in VCDS for the T3 to do this? Would be a bit odd though having those lights just there with no function anymore. Not that they do a whole lot now anyhow.

I think I need to get one of the VAGCOM or what not ECU software hack things to actually turn them off. I would like to actually program them to come on with the headlights as they do add to the looks of the headlights, I just don't particular like them on during the daytime.

Since Touareg is offered in both halogen (ROW) and bi-xenon, the small LED light was put in bi-xenon assembly purely for looks to occupy no longer used space of a halogen high beam.
Ah ha, I didn't realize that there was a non-xenon version of the headlights out there. Must be in the non-USDM market though.

Base models in NAR come with halogen lights..I think the DRL is becoming a worldwide regulation, which is likely why you can't shut the LED DRLs off. I like the look of them personally and LEDs will outlast the vehicle so I'm personally not concerned about shutting of DRLs.

Most peoples DRL concern on earlier models was burning out expensive xenon bulbs...the xenon light no longer comes on as DRL...just the LED "U"

Yes they can be turned of with VCDS.

True for T1 and T2

All the NAR T3 have xenons as far as I know.
