So on the weekend i decided to check the engine filter, as it has been raining for over two days and i have read forums about the issue of water ingestation etc.

To my surprise, the bottom part of the air filter, was wet, substantially.

The car is a MY16 150tdi with only 25K on the oddo.

So where to from here. Looking at the intake, there appears to be a shield fitted to prevent water coming in form the hood, but its not perfect. The two drains fitted to the intake pipe, both appear to be clean but wet.

Anyone else had this issue?

Do a search, this is not a new problem with 2nd gen Touaregs, some claim their engines have hydrolocked because of it, I believe there is a recall in China over issue.

Here in the UK I think there is a recall where a drain is installed. Have a look on www.mytreg.com

Folks, these air filters and their seals are 1 time shut and open. If you open it up to look at the air filter, just replace it. The foam compresses the first time you button the clips tight. It never reseals again correctly after the first "set". So, if you think things aren't good, open the air box and R&R the air filter. Don't chance reusing the foam seals on the air filter, and getting an air leak and feeding your engine dirty air.

I assume that from what you are saying, only change out the filter at the scheduled interval ,don't be checking it for water. I have never checked mine ,just replaced when called for. I have not had an issue and I drive in big time rain in FL during the monsoon season.

I am puzzled that it seems some production has a shield and others don't. Makes no logical sense.

Hi WogsRus,
I had similar issue causing engine failure. Volkswagen Group Australia deny all knowledge of issue and refuse to fix. I am keen to hear from other Aussie Touareg owners with experience with this problem as I need a body of evidence to present at upcoming hearing of NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal. I have prepared a detailed case including extensive internet research into this design fault which I am happy to share with forum member. My contact is 0419 405 501 on donm@outlook.com.au

Interesting, did you buy it locally (AU)?
I could only find one retailer here, very expensive with all others in UK as seems.

@WogsRus attached is a picture with the diverters and part numbers available from VW locally for a moderate price. Also attached is VW Service Action Code: 23DG Air Intake Drain Valve from the USA NHTSA ( lots of good stuff on there) I have removed the inlet drain and changed the filter drain again quite moderately priced locally no more issues since then. - Part # 7P6805962 C was already fitted to my 2016 My 17 vehicle

One thing my mechanic advised was if you are using an automatic car wash to turn the engine off as the fine mist spray most use to pre rinse can be sucked up by the engine intake.

not sure but certainly cannot hurt
