Wasn't sure where to put this. I no the touareg is heavy already. I would like to ditch some weight out of it and modify it a bit.
Spare wheel has gone, replaced with tyre foam, jack , cd changer, spanners, hazard triangle brackets in the boot. The stuff I've removed was heavy

Rear wiper and motor will be going soon

No I've never used a rear wiper. And I have things in place if I have a puncture. Im into modifying cars. I'm very aware it's not a track car thankyou as I drive it. You won't see the logic because you arnt working on it . If negative comments are what you want to give I don't want them .

Radio.
Rear seats.
Rear seat belts.
Trunk floor.
Suitcase exhaust box.
Passenger side wiper arm and blade.
Fog lights if fitted.
Only keep 2 gallons in the tank
And empty the screenwash bottle.
All mats and carpets.
Door mirrors.
Go on a diet.

That's an interesting modification you want to do @Rick2022 for a V8 that is going to be a daily drive.

Hi yes Ive seen turbo conversions, bits here and there. Not a great deal of aftermarket support that I can see. I like the touareg I feel safe on the road . I like to be different to the usual crowd. I'm not easily offended by people either . I think words could be chosen better that's all.

If you still have cast iron lower control arms you could change those for the alloy version from Porsche, that should save you >10kgs, look at other suspension components as well, rear seats are pretty heavy too, must be 40+kgs there ....
Realistically how much weight are you trying to save?

Now this is a good source of info

Now this is a good source of info ! I didn't no about the arms. Not sure about how much weight to lose. Did all the Touaregs in the first model come with airbags in the seats and had airbag curtains? I believe I have the high spec model . It's a family car so I don't want to go silly with it

Also if you don’t plan on towing the factory tow receiver is very heavy. Pretty easy swap to the basic bumper internals.

I had an 88 VW GLi I gutted to do sound deadening in back in the day. Entire interior including dash and seats / carpet removal. The weight change was phenomenal and I ended up keeping it that way for a while. With no engine mods I could race and beat Mustangs of that era. Felt like a shopping cart lol!

the rear suitcase muffler as mentioned above is another heavy source-I got rid of that to help with towing-keeps rear weight down. I too ditched the spare as I run oversize and bring tire strings with me…and a prayer lol.

Your touareg weighs close to 6,000 lb, It would take removing a huge volume of stuff to make any form of impact in handling or acceleration.

I use mine (05 V6) primarily for walking my dogs. The rear seats are not only themselves heavy but also have some brackets that weigh quite a bit too. If you don't need them ditch them. I could tell a small difference in economy and performance. The seats feel like at least 200lbs combined however I never did weigh them.

So things removed so far and just so we no where we are going with this ,it's a daily car .
And I estimate roughly 25kg has gone already. I will be going on weigh bridges at some point. Will some will laugh at this . If I goes serious enough I will be doing more than just stripping stuff to lose weight .

Jack
Spare wheel
CD changer ewww
VW spanners
Insulation
Parcel shelf , pull over thing and brackets

Since you still seem to be an active user I thought I would update this thread with another weight saving item.

2 piece front brake rotors.
I purchased a set from RacingBrake. Just watiing for my new brake pads to arrive before I install them. Not sure on weights yet but could be up to 3kg per side.
Two-piece rotor (Open Slot) FRONT - CAYENNE 04+ (330x32mm) (racingbrake.com)

Front 2 piece RB disc rotor assembly = 8.772kg
Standard 1 piece discs = 10.080kg and 10.060kg
So a 1.3kg weight loss per front rotor.
A lot less than I was expecting. But the front rotors were very worn. Wouldn't be surprised if there was 200+grams of material removed per rotor compared to new.
Does anyone know approximately what the weight difference is between a new and fully worn brake rotor? Obviously the rotor dimensions matter. But is it 50grams or 500grams difference?

Rear DBA disc rotor (DBA 42245S) = 8.640kg
Didn't get to install the rear rotors as DBA lists the wrong rear brake pad for my vehicle. Didn't want to put old worn pads with new rotors.

Well I had a quick look to calculate rotor mass removed due to wear, and with my rotors worn approx 1.5mm on both faces (3mm total) it appears that each face has had 318grams removed. So 636gram of material removed per rotor compared with when they were new at 32mm width. It seems really extreme to me. But metal is very dense.

This would mean the worn rotors would have weighed 10.726kg and 10.706kg when new. So the actual weight loss with the new RB 2 piece rotors is actually closer to 1.934kg per rotor. Not the previously mentioned 1.3kg.
This also puts it much closer in line with other measured weight differences between single and 2 piece rotors such as from Subaru and Evo brakes..

However there is also a very interesting video by someone who seems to know how to calculate and weigh things better than me.
He claims that the actual weight saved by going to 2 piece alloy construction hat is only closer to 750grams. He claims the rest is mainly due to different disc rotor designs (the actual rotor and mainly vane design).
I would believe him as I have noted significant differences in weight between difference brand single piece rotors in the past (on other vehicles).

Just to update that my calculations for weight of material removed do in fact appear correct.
I found a bunch of rotor weights for discs to fit my vehicle.
10.88kg is the lightest I could find listed and 11.6kg are the heaviest I could find listed.
It looks like the usual range is low 11kg.

Judging by the look and wear of my old rotors I would assume they are one of the lighter ones. No doubt this correlates directly to price (cheap) as less material is needed. Haha.
