I have Touareg 1 2007 facelift.
Webasto should be there because there Is exhaust of it under drivers place. I have overhead display, but IT only shows time and any of that buttons doin nothing. Fuel tank Is 50%.

This is normal function for a lot of them. Only certain models, not sure which, had the timer with programming times to preheat. Also some came with a remote. But most of the time they just kick on when it's under 4 degrees F I think? I did a bunch of research at one point but then realized I live in SoCal and will never use my webasto. LMK if you need parts xD

So the buttons Are there just for nothing? :D
And to check if it works or not am supposed to wait for Winter?
You can adjust the time and brightness of the display too :)
I have not seen any Webasto diagnosis tutorial however if you spend enough time with VCDS I'm sure there is something in there to make it cut in to test it.

Seems about right that a special drive in freezer would be part of the special tools dealers had for working on the V10, along with the special car lifts they got just for engine out service.
Every job I have heard is "engine out" I have seen someone on the internet do in-situ. Fine with me though, keep used Touaregs cheap!

VW in general seems to give very little engineering thought to realistic maintenance and repair procedures. In practice, I haven't found the factory manuals on VWs useful for really any repairs, because they make it 10x as hard as it needs to be- telling you to remove tons of parts that aren't really in the way and are likely to break or need new gaskets and seals made of unobtanium to reinstall, special tools, etc. They will also tell you to replace bolts that are not TTY just to get pre-installed threadlock, and to torque things with a torque wrench that cannot be physically accessed with a torque wrench. Even the dealers don't actually follow those procedures. To the letter of the rules, even doing a simple suspension alignment probably requires replacing every fastener in the suspension system because you're not supposed to losen and retighten anything without replacing it on a VW.
