It was 2010. Lost started my clinical depression. iPad's were so new people didn't know they were useless. Lady Gaga wore meat. The movie Repo Men just came out. As a sophomore in high school Jude Law and Forest Whitaker changed my life. Driving a T2 TDI with it's insane wheel arches, matte black attitude, what the hell were those scoops even for, and sick puddle lights (it was the first time I saw them okay), I knew I would some day own this vehicle.

Fast forward a decade (we will skip the outlaw years, the marriage years, and addiction years for today's story), I found one. On OfferUp. For $6000. "Mechanic's Special" due to a leaky tandem pump. Hey, I'm a mechanic! I went to check it out and it had a weird clicking sound from the differential that the seller failed to mention in the advert. After many midnight hours of research I determined (in my professional opinion) the cause to be mismatched tire sizes. I actually managed to beat the seller down to $3600 on account of the clicking noise, bought a wicked set of Mercedes G-Wagen Ashtaroth rims on c-list, and was immensely pleased to discover the clicking noise magically vanished. Now I'm the proudest new owner of a 2006 Twareg V10 TDI 💪 My first diesel AND my first forced induction vehicle AND my first bona fide off-roader. Now where do I get smogged with straight pipes in California?

Mileage? Congrats on the V10. I wanted one of the two or 3 for sale on here but couldn’t justify it since I am not that savvy and that’s a real marvel, not your everyday car to work on.

any particular off road or towing plans for it?

200,000 miles. Towing and off-roading are the two things I bought this bad baby for slaps roof
I ride motorcycles in Angeles Forest so now I can make the hour and a half ride to and from the mountains in air conditioned luxury with my bike on a hitch carrier instead of mobbing through 405 traffic on a two-wheeled death wish. Hell i might even cop a car carrier and hotshot :sneaky:
Azusa also has a dedicated "off-highway vehicle" area featuring some nice river crossings, mud pits, and rock crawling to really give the old girl some abuse. After the past ten days of rain it's looking pretty slick out there
I got a buddy with a Land Rover I can't wait to drive Mojave Road with, as well as other overlanding routes around here. Any recommendations for off-road routes in SoCal will be appreciated. I tried going up Silverado last night LOL they had it all shut down for flash floods though

Good thinking on the tires!

As a mechanic you probably don't need this link on the common issues, but it might be helpful as a heads up:

And you can put together The Jimi Fix (spelt exactly as typed) bits in a small plastic bag to be ready should your drive shaft rubber let go!

is that article specific to T1/T2? It seems more 7L oriented than 7P.

I am picking up a minty 2016 7P TDI w/ 30K miles in a few weeks, want to get ahead of this stuff.

Might want to get that CEL fixed so you can pass inspection before you start going crazy.

Congrats on the buy.

I read that whole common problems thread before I bought the car ;)
And the CEL was for some dead battery codes I cleared them up and drove 600 miles so far no pending codes. I even found a guy to smog me with no muffler :)

Took her to Holy Jim trail/Trabuco Canyon yesterday, wherever you point the steering wheel the twin turbo v10 just grabs the earth and moves 5800lbs in that direction, pretty amazing really!

BTDT, works very well except that worn bearing whine drove my wife crazy and I bought new drive shaft on ebay for just over a hundred shipped and had it installed for another three - didn't feel like dropping exhaust without a lift.

I've done about 2500 miles so far. DoorDash isn't quite as fruitful as with a Prius but a Prius can't tow a jumbo jet...
A slight wheel shake started getting worse and my lazy ass finally brought her in for a wheel balance only to find a busted front-driver upper control arm ball joint. RockAuto is sending a whole arm for about 70 bucks arriving tomorrow. Tandem pump gasket comes Friday so both jobs will be done by the weekend hopefully in time for Cars n Coffee...
The oil dripping from the tandem pump is causing quite a bit of smoke once she heats up so it's probably better to be parked for a few days anyway.

Doordash? I always hear that’s the least lucrative one, at least in Philly.

Why would he be doing it if, it wasn't lucrative to him?
You're insufferable. I don't understand what your beef with me is.

It was a question. Where I am, it is the least lucrative delivery platform. I'm just discussing with him. I do not appreciate your useless quips.

As I've said in a previous post, I find that you come off as arrogant. You made a passive aggressive comment towards his work. If you wanted to properly ask him about it, you would say something like "Just wondering, what made you chose to deliver for doordash over uber eats? I hear that the pay can vary greatly". I asked you an honest question as well, why would he be doing it, if it wasn't lucrative to him?

No one has had an issue with me on this forum, I've been on here since 2017 and have over 1,500 posts.

back to the topic, is there a particular reason DD is better for you than UE/GH/etc?

I did a DoorDash promotion that paid out $350 + earnings for 10 deliveries which took me ~3 hours. $425 in 3 hours. Wasn’t bad. But it would’ve been $75 in 3 hours which isn’t horrible but for the wear and tear and fuel consumption comes out closer to like 15-20/hr.

Uber won't hire me on account of my background. Doordash couldn't care.

I just changed the control arm in a hotel parking lot and oh my god I am starting to see the big fuss about these dirty whores....

Tip for anyone attempting this by yourself: call up one of those friends that likes to do everything themselves, you know the guy who always has a better way of doing something, let him figure it out... ok ok i'll give you a real tip: the third rear-most top strut bolt is accessible only after removing the windshield wiper arms and cowling, then you can stick your head behind the hood looking down to the right/passenger side of the brake fluid reservoir and about 18 inches of extendo will get a 16mm on her...
