Got a letter today from VW that they are extending the warranty of the HPFP to 10 years/120,000 miles.

I'll scan and post the letter some time soon.

That sounds too good to be true. It be nice to take this grenade worry off the list.
I'm not so sure. I think it's VW drawing the line at 120k miles and the letter doesn't say that they will cover the entire cost associated with an HPFP failure. Just the HPFP. The a days of VW's goodwill repair of HPFP regardless of mileage are over.

Well that will certainly test the warranty. But the HPFP is rated for Diesel lubricity as in Europe - a certain wear factor on the pump. Diesel sold here in oz is only just within this spec. Not sure of the US. There are very detailed threads on all this out there and how to lower the wear (increase fuel lubricity). So the pump has a certain design lifetime that can be considerably shorted if the lubricity of the fuel drops.

I just traded my Jeep in on a 2013 TDI Touareg about 3 weeks ago. This weekend I stopped by my local VW to seek guidance on using/not using fuel additives to prevent an HPFP failure. During our chat the gentleman did try and ease my worries by showing me this new warranty extension and I did feel better about it, UNTILL I saw it only covered up to 2012s, and mine is a 2013. His statement was something like "this is just their first step, they'll likely add on 2013s, 14s,15s later as they fail more". I hope he is correct :(

Keep in mind that there were 2-3 revisions to the HPFP along the way. It's documented in NHTSA's final HPFP report. Around 2011-2012 I think. Little seems to be known about the details of the changes but maybe Bosch improved the pump's ability to hold up under the quality of US fuel.

I haven't seen anything post-Spicer Report about what changes were made to the HPFP but it seems likely to me that Bosch improved the design and this whole thing may be a non-issue on later model years, except in the case of misfueling or bad contamination.

Anyway the Spicer Report etc. is ancient history now.

Its probably Bosch that's being pressured by VW and others to make good on the part...automakers are taking a hit on this due to Bosch design.

NHTSA deal helps on the pressure.

In any case good to see. protects resale value as well.

How can VW admit that there is a problem with the HPFP and extend the warranty to cover it but not cover the cost associated with the failure of the part that they admit is problematic?

Easy: A pack of lawyers crafted the letter. VW knows full well the potential consequences of the HPFP sending shrapnel through the fuel system. They're deliberately ignoring that.

This extended warranty is a good thing, not to be tossed in the garbage. But VW is playing their cards very very carefully to minimize their liability. A savvy owner will need to be well-informed and very insistent.

The good news is the odds of this scenario occurring are extremely slim.

Drive. Don't worry.

My letter states nothing about not covering ancillary damage. Mine states that if the correct uncontaminated fuel is found in the tank then they will replace the pump at no cost. It doesn't say anything about not covering the other parts that are damaged by the pump grenading.

But that's the thing: If your HPFP fails and takes out the rest of the fuel system with it, doing $10K in damage, VW might give you a new pump valued at $2K but charge you $8K to fix the rest of the collateral damage.

The Platinum Warranty should cover you for everything beyond the HPFP itself.

Well that's my really pessimistic interpretation of VW's weasel letter about the HPFP.

Or maybe they'll fix the whole thing for free. I love how VW does a good thing and people are so quick to bash them. Damned if you do and damned if you don't right?

I hear you on the extended warranty. I am thinking of canceling mine for the time being since I still have power train till 100k and the hpfp warranty till 120k. Those are my 2 main concerns with this thing.

I'm with you Jim.... Maybe they changed something? I'm not all that concerned personally, as I bought the car with 29K on it (from CO), but MN is a BioDiesel state and it's 10% here in the summer (they've been pushing for 20 - ugh).
