Do you find yourselves wishing you had spent the extra few thousand for the V8? I've test drove 3 touaregs in the last 2 weeks and I'm not sure the V6 has enough power to make it fun to drive. I'm still not sure it's worth the extra ~$5000 for the V8 though.

I agree with Mike's post. I have the V6 and while the V8 is certainly a sweet engine.... I don't feel like I'm missing anything.
I live in a high altitude area (which is a hp eater) and I've been very happy. Sport mode on the transmission is a blast... and I've been able to tackle the Colorado Mountains without any trouble.

Bigger is always better, sure - then get the V10.
But the V6 is punchy when it needs to be and through corners you couldn't push much harder - unless you've got the air suspension - because that body roll is precarious.
The V8 is considerably more expensive in Australia, though: ~$A33k difference (that's about US$25k) between base models. The decision may have been more difficult if the differential were smaller here.

I have to agree with the masses. The v8 would be nice, but for me the v6 is practical and a solid performer. I have towed a 6x12 uhaul trailer full of furniture through the Virginia hills, and have not one complaint regarding it's power. It was able to maintain 75mph uphill to keep up with traffic.

I just spent 4 days in and around the Blue Ridge Parkway. That's about as much elevation that those of us that live on the east coast will see. Anyway, there were times that I thought that the engine was laboring a little bit, but not that much. The first day I didn't think about using the sport mode, but on the second I did and it made a vast improvement. It was shifting at a higher RPM that made the car much more responsive.
I also was getting about 20 MPG on the highway on the way back - I was happy with that. I am not sure what the V8 gets

I opted for the V6 for economic reasons but also because the V6 had enough power to sail along at any speed I wanted to without pushing it. The only thing I would buy the V8 for is the mellow to growl exhaust sound.
Unless you plan on towing, the V6 is fine--especially with sport mode. I had two V6 Passats because I thought the 4s were too loud and lacked oomph. So I wanted to make sure I had a capable engine on this purchase... especially since it's more expensive than the Passats I've had and I bought this one--ending the lease syndrome.
With my Touareg, I've been over the Rockies (Canadian, too) twice, through the Blue Ridge Parkway, etc and it's done just fine. While it can growl getting on a highway [the way I do], I would say the extra 5k is either better spent on the Nav and Prem Pkg, or... 2500 gallons of gas. That's 41000 miles of driving free if you're willing to go with the 6.

R5 TDi (still haven´t got the car but already driven it), is a good car.. I expect o install the VW chip for the R5 (which is supposed to come at the end of the year), and it will be a blast to drive.. high torque + good hp...

It has pep, and I don't feel like it's under-powered. I have taken my Touareg on long distance journeys and am happy with its performance. I had a V6 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it cannot even compare with the Touareg. I would have liked to get the V10 but it is a good CDN$30K more than the V6. I will definitely upgrade to the V10 in a couple of years...

It's not the speed, it is the acceleration that is why you move from a V6 to a V8, or V8 to a V10.

No complaints - plenty of pep in drive and even more in S. The only time I notice a slight lack of power is passing on the highway - but I've gotten in the habbit of popping the car into S before passing... I had the choice of a base 8 or a loaded 6 I went with the loaded 6 and have no regrets...
