V10 funny rumble at the light.

I just got my "new to me" 06 V10 and when it sits in gear at the light, I hear slight, but noticeable rumble from the drivetrain, however as soon as I let off the brake it goes away, same if I put it in neutral.
Any thoughts?

I own a 2007 V10 and formally owned a 2004 V10...I'm not sure what rumble you are speaking of as I don't/haven't noticed such. Can you be more specific when you hear this....windows open, air suspension on normal or high...the only noise I get is if the air suspension is adjusting back up and my foot is on the brake pedal - the suspension geometry changes and you will get a creak or two in the brakes as tension in the suspension is released at the new ride hight. Remember the V10 (all air suspension Touaregs) are continuously adjusting ride hight based on speed so when you come to a stop the vehicle is usually rising up a bit to the normal rest ride hight...

My V10 is at the local dealership right now, they said that they have no clue where this stop light rumble is coming from, because it is audible everywhere under the hood. So far I have to go back tomorrow to pickup my loaner car... I hope this is not another case of garage dwelling V10 I bought

I have the same stop light rumble Mish Mish, it goes away as soon as you take your foot off the brake. I got it checked from two different dealerships and both confirmed all was normal....let me know if you hear otherwise.

My new-to-me 2004 V10TDI does the same thing. It's a little disconcerting -- sounds like torque converter chatter or something. I hear it a bit and feel it in the floorboard a little bit. It goes away as soon as I'm off the brake or in neutral. I'm choosing not to worry about it, but please report back with your diagnosis.

Cheers, John

not sure if it is the same thing, but if it is a slightly more pronounced dieseling, it is normal and is caused by the torque of the engine, at idle, wanting to move forward but brake restrained and slightly lower when in gear. Almost like the RPMs are too low when in gear (but normal). If it is this, you should find it even more pronounced if you "slightly" depress the throttle while continuing to keep the brakes applied but prior to the RPMs raising too much. Once you raise the RPMs into the high end of idle or above the idle range, the dieseling goes away.

Do you how many RPMs you are turning when this happens?

In my case and most others I have read about, it occurs at idle RPMs -- say 500-600. It's most noticeable at a stop-light, where you're in gear with your foot on the brake and stopped. If you let the car roll, or slip the transmission into neutral, the chatter/rumble/vibration stops.

So, if I hear you correctly, this noise is detonation, that would go away if RPM is raised, or decreased. Therefore, I would suggest dropping idle RPM say by 50 RPM, which should get engine out of the noisy range. I also noticed that if I turn off climate control (A/C), while sitting at the light, this noise goes down as well.

interesting. sounds load related. raising the RPMs, again if it is the same thing that you are hearing. I believe that it is widely accepted that the V10 design requires a higher cetane level then what is normally available in the states, as do the other VW diesel engines. Adding powerservice or some other additive with a cetane increaser may resolve this issue.

Well, just spoke to the dealership and they said that she is still stuck there. They found heat damaged harness that goes into the valve body (again, this is from the words of their service adviser, do not quote me on this), so they are replacing that harness to see if this fixed this cold jerking issue and possibly the rumble in her tummy at the dead stop. If not, they are looking at a new transmission, since that rumble is coming from the bell housing area. One way, or the other, I will not argue with new transmission, while driving dreamy Toyota Yaris for another week. I was gonna enjoy driving my V10 this weekend, since it is the essence of my $32K investment, however it will only get sweeter, the more I drive 1.5L Yaris, AKA - the mighty pinnacle of Japanese engineering.

I've had the a rumble in my '06 V10 since new. I noticed if you release the brake pressure slightly the sound diminishes. THinking it is the vacuum brake booster. Knowing Diesels don't have the vacuum to support the power brakes, they normal have some kind of vacuum pump to provide the vacuum for the brake booster. Stopped at the light, you are at idle, and have the brake down hard, the pump needs to pump hard to support the vacuum required for the power brakes. It's my theory, but seems to match experience.

I don't know if it would help or not but my early 2004 came factory set with the transmission in "hill hold" mode which means at stop it basically shifts into 2nd gear which somehow locks the tranny and it will not roll backwards. In later years 2005+ VW decided this feature would be deactivated in US models so if you want it you need a Vag-Com and go to Transmission and recode to Other World from US. Perhaps if the tranny is shifting into 2nd the load is removed and thus the reason I have not had this rumble in either 2004 or 2007 V10...worth a shot for those that have Vag-com and the rumble.

Exactly, they never heard this sound and were completely thrown off by the situation. They mentioned that it comes from everywhere and that they could not pinpoint exact source.
Do you also have this sound?
I noticed today that when I just start the car, especially when it is cold, there is not rumble, it only appears after some warm up, even a little.
I know that this is a bit scary rumble, plus some vibration, however since we have almost every V10 member here with it, since the day one, I am calming myself down.

Also, I see not brake booster under the hood, so maybe brake is hydraulic, causing this noise at a stop?
I also can not find starter and alternator on V10, where are they??? Are they inside the bellhousing, on flywheel, like with hybrid cars?

It's not the brake booster, because at least on mine, you can be at a stop and on the brakes with the shifter in neutral or park and not have the vibration.

I believe I've heard that the alternator -- and possibly all accessories? -- are on the back side of the V10 rather than hanging off the front like most other engines. I haven't bothered opening up all the plastic covering to look.

I had a chatter on my 2.5TDI at idle, my local dealer noticed it and investigated the problem, it was a bearing in the alternater which they replaced (The whole alternater that is) under warantee Around ÂŁ1100 pounds ($2200 dollars!) its now very quiet at idle.
