V10 Fuel Leak

Have an '04 V10 with 110k miles. I recently changed the fuel filters (2 wks ago). This weekend, I noticed there was a small amount of diesel dripping below the Touareg. I have double checked all of the connections/fitting at the fuel filter. Everything up top is dry. I have removed the belly pans and inspected from underneath with the engine running. I could not identify a source or see any fuel dripping. It does appear to be coming from the drivers side. Is it possible that the source is the aux water heater? Does it have it's own exhaust or dump into the engine exhaust? Could I have introduced some air in the fuel circuit that prevented the aux heater from firing correctly and cause it to dump fuel? Can I test fire the aux heater via VAG-COM? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Yes it has its own exhaust and yes you can test fire it using VCDS.

I'm guessing you put in a new gasket when you changed your filters?

Yes, I did change the gaskets when I replaced the fuel filters. I have wiped all of the seams that are broken when changing the fuel filter with a clean dry cloth. It comes back clean every time. I'll double check the seals and re-torque the screws. Any other thoughts?

My V10 had a bleed screw up top that you could remove to attach a bleed hose to...is that the area you found the leak?

That's the spot. It loosened up after a few days of driving. The leak was so small at first it was hard to detect. I retightened the screw and the leak is gone. I think I might use some blue loctite on that screw next time I service the filter.

nice find and Good idea on the loctite, I used blue loctite as its an (i think) aluminum screw into aluminum...figured the heat/cold cycles might loosen it.

Please advise if you will exactly, as best you can where this bleed valve screw is. I changed the filter but I do not recall using a bleed screw and do not recall seeing one. I too have a fuel leak in this area, but I believe it was occurring prior to my having changed the filter. I too have all the belly pans off to no avail,

Please advise if you are still out there some where.

We are talking two different set-ups here: twin filters in the V on the 2004 vs single driver's side (usa) on the 2006. That said, the 2006 does have a bleed screw which is where the VAS 5226 vac gun attaches, right between the hose connections. BYW, I have faithfully bled mine and never ever gotten ANY water out.

i would inspect the lid of the filter canister for accumulated fuel as well as the seam where the lid flange seats into the canister. It should all be completely dry.
That said, I did my usual 20k mile filter change last week and ended up with a leak between the lid and the can. On disassembly I found a tear in the gasket for which I suspect I am responsible. It is very difficult to seat the new element all the way down in the can. I made the mistake of using the lid to force it down the last little bit. I do recall tightening the screws unevenly and that the front part came down at an angle. Did not realize the seal was torn as the leak developed during a 700 mile, high speed trip.
