V10 Crank no start, Frustrating :(

Thought i start my own thread on this, was getting confusing for some members :D

I had taken the V10 apart on the top to do a compression test (have a parallel thread for that issue). Put everything back except right side egr and intake flap which was the only electrical part unplugged.
Primed it with fuel through vag com, crank and a sputtery start but it started, noticed eeprom error on my ecu with vag com, erased all codes that one doesn't go away. I then take battery terminal off complete my reassembly on intake flap and egr put the boost pipe, go back try to start and nothing it just spins endlessly not even a sign of life.
Re-prime fuel pumps, add more power to battery to hold crank speed, rescan ecu now eeprom error gone and no other codes.

What have i done wrong? Is there any critical component by the engine firewall where the egr and flap are that i might've undone?

Also i find strange that when it cranks check engine and glow plug light dissapear as well as the MFD in the dash, only lights remaining are red battery abs and traction ctrl (when cranking)
I also see tacho needle move up slightly after a few seconds.

Help before i dump er in the ditch lol:confused:

The trunk battery is the starting battery on a V10.

The one under the seat looks after the ancillaries but, if the trunk battery is down, it does an emergency start routine.

Any doubt, then deal with the rear battery properly!!

#62 ·
The starting battery is the front battery . The rear is called the starting battery as it is used if the front is flat to start. You don't have power running long distances for heavy amp loading. I checked this , and if you doubt pull the front battery and push the start button !

#6 ·
i have a little red line through the indicator window, what did that mean again?
Can't remember - never looked at it that closely!

Could be your bank overdraft level of course!!

Ok so double checked both batteries and they have sufficient voltage, yellow reset switch is in all the way, all important modules
-engine
-airbag
-trans
-acc start auth
-instruments
-cent electric
Show no codes once cleared

Any other suggestions?

ok so getting 9.2 Volts at battery terminals when starter is in action, clearly Central electric is pointing to shutting components down to manage load, ECU is probably not getting enough voltage, new battery ordered, will try again on Monday next week.

As per VW diagram, Start up consumers can either be run by on-board or trunk battery depending on which has more charge, it is the Central electric ECU that will decide which relay to open thus which battery to select

#10 ·
I still have no confirmed resolution, I'm hoping this is the gremlin :D
You checked the batteries and they were OK.
Then you only have 9.2 volts during an attempted start? If the engine is turning over fast enough or as fast as it used to when it started batteries most likely will not be your issue. That's a 3kw starter you are going to get voltage drop when activated does the voltage return to 12 soon as starter stops?. You did not do any messing around at your RHS fuel (tandem pump did you ) it would probably throw a code but is it possible that just below the tandem pump is the cam angle sensor and you dislodged that. It will be a eureka moment when you find the issue (and you will have faith) but simple check list
- is the engine clearly spinning fast enough to start?
- have you got fuel rail pressure and are sure fuel is getting to your injectors
- seeing you played with your glow plugs and I presume its cold over there are they all working correctly?
- I keep saying it as a check to others but is fuel being injected? If not and all the pumps and line are clear the ECU will be stopping the injector firing. CHECK the injector pulse with a noid light to see if is getting signal to fire?.
- fuel, air, enough compression on 9 cyl's, glow plug heat it will fire if not one of these items is missing.

I know you probably know all this.

drag,
Batteries are sort of ok, so i knew i had to replace at least one, and i have ordered it
Engine is spinning fast enough to start for sure
I did not mess with RHS tandem but i did work close to it like i said, the EGR flap is just nearby. Now say i knocked the cam sensor off, which is actually under the pump, wouldn't that throw a open circuit code in the ECM?
Now regarding fuel rail pressure, i would like to know which measuring block will show me high pressure readings when i use vag com?
I have tried priming the pumps on Basic settings channel 035 and i'm sure fuel is under pressure up to the tandems.
Truck is in a garage and not exposed to exterior temperatures so it should start without glow plugs
Also noticed something weird, while cranking and vag com runing on measuring blocks, i can see injector injection quantity for each cylinder, it does remain at 0.0 mg/s
would that be indicative that the ECM is not pulsing the injectors or its just my Vag-Com not fast enough to update the real-time data?

Still waiting to get my battery tomorrow, i did fool around with it a little more,
checked all fuses in plenum chamber, left side and right side dash panel, as well as both fuses for onboard power supply management under the seat, everything checks out

i do get these errors in the central elec module, but when cleared they don't come back
-Starting battery voltage implausible signal
-Supply voltage terminal 30 - implausible signal
-Intervention load management
-Fuse for control module for power supply to vehicle battery - Defective

Any ideas?

I have a local buddy with a 2006 that had a charred alternator harness, so that's worth checking into. One cable runs from positive lug on driver side, around back of engine, into valley, and the other i believe to be part of the engine wiring harness, though the failure was in a subharness that detaches. It's cozy in there, so you may have to pull the oil filter stand and fuel filter housing, but you may be able to get to it without doing that.

#15 ·
I'd check the battery relay on the main battery under driver's seat. Make sure you can see the copper in the sight glass.
Also, Bentley gives dire warnings about observing proper connection order for batteries. I believe this warning applies to early models like your 2004. Try using the proper order. Basically, do not change rear without disconnectimg front first. Connect rear first. I'll bet your rear is bad.

#16 ·
I do see copper in the window of the battery switch (was confusing it for something red)
If that goes i will get no voltage to the starter which is clearly not the case
I just got the replacement front battery, let's see what happens tonight

#17 ·
OK so here's the latest tonight
1. Swapped new battery in, front under seat battery was smaller, i think just like the one in the back.
2. Reconnected rear first, fully charged and then front
3. Turn key to see lights in dash i have the air suspension and blinking glow plug light
4. Checked vag com and i have eeprom error again, it wont go away
5. Tried cranking = cranks like crazy no ignition, flashing glow plug light still blinking
6. Went back to ECU with vag-com EEPROM error now clears
7. Undid right side intake and verified cam sensor and injector plug behind head, left each one disconnected to see if it will come up in the ECM and it does, also tried starting with right bank completely unplugged, no go
8. Verified battery disconnect switch near under seat battery (with yellow button), it operates the starter directly, if it blows, starter and generator lead is disconnected from the rest of the car, this is a safety feature.
9. Now the fun part, took my own V10's ECM and swapped directly into its little brother, same part number, immediately on turning the key getting "start blocked by immobilizer" try to start anyway, no fire (usually it will crank fire and then shut off on jettas and other vw's not sure about the treg)

A buddy of mine who plays alot with ECM coding has seen the EEPROM error and says it happened to him exactly in this manner, he had started the car, turned it off and it couldn't restart no matter what he did, investigating on this further with him soon.

A general question, the v10 has 2 ECMs where the heck is the one that controls the injector pluse? I swapped the one in the right plenum chamber just above where the interior blower fan would be, any ideas?

There have been some developments however, i found the 2nd ecu, its not too far from the first one, had its plugs removed tried to crank
and now its sputtering like its trying to fire.
Go back to plenum re-plug everything, clear codes from ECM on vag com, retry to start, keeps cranking for a good 30sec and slowly
we get 3-then 5 then 7 then 10 cylinders firing, once its started car remains at idle no issues i even drove it has power.
turned the key off, retry to restart immediately = ok
Tried to restart in 5 minutes = NOTHING, JUST EMPTY CRANKING AGAIN

Repeated procedure, this time priming fuel pumps and listening do both actually work and i can hear them one from each side of the wheel well left and right
bot are they actually pumping fuel. Tank is between 1/3 and 1/2 on the needle. I don't think its missing fuel since it didn't starve once started

This is where i'm at tonight
Here's the scan, there's modules which i haven't reset due to plugging and unplugging stuff and cranking on a dead battery before i replaced it

Any insight appreciated

Great to see some advancement with the issue.
So when it was going this time and you drove it did it go properly with no surging, full power etc ?
You still have not confirmed that when you try to start and it fails to start that the injectors are pulsing.
After what you have found so far it can only be a fuel issue.
Either no fuel being injected or starving for fuel.
Clear all those faults from when you thought you had a battery issue and replaced batteries and post again after start attempt. Are you still getting the Eprom fault?

Thanks guys,

I'm so deternined to fix this myself that the 'trusted source' can only be me. I won't spend a dime giving this to some dealer or garage to be told what i already know :)

Now when i got it started, ran fine for 30 min at least drove it, full power reaches 60mph no problems not a sign of anything wrong.

Drag say this is a fuel issue, i still can't get it around my head how can it be?
Analysing the fuel system theres 4 check valves 2 on each side 1 to keep 8.5 bar on the fuel rail and 1 at the tandem to keep 1bar and return rest. Its almost impossible to start all 10 cylinders if theres no fuel much less keep it going for 30 min.
What will be the result say one electrical pump in the tank has failed? Like i said i do hear them both but will try to re-open covers and find out.

I still think my issue is with injectors not being fired for some time, you mentionned to measure injector pulse what tool did you use to measure and wheres the most appropriate place?

Something like this.
You will need to remove your valve covers and test at the injector maybe not all but to see if the injector is being fired that will clear up if its an ECU control problem. Test both banks.
Be careful if you do this as the wires will be not as flexible as new.

I would not rule out pump or some other fuel pressure issue. I have seen the mechanical fuel pumps failed vanes in the unit so the rail only gets 14psi instead of 115psi but by the same token it would run with this issue.

When you swapped the other ECU did you try swapping both units now you know where both are?
not sure if this will still block start without codes?

Drag,

The ECU swap will not be a valid test since i don't know if truck will start for a second if its blocked by immobilizer, plus i don't want to risk having 2 non-running V10's in my garage

Regarding fueling, i can vouch for the right Tandem pump, it looks brand new, previous owner must've replaced it due to leaking around 100,000mi mark. Heck the aluminium on it is still bright and shiny.

As far as these Noid lights, this is quite interesting as a tool, does this one you've shown me in the link (specifically the bosch one), will it plug to the injector harness?

#26 ·
I also contacted my favorite VW dealer and spoke to a service advisor
asked him straight up, how much for ECU reprogramming via their VAS tool
he quoted me about 2hrs
however started explaning me that my issue doesn't sound like the ECM programming since i can get the truck to run, he says probably a corroded wire or bad ground, something around those lines. I have 3 problems with what he said:

1. Corroded wire anywhere on this truck will generate an open/short circuit code, i have clean ECU diagnostics
2. Bad ground? would it even start without proper power to anything?
3. Bad ground or corrosion don't happen after a shut down/restart

TUNINGBYAMG

Not sure if this will help, but I experienced essentially the same problem you were having, but not on my old Touareg but on petrol Jetta. What would happen is I could start the car when it was cold and not run for a while. If I tried to restart after it being run or warm, it would just crank! Typically this is caused by 1 of 2 things commonly, the thermoswitch thinking the car is cold when its actually hot and hence flooding the engine, or the hall effect crankshaft position sensor. As you are talking about the diesel, I am pretty sure the first can be most likely ruled out immediately. But strangely enough maybe the crank position sensor????

Like I said, just sharing some experience, it most likely is not of any help as the V10 is far more complicated, believe me I know, had one and miss it :(

Well guys, i now have a full scan using VCDS 12.12.3 with a HEX CAN Ross-Tech interface
it did find something that puzzled me, address 11 being the 2nd ECM computer, and wouldn't you know it EEPROM error right there and Engine-Engine Data bus problem
also important to note is RPM signal

Still my starting technique never fails, i unplug ECM 2 crank until engine starts to sputter, then replug it and crank away and she starts on all 10.

Clearing the EEPROM error works, it doesn't stay there but problem with starting persists

***NOTE the Cylinder misfire is a valid code and this is the original issue i was troubleshooting, i have 150psi on cyl 1 which is half what spec is

Also cranking speed reported to ECM 1 is 180-190rpm when i scan during cranking, should've checked rpm speed reported to ECM 2 but forgot

UPDATE

I have found that 2nd ECM misreports signal for Engine speed sender by +-50rpm, it actually fluctuates when doing measuring blocks and truck running, whereas the 1st ECM accurately reports engine rpm. By the EDC16 design Master ECM feeds engine speed signal to Slave ECM.
This is got to be something with the engine-engine databus.

Had some more time to fool around today and took off wipers and rain tray, found lots of leaves everywhere took off both ecms inspected wire looms, cleaned grounds to chassis. All looking good. Plugged everything back tried to start, it takes a good 20 sec of cranking and we have a slow painful start 1-3-5-7-10 cylinders firing, almost like they were lacking fuel. Stop and try to restart it starts, leave it sit for 5 min and back to square one.
Any ideas that support a fuel issue and what to check next? During my compression test i did remove right bank fuel rail and fuel filter body.
I've double checked for fuel leaks and theres none. Priming the pumps in the reservoir through vag com does not change the starting speed of the engine...
