Are there any cigarette lighters in this car that are not switched off with the ignition? How the heck are ya supposed to charge something with the car off?

-Don't know about '08, but on my '05 the 'hideaway' outlet in front of the shifter is powered at all times. I only know this because the one next to the shifter wasn't working, so I plugged my GPS into the front outlet and noticed it was charging with the key out of the ignition.

The '04-'05 models had power to all the outlets at all times (Excepting the 120V outlet, I think). They changed this for the '06 and later models, NONE of the outlets are powered when the ign is off. Apparently too many idiots were leaving stuff plugged in and draining their batteries.

(Note that you can reverse this with a little creative wiring in the fuse boxes, but you didn't hear that from me)

My '04 has power to all (5) sockets all the time, but I'm in SA and our cars are similar to Euro (UK) spec.

Do the US cars have a 120V inverter???? I've never seen this on a Touareg, only the Tiguan, although that is a 220V unit as we run on 220V - 50Hz.

Where is it fitted in the car??

I'm pretty sure that all the US '06 and later models all have the built-in inverter. Not sure about the earlier models. It's in the cargo area, passenger side, just behind the rear seatback; there's a little panel with 2 'cigarette lighter' type plugs along with the 120v plug.
