Tyres for towing

I am looking at buying a 2008 TDI 6cyl Deisal Touareg and I am unsure about the best tyres size for towing a 20ft Caravan. Some cars have the std 17in, others have the 19in Alloys & others have 20in ( low profile - they probably are great for towing). Are there any problems changing 19in back to 17in? I assume that the 17in are the best???
Anyone had any experience with this
Thanks Halbo:)

i dont tow but would think 17s are appropriate for the job. if you have two sets then you can change them as you like.....alls the best

I'd agree with Singh. 17's fitted as stock will have correct load rated tyres with the combined weight of the van. You'll find that 18" - 19" will give the vehicle better handling, but 19" tyres are costly and limited options. I tow an 18' boat and 18's are great as an all-rounder.

On the subject of tyres, anyone in SE Qld/Nth NSW wanting a really cheap set of excellent condition VeeDub Atheo 19's with legal tread Pirelli Pzero Rosso 275/45/19's please PM me. Not planning to fit these wheels again as I have gone to18's with AT/s. They'll fit all Treg variants as best as I know.

I might be wrong here, but I can't see how the size of the wheel makes a difference to the vehicle's towing ability. As long as you stick to the OE sizes and load ratings. Wether it's 17, 18, 19 or 20", it shouldn't make a difference.

I don't think an R50 with 20's will tow any worse/better than a V6 TDI with 17's, apart from the 300Nm extra torque, of course, which has nothing to do with the tyres... :confused2:

I f you put it another way, the 3500kg towing capacity is based on the wheel/tyre placard specs being 17" - 20". So, I guess it doesn't matter what variant tows what, running on whatever. It's the same.

It doesn't matter what size they are (I tow on 20"ers) what matters is that the tires you buy meet the load rating for the Touareg (minimum is 106)..

I just dropped my wife off at Brissy airport this morning. A mixed run on the Warrego Hwy, Ipswich Motorway and inner city traffic. Return trip of 120klms. Fuel reading of 7.6lt/100klms! The 265/60/18 Dynapro's I just fitted and the Panther Tuning box (different thread) have made an immense difference. The Treg now rides better, sticks to the road better, more mumbo (torque) and the speedo is now spot on with the GPS due to the extra rolling diameter. A HUGE difference just on that 1st initial trip over 100klms. So far, there tyres are awesome! Best thing is Hankook make them available in many different sizes. More than happy to recommend them, even at this early stage.

Hi Oilslurper,

Firstly thanks for your interesting posts.

Sounds like you are a happy camper. How are the noise levels of the new tyres compared to your previous set of Ventus? I guess with wear over time this may change. I am looking forward to your successive reports on the tyres and also your Panther chip.

Thanks again for your many inputs.

Cheers,
CamB

CanB. I've owned my Treg for 27 months. I guess you get a feel for it and then get used to it. In the past week, I now have a new 'beast'. It's as cut a dry as that. It's a different animal, totally in the way it rides and when I give it a "kick in the gut's with my right foot. I can vouch after one decent frip of 120klms that my fuel consumption is outstanding. Both the upgrades have contributed. And yes, I'm a "happy camper". Expectations to date are exceeded! Money well and truly spent on tangibles. As for noise, may even be quieter. Hankook have a really decent A/T tyre here and if they build these like the Ventus ST, they'll wear well with correct rotation. I have 25,000klms on my Ventus and not much wear, certainly less than 30%.

Hi again Oilslurper,

I feel much the same after trading my '07 R5 on the new V6 tdi only a month ago (at your local dealer actually). The differences in the two cars are huge and I would imagine, that in time, once used to the new car in its excellent standard guise, I will look towards making some improvements to enhance again the experience.

Again, thank you and looking forward to your future reports.

Cheers,
CamB

Your warranty is an issue. Did you get the RNS510? I did a thread a few months back on an after market HU-excellent unit with satnav. This is a buy you could do without worrying about warranty, but, I suggest you keep your original HU. Chipping the Treg I would not suggest until it's out of warranty. Tyres - I got a near new set of Audi Q7 18" for $380 and shipped from Vic for $80 and that will give you better handling and you'll be able to go to 18" A/T's. There's a market on eBay for 17's if you want to sell yours. They'll get sold as a set or spare for other Treggers wanting to get rid of the space saver.

My take would be as follows, if load ratings are met then any size. For best handling I would think the lowest profile will give the best outcome. My reasoning is less flex withh shorter side walls , which should mean better control.

That's a fair comment and should always work out if you tow on good surfaces and only stick with them. My only hassle with wheels and tyres is living in this country where the non-arterial roads are at best average to totally crap. Pot holes/craters etc being my concern. If you want to multi task your Treg, then that's where you need to get it right with 1 x set of wheels. The Yanks/Canadians run with summer and winter tyres. So I guess they run 2 x sets.
