Coming home from dinner last nite I had a error message of "defective wheel on board" after I started car. It said left rear so I got down to check and nothing. Continued to drive home and on half way, it said "flat type", again got down and checked, nothing.

Looks like a defective sensor to me. Anyone has a similar experience?

Yep. It is very common with the Touareg. The is probably nothing wrong with the tire pressure just the tire monitor. Anyhow, check the tire pressure with a guage just to be safe and inform the dealer at your next service appointment. They will most likely replace the senor. Mine went away on its own after a week.

I still find it ironic that our first inclination is that the car has malfunctioned. Sometimes a flat tire warning really does mean you have a flat tire! :confused2:

True. But I think the TPMs have produced more errors than true info about low tire pressures.

Well, after a few days of trying to reset the TPM I was still getting error message so I decided to go to a local garage and jacked the car up to have a detail search on the tires. After several minutes, we found a small nail in the left rear tire, which was then pulled out and the tire repaired. One more reset with the TPM and the error message went away. :joy:

I feel embrassed to have accused the TPM when I should have looked more in more details. However, it is also saying something about our feeling towards these electronic guardians, or the lack of trust of them. Afterall, it did what it was designed to. The error was with me instead.

Thanks to all who provided their valuable opinions, especially 4x4, who pointed out exactly what the problem was. I am now both relieved and embrassed.

I had found a spike in my rear right tire the day after I got my T-REG back from the dealer for the right pull problem I posted in that thread. The dealer had another T-REG on the lot and swapped rims for me free of charge (good thing because there seems to be a week or more back log in getting that 17" Dunlop tire. When I was leaving the dealership on the way home, I recieved a Tire Pressure Monitor Fault on the MFI so I called them up and they said it just needed to be reset. Now.....here's my question/issue I was hoping somebody on the board could help me with: That night before I brought the truck back in to have the TPMS system reset, I did some digging in the Owner's Manual. According to the Owner's Manual, I should be able to go to the CONV setting and call up the TYRE Pressure setting and see what each tire is reading. When I selected it all it gave me was a front pressure of 43. and a back pressure of 44. The owners manual says to look on the driver's side door jam to get the air specs for the tires on the T-REG. The sticker states for a cold tire the front should read 36 psi and the back should read 43 psi. Also it mentioned anything over 2.9 psi should give you a fault and the front is way above that? Also, in the manual it states I should be able to turn the TPMS OFF if I was to installl tires that didn't support the system.....no ON/OFF feature is available. Also If I did put new tires or did a realighnment of sorts I should be able to put the TPMS in a RE-LEARN mode so the TPMS relearns my tires pressures....once again no such setting is available to me.

So the bottom line is:
1. I only show two tire pressure readings one front and one back (HOW DO i KNOW WHAT TIRE THE DAMN THING IS READING).

2. I don't have the ability to turn off the TPMS if I was using tires that did't support.

3. I don't have the ability to make the system relearn my tire pressures after tire work was done to my T-REG.

When I expressed my concerns to my dealerships service department, they had their resident T-REG service guy look into it. He said he compared my T-REG to another on the lot and the one on the lot did what was advirtised in the manual. He called VW tech line and they told him, my TPMS is what it is....it does not have all the other features available to it. Does anybody else have the same dumbed down TPMS or are they just wrong in their findings and I need a new module. He did reset the TPMS and the fault went away, and has not come back yet (only driven the truck twice since). But I'm still not convinced or happy with the answer I was given about the lack of TPMS features. Any opinions or help would be gratly appreciated.

Yes, VW seems to have dumbed down the TPMS. As long as it will learn the proper pressures and give you warnings when one tire starts to lose air, you should be OK.

In 2005 the system is an option. We are hoping to get one without the option on a VAGCOM so we can see the coding changes that shut the system down as there are some people who aren't using wheels with sensors in them and they get a warning every time they start the car.

Thanks...I just reposted (impatient), thinking the old starting post date may keep people from reading it. I'm fine with the way it is...I just wanted to make sure the dealer wasn't trying to dupe me. Can you ask for the upgraded module if this one fails?

my car will be going into the dealership for the 3rd for the Tire pressure monitor. Lets see if they can fix it this time. over 30 days in service in about a 9 month ownership period.....

I face this problem from the first month of owning, the solution is to refill your tires with Nitrogen gas and re-learn your TPMS. The Nitrogen gas doesn’t worn when you drive the car, and that lead to a fixed tire pressure approximately best than the normal air. The other thing, you must believe your TPMS, which give you a correct pressure indication, tray to check your tire pressure with external gauge!!!

Thanx

I have an option on my mfi - to turn off tpms - would this not perform the same function?
