There seems to be lots of wrong information on resetting your transmission learned behavior. So if this info allready exist in faq somewhere, please delete.

Proper and only way to reset transmission is for example using vcds. Go to transmission -> basic settings 04 -> channel 001 and press go. It should now say system in grundeinstellung. Press done and exit.

Pressing gas pedal has nothing to do with transmission.

Interesting. That was the advice I was give by a VW Dealer Service Manager... I will have a look with VCDS tomorrow...this has me very interested..

Thanks

The Throttle pedal thing is doing something for I have noticed a difference every time after I have done it. I know on my Ex's Passat it made it more driveable after it was done the way described in post. It was not imagined either. Her car had a very dead feel to it when you went to punch it to pull out. After I did the pedal reset it drove differently and was better off the line.

Wow – this thread was so awesome.
Had a cold spell here mid December. Temperature went to -35degC for a few days and killed the battery. Attempting to start was an orchestra of an electrical seizure. Performed a battery charge, Teg started and off we went. Since then, the engine was revving higher than usual and the transmission felt like a slush-box.
Saw your post and = light bulb. Used the VCDS to reset the transmission = bingo. Performing perfectly as original.
…. Just awesome!

My friend that works at dealer said that there is also a learning routine that includes brakings to stop and steady speed driving, but all those requirements fill while normal driving over time, just bit more slowely.

That throttle pedal trick is for kickdown and throttle valve resetting.
Probably something else too for engine ecu.

У моего Golf 4 определенно была реакция, я поворачивал ключ и нажимал педаль газа до упора в течение 20 секунд, выключал его через 20 секунд и затем заводил машину! Это была совершенно другая машина после этой процедуры.

If you have any more information like this please feel free to post it. You never stop learning stuff about these cars, and I tend to find that everybody has part of the story but few have to full picture.

If you have any more info on any learning procedures I for one would be keen to find out.

Engine control unit can be reset the sameway, just cant remember if the channel was 001 also there. It might have been also 002 or 003. Vcds tells you to press brake and throttle pedal to reset.

I worked at the dealer bodyshop seven years before. There friends at vw and audi service told me some usefull stuff.

My info on this came from a Touareg technician.

Seems to do something as a number of folk with dodgy gear changes have benefited from it over the years!

Ignition on, but do not start the engine.

Press the accelerator pedal firmly to the floor and hold it there for a full 10 seconds.

Release the pedal.

Turn the ignition off and remove the key.

Now go outside, do a handstand and shout rude words at your neighbours!

I don't recall ever seeing anyone post that they had done so.

Part of the process is to check using VCDS or similar for any gearbox faults before the "standing on your head and shouting rude words at the neighbours" bit but as most folk don't have VCDS, and the reset seems to work regardless, I stopped typing that part of the process!

I'm curious to know how frequently the adaptive behavior will change. I went on a 6 hour roadtrip and at some point I noticed the pedal/RPM response definitely changed. I had to push the pedal further in to accelerate than before I left (not a bad thing on the highway). However you get to stop and go traffic and it absolutely blows and it didn't know what gear to be in or how to downshift cleanly. A day or two later of city driving and it seems to have changed back to before. So is it based on average number of shift points? Miles?

My "new" 2016 had 1000 miles on the clock has a different shift program than my 2012 had. Transmission holds gears longer when cold and wants to down shift whenever I give the car a modest power call. It doesn't allow the torque of this engine to push the power request. Un necessary shifting down in my opinion. The beauty of a TDI is it's low end power and pulling capability that is lost in this shifting program. I will use it a while longer to see if this changes as I use it.

Tadpole, find user yrktreg and get his trans recode done on your Treg. You’ll get back what your earlier model has. Highly recommend. I met him last week to have this done on mine

Good evening.i have just purchased a second hand towrag 2008 model 2.5 diesel I believe its the R5 engine. I seem to notice a bit of snatching what I mean by snatching the revs suddenly dip and then come back up while I'm driving around 30mph. I don't really notice it above this speed (motorway driving) I was wondering if any one else experienced this problem. The car will be going to see a VW specialist (A friend) and a vag com will be used to scan the ECU. But in the mean time I was just wondering if anyone can shed any light on this problem.

Regards Kiefer.
