hi everyone , i am new to the forum and i see there are a lots of posts regarding the hitches. i currently have a curt hitch installed and am now looking for the wiring harness kit for it. i have heard that the aftermarket ones cause a lot of problems for the electronics on board. i am looking for an OEM trailer wiring harness. any suggestions as to where i can get one cheaper than at the dealers. i live in canada so i would prefer a place in canada and if has to come from the states then a place that is willing to ship to canada. thanxs

I am assuming you have the electrical already ready with a dummy plug or you have no wiring at all??

You can buy the 7 pin connector from a number of places (I bought mine at Waytek but found their pricing ridiculous in terms of add ons, handling etc.). I then added a Bully bar LED hitch cover but am having problems with the VW specific adapter from e-trailer which I'm debugging as we speak with them. The bar is 4 pin, the vehicle is 7 pin. HTH

Is it really impossible to believe that one cannot run the trailer lights off the the rear tail lights? what does it do to the computer with such little draw. Even a relay set up draws so little power.

If you have an older T1 model, I would say other than it not being elegant you could run them off your tail lights assuming all you want is the stop function. However on the new ones, the computer system monitors all currents and if sees a discrepancy it will throw a check bulb as it does currently with mine.

You sure about this...? :confused2:

I wouldn't know. My T1 came with a factory hitch. What I DO know is that I have all the functionality you have, i.e. "check bulb" function and alarm connection. I wouldn't try to "splice" into the wiring, even on a T1.

I don't have a brake controller, though. I think electric trailer brakes are still illegal here.

I said that because on the T1s electrical monitoring wasn't as critically checked as in the T2 where HID and other swap outs caused issues...

Buy the wiring harness. I know its not what you want to hear, but its the right solution. You will gain the advantage of different shift points and tailight bulb monitoring so hopefully this makes it worth the expense.

You could try and tap into the tailights, but you will risk bulb warnings go off etc (T1 and T2 behave the same in this respect).

I'm still unclear here. Do you have a hitch and simply are looking for the correct connector or you don't have ANY electric connections but have the hitch itself, or you have nothing at all?

another a question this kit that was recommended from etrailer will operate the lights on the trailer only right? if i were pulling a trailer with electric brakes would i need to install a seperate brake controller? the trailer is a camper and weighs roughly 2200 lbs. also what exactly if any does the OEM control module serve/do ?

Yes, you would need a brake controller. This only provides lights from your 7 pin controller to the trailer (meaning brake light, running light, turn signals and reverse light).

In Europe they've now switched to a 12 pole set up allowing for vertical lift off etc.
