So for a few days I've been trying to find the winch option that came on the factory european Touareg Expedition. I searched on here and VWvortex, and used google but came up with little information. So I called my local VW dealer and talked to a parts person, gave him the information to see if he could get part numbers and prices if it were even possible.

Well he found out the information, but VW wont sell the kit without a vehicle vin number, and VW wont authorize the kit to be sold on an american Touareg. I'm going to call him back today and see if there are some loop holes we can work through. Just thought I'd share some information with the forum!

If I had to guess it is a liability thing and since the US is pretty sue happy, they probably don't want that coming to the states. You may have to get it by other means.

Pretty sure that was a concept model. Not something sold in USA or Europe. There are no parts listed in the electronic catalog for this either.

There is a German company that makes a winch for the Touareg. But once you find out how much it costs ($1675 for the mounting kit plus the cost of the winch itself), how much it will cost to ship to the USA (est. $350), and how much it will cost to install (est. $500), I doubt you will still want one.

Hi,

New here and wanted to respond to this rather old thread.

I just did a search of used Touaregs for sale in my area (central Germany) and found that there were in fact winches installed as factory options. There are at least half a dozen Tregs so equipped and on the market. I just find it rather odd that none were equipped with the air suspension.

The link might be broken, the page only displays a number ones. Maybe my work computer doesnt have the language pack installed.

If you rally need a winch, the best solution is to get one that plugs into the hitch reciever. You don't have to carry all that weight all the time.

Actually when they told me that the parts could only be ordered/installed on a European Treg, I replied with a "what if I provide you a European vin." The rep caught my drift and said he would look into it, but VWoA wont even sell the parts to American Dealers.

Another option that I use is a handwinch, far more versatile but slower and hard work.:)

Winch

Does anyone know if there's harness points on the underbody? If I can't find a good mounting option, I'm thinking of using some 8 gauge aluminum sheets to make my own cradle, if there's harness points it'll make it easy, if not it'll make it difficult :)

While I had my Treg on the lift, with the suspension torn apart, I looked into making a kit for myself. It is very possible to create a mount using the front tow hook mounts, where they bolt to the subframe on either side of the radiator. You will have to redesign the small vertical mount that goes in the center of the grill, not a big deal. There is plenty of room behind the grill.
I also looked at the kit offered at Seilwinde Hardtop Fahrwerk - Taubenreuther GmbH - Ihr professioneller Anbieter für Offroad Zubehör but the huge price made me say no. Once I finish the lift kit I will create a winch mount for a small 9000lb winch.
As for the wiring, I doubt VW made it available without the kit, and probably only installed on those with that option from the factory, but I do not know for sure.

I have been studying that 0.R.C. Treg with winch picture for a while now. I like how the winch is concealed within the bumper. I just do not know how reputable the comany is to purchase from them.

To make it alittle lighter, you can replace the steel cable with the synthetic winch line.

- Mikes06, I am interested in your winch mount for a 9000lb winch. So, please, keep us up-to-date.

Does anyone know how the winch on the trans-sibera Porsche Cayenne is mounted? The PR blurb I read said it is removable to allow storage in a special mount in the cargo area. Wonder if it could be adapted?

Well lookee what I found.
It's in Spanish, but the pictures tell the story.
The only thing that may be an issue is how much the radiator is blocked.
Also no guide rollers for the cable.
Otherwise a nice clean install.

Nice, clean install. I'll have to pull out the translator tonight on see exactly what it says. I've know for years that it is possible to do. There is more than adequate space behind the nose. I worry about interference with the transmission cooler from the decreased airflow.

I agree the Spanish instal is very neat, but they've blocked 60-70% of the airflow to the radiators and put a heat generating electric motor in front of them thus adding to the overall heat load when winching at low speed with no airflow over the rads.

I'd be interested to see the effects on coolant temperature and what the fans are doing.

So they removed and welded spacers and mounting plate to the bumper, it isn't much of a stretch to visualize a hitch mounted to the front bumper, much like the rear bumper is used for the hitch. That way you could mount the winch to the hitch.

Craig Moffat of 4x4 Megaworld in Johannesburg offered me a " hidden" (recessed?) mounting kit for a front winch when I had my V10 roofrack fitted by him a couple of years ago. At the time I did not have the need so did not note the pricing but will ask next week as it may be of interest on this forum. It was a German product and, I think, about half the price of the winch itself

#27 ·
Please do post any information you have on that winch solution.

I can't get any answers out of Megaworld but found some notes from mid 2008 and the mounting kit was R5760 equal to around $750 plus $100 to fit. winch would then be additional. not a cheap exercise......!!

Touareg Winch Mount

No one ships there winch mount to the US. I ordered a wireless winch and a winch mount. Taking all the front panels is time consuming. Welding the mount and setting the winch and running the wires takes a few hours. Testing and reinstalling the front takes up a a few hours.
The 10,500lb {you pick your size winch} winch is hidden just the hook shows. If anyone on the east cost whats one installed. You furnish the wireless winch and I will install it for $1500.00 and two days of your time. The Warn with the air compresser WILL NOT WORK. You can't get to it.
