This week I took my sister with me in the Touareg on a 3 hour each way highway excursion, crossing the Oregon Cascades with a 5000 foot change in elevation. We spent a couple days in Central Oregon, took some day trips.

Out of the clear blue and with no prompting from me she remarked "This is the most comfortable and quiet highway driving trip I've ever been on. The seat fits perfect. The ride is smooth and quiet. This is much better than my (2010) Accord."

Well me I have a big wide grin when she confirms what I already know. How cool is that! ;)

Climbing and descending various grades, the TDI + 8-speed Aisin never hunted. It picks the right gear and sticks with it. I VAG-COM'd it so I can see what it's doing, displays the gear number. The only time I overruled it with Tiptronic was while descending from Culver to the bottom of the Crooked River gorge, 7% grade, to get more engine braking. Aside from that it was flawless.

Jip. My T1 R5 did 700km in 6hrs and 10minutes the other day at 10.5l/100km.

Cant really complain about that!

I drive (on average) 25k miles per year - the T3 is the most comfortable vehicle I have ever owned.

I recently drove 3700 km from Vancouver BC to Sonoma CA along the coast highway (101) over the mountains to Truckee CA, the back via Crater Lake and Portland OR.

Family wedding in Sonoma so Thule box on roof for wedding clothes and shoes (so many shoes!) and four adults inside; I am 6'7"; future SIL is 6'3"; future DIL is 5'11"; my fiancee 5'7". Carried food and wine in addition to more clothes. Trunk was full. Averaged 9L/100km (26 USmpg).

Very comfortable with lots of power when needed. Love the TDI.

Picked up our 2007 last Wednesday and did a 800 mile round trip to Phoenix over the weekend. Not a skip or miss, ran smooth as silk with the V1 and cruise control, was able to make great time. Torrential rain and no leaks, very happy with the Treg so far. Look forward to towing my track car all over the west next year.

We've done that run a couple of times. Other than going through the Appalachian's its super boring, but a swift traffic crowd. Everyone seems to be doing 80+ which is such a sweet spot for the Touareg.

Our last run was a one way back to NYC in a new-ish 20K miles Toyota Highlander. What a crap box. Even my wife - who very much wanted a Volvo or Benz, said (unsolicited), "...sure wish we were in the Touareg" ;)

I think the "comfort" of the T3 is something that is not touted enough.

I've owned allot of vehicles and as I get older (59 now) and I have a bad back that is uber sensitive, the comfort of a vehicle has become extremely important to me.

We own two T3s (13 LUX and 14 EXEC) and they are both smooth as glass - they are just easy and enjoyable to drive:

1) TDI power plant is effortless - it gets with the program with zero fuss
2) 8 speed power train is like silk, but quick and responsive in all situations
3) Cabin is quiet as a mouse
4) Handling is not "loosey goosey" and it is not so stiff that it becomes annoying creating fatigue - it is "just right"
5) Overall solidity of the platform inspires confidence, makes able the quietness and is also the foundation for T3's comfort. People have said the Touareg feels as solid as a vault - I like this description.

I am describing the T3 having never owned one of the prior generations, which I don't mean to exclude, I just have experience with the two I have owned.

Cheers - can't way for the 15!

Looking forward to my next big trip in a few months time 1300 km and 16 hours from Sutherland NSW to Orchard Beach Fraser Island QLD. The last 80 or 90 kms is along the beach highway / runway.

A weeks rest and then back again. All in a spring T1 running 40 PSI which has never given me back pain
