Touareg FTW!!!

I just bought a CPO 2010 Touareg TDI, and I'm mostly happy with it so far. I'm having some trouble with the TPMS system--it will randomly work then stop then tell me to go back to the dealer. Not so fun.

My Touareg is fairly basic, unfortunately. I am trying to find a way to retrofit the stock navigation and backup camera, and I'm not having much luck. My dealer gave me the, 'pull a random, prohibitively high estimate from your butt' response when I asked how much it would cost. So, I'm hoping that I can find someone here that can help me with that.

I'm also hoping to find a way to integrate some form of integration for my Zune. Please don't bother saying iPod--my partner works for Microsoft, so the iPod is a non-starter.

Any advice for the new guy?

Thank you.

Well, evidently fitting an RNS510 nav unit appropriate to a 2010 model should be plug and play or nearly so. For older Ts such as 04s to 07s there are a number of threads on this site where people bought the year-appropriate/version appropriate units and apparently it was plug and play. But I understand RNS510s retail between $2K and $4K, YMMV.

Now, rearview cams can be fitted but often require wiring all the way from the back and if VW OEM, on many if not all years an additional controller is required.

May want to go via the aftermarket route.

For cam you will need the nav unit, the control unit, the hatch handle, the oem camera, and the wiring harness. cam parts are around $600, nav unit seems to go for around $2K.

I have an '09 with a back-up camera. The camera loads very slow in reverse and will continue to do so until VW comes out with an updated firmware. Something you may want to think about before alot of time and energy is wasted in running wire all the way back to the rear.

Well first off I'm real sorry to hear your partner works for such an outfit

There are many VAR solutions to your rear camera desire one of which would project the image onto your inside rear view mirror (would have to be replaced) for example with the camera mounted in the key slot (also would need to be replaced). Retrofitting it onto your existing head unit would be like... well like expecting a good OS from Micro$oft  Not likely to be worth it for the former or realistic for the latter. (all in good fun of course) :D

So far...

...I've talked to a couple dealers, and they have quoted around $2k for the parts, but they keep saying they're not sure if I would need a new wiring harness under the dash. Really? With all their parts catalogs, shop manuals and diagrams, the best they can do is to tell me the parts will be around $2k but they might have to rewire the car so labor could be up to $2-3k? WTH?

It definately doesn't have the harness for the camera unit. buy it from kufatec Rear View Camera - Harness - VW Touareg [35566] - $123.95 : Kufatec USA, Inc., The #1 Supplier of OEM Volkswagen & Audi Retrofit Harnesses in the World

Again as per my post up above you need the camera, the handle, the wire harness (link above), the control unit and the head unit. Replace the OEM handle with the camera and handle, run wire to the control unit...from the control unit run it up to your head unit and you're done.
