Here are some pictures of my brothers 2010 V6 TDI (loaded) from this past weekend. The oncoming Isuzu Trooper lost traction in the snow and came across into his lane with extremely little warning. My brother hit him broadside at about 25-30mph, with a closing speed of approximately 60-65mph. Drivers side airbag deployed.

As you can see, the Trooper did not fare well in the crash and the passenger side door is pushed back to the FRAME. Fortunately, he was not carrying any passengers. By brother had his whole family in his car, including a toddler and infant. They are banged up with the usual crash injuries (whiplash, etc), but walked away from the crash.

At this point, it appears that the Touareg is totaled. It did it's job and protected my brother and his family in their time of need. I'm glad he took my recommendation to buy a Touareg! He's on the hunt for another 2010 V6 TDI with Air, so any recommendations or leads are appreciated.

That confirms the touareg is a tank :) Glad everything went fine at the end..

Glad that everyone was safe, and that my brother has a Touareg to protect his family as well! His wife looking to upgrade Tiguan or Touareg next time too because of the feel of the Touareg vs. her Honda CRV.

Wow! The Touareg's performance in the crash doesn't surprise me but the damage to that Trooper is astounding. If your brother wasn't a believer I'm betting he is now. Glad to hear they are all okay considering.

I convinced my younger brother to buy a B5 Passat in 2005 and a similar situation happened. He had it for two months and was distracted (answered his cell phone and missed a stop sign that was partially blocked by a tree as noted in the police report) enough to get broadsided on the passenger side by an S4 that was supposedly (questionable) only doing 35 miles an hour. His car flipped one-and-a half times, both side curtain air bags deployed which kept his head from contacting the pavement through his shattered driver side window and they had to cut him out of the car with the jaws of life and strap him to a board. Aside from some cuts from glass, minor whiplash, a bruised shin and a lost flip-flop, he was able to go home a few hours later. When the check for that car was cut, he bought a Jetta wagon.

My older brother has a Touareg as well. Now I need to work on my little sister. ;-)

I don't think a passenger would have survived in that trooper. The Treg looks completely intact in the areas that matter.

Good to hear your bro and family made it out safe. The #1 reason I drive a Touareg is safety in a collision.

I didn't realize that the front fenders on the Touareg are fiberglass.

Glad to hear the family was okay.

they are plastic. hood is aluminium. both are designed with pedestrian impact in mind so they tend to tear away quickly in a crash. the real protection is under the skin.

Main thing is both parties are not seriously injured. The trooper looks like it faired a lot worse because he was T boned by a solid built Touareg

I'm waiting to hear back from him, but based on the pictures, I'm guessing that the entire engine assembly and subframe were pushed back, so there is a good chance that there is crush damage to the front of the block. He told me insurance was saying $30K of damage. Not sure if that was a ball park estimate, but I want to hear the detailed repair report before accepting it as a total loss.

Another picture of the Isuzu. I bet it's really good at making right hand turns now!

Yikes! I hope they're all doing alright. I'm glad they weren't in the Trooper.

Thanks for sharing. It's a good reminder for when I think about getting a "city" car, like a Fiat 500, to run around town in.

Mass is everything...

Ok, well-built, well-designed mass is everything.

I once hit an unsighted solid cast iron bollard hard with my plastic fender backing out of a parking space. Silly old me had forgotten the bollard was there whilst I'd been shopping! It just sprang back out!

Look up under your T1/2 fender on a really sunny day - you can "see" through it!

It is doubtful. There is black sheathing or lagging (can not find proper english word) as a protection from gravel. But the plastic is visible itself. Watch this buff colour arc at the picture below. 100% carbon (kidding). This is the question to VW about the quality of coating.

Treg is a tank,

Had an accident 2 years ago, was driving to north part of the country while the south was full with tourists. It took me 2 hours to cover 10 miles because the traffic was extremely busy, as soon as I got on a clear road i hit the gas.. Entered a curve at 40 mph, there were two cars parked with no singns at all, couldn't pass them because a van was getting on the other side so i hit them, the first car I hit was a ford c-max which had a trailer hitch, the impact was so hard that i crooked his hitch in his rear bumper and distort his trunk door, broken his tail lights, since the impact was so hard the ford moved forward and broke an audi a4 fender which was in front of him. I thought i destroyed my car, got out and saw that only the middle plastic bumper was damaged a bit, the total fix was 20$ on two other cars the ford repair costs were near 800$ and the audis 200$.

We hit a deer frontal at about 65 mph on a highway and our 2.5 year old Touareg with its weight drove through the animal without even losing much speed.

The damage didn't look too bad but the front airbags and all 5 seatbelt fasteners deployed. At the end it was a total loss as the replacement of airbags, the console (which brakes when the passenger airbag deploys) and the seat belts were more than 2/3 of the costs.

Needless to say that we bought another Touareg from the insurance money!

I too have a 2010 TDI that is pretty much loaded and love the car but can tell you this about costs of repair. I believed the park assist sensors were more effective than they are and hit a low concrete wall at very low speed while maneuvering out of a parking lot. The sensors didn't register a thing in spite of reacting to shrubbery flanking my driveway, but the damage to the front bumper (including the destruction of two of said sensors) and one of the fog lamps amounted to more than $5,000 in repairs. As a result my insurance rates slightly more than doubled and won't settle back down to a reasonable amount until three years have elapsed.

I think the car is great but the bluetooth system is the worst there is and the park assist sensors simply are not dependable. The important part of their name is "assist".

"Assist" is just that and no more.

Just like the captain of a ship, a car driver is totally responsible for vehicular navigation, low concrete posts or no low concrete posts.

I've done it too, by the way, on a huge cast iron bollard, but my plastic fender bounced back unharmed.

I'm trying hard to think how your repair bill came to $5K?!

#27 ·
He probably damaged the radiator and other bits too..5K is a huge amount of money..

To be honest I was a little shocked but the insurance people went over the bill with a fine tooth comb and didn't disallow a penny. There are a hell of a lot of parts in that area and they are all expensive. By the time you throw in labor to take it apart and put it back together it gets pretty pricey. I do remember that one of the shockers was that the harness for the busted park assist sensors was something north of $400 just for the part. These are not cheap cars.
