Tire pressure, whats your take?

So looking at all these tires from Hercules Terra TraC II, to Cooper AT3, At/W in sizes 245/70/17 and 255/65/17. Problem is most of the tires have a max pressure of 44 psi.

Terra Trac II 245/70/17 (LT245/70R17/10 119/116R OWL) 3000lb max load, 80 PSI but weights 42.91lbs.

Terra Trac II 245/70R17 110T OWL is 44 psi, 2337 lbs max load, 34lbs each and all the rest have 44 psi in the tires I want similar specs if not the same.

I plan on disabling the TPMS as running 46 psi in rear and 39 psi front factory recommendations seems off to me. I have read through posts on this but I prefer to run 39 front/rear or even 39 rear and 38 front. I like to have room for heat expansion.

My tires now have 44 psi max (Michelin MTX M+S), rears at max pressure (44psi) fronts at 39. Rides like a truck. I think I will remove TPMS through Vag-com and pull fuse. I hate the system anyway as I prefer to be able to adjust my pressures and you can't do anything via the display.

thoughts?

I asked a similar question yesterday on the max tire size thread.

2014 with Nokian rotiiva At plus, LT245/70r17 load range E tires, 3000 lbs @80 psi max. I started with 36F/42R which is +3 from VW stock spec. I found the ride harsh and steering twitchy. I also noticed about 1/4" inner and outer edges of each tire not fully contacting the road. I'm now running 33f/38r for the last week or so. Ride is comfortable but not sporty.

I don't have the sensors in my wheels and I disabled the tpms with vagcom. I didn't need to pull a fuse.

I don't feel the touareg needs tires that max out at 80Psi. It cannot handle much more than 42psi, then it starts riding hard. Especially unloaded rear. I will disable TPMS and run std AT tires. Plus they are lighter.

No intention of running 80 psi. That would support nearly two loaded Touaregs. I like the tougher sidewall and 17/32 mm tread. And they're among the lightest e range tire weighing 39.9 lbs. My mpg seems to have taken about a 5-10% hit.

Just turned that stupid thing off, I check my pressures all the time! I am big on this. I can usually tell when a tire is off in PSI as well. Remember those days without these things? Little more work but I am not sure this system is worth the trouble until I can find a way to change settings for PSI. I mean it is nice to have but I wish we had control over the set pressures.

Speaking of leaks

Couple weeks ago I pulled out of the garage and before I got to the street I got a TPMS alert. Right-rear. I pulled over and looked at it and the tire looked fine. TPMS said 26 PSI. Figured it was a TPMS malfunction but checked with a manual gauge anyway. Sure enough it was 26. It had lost about 14 PSI overnight.

Found a nail pierced the tire right in the middle of the footprint, causing a slow leak.

Without TPMS I would have been doing 75 on the freeway on a dangerous tire.

In my '10 TDI with steel suspension, I run my snow tires (Nokian Hakka R2 SUV, 255/65-17) at 39F / 46R. I generally keep them right around that and won't let them get much lower, though I'll tolerate it if it sits outside in really cold/snowy weather. It's an absolute tank in the snow - I've never been stuck or had an issue, even in 12"+ of cold snow over ice on steep grades, but if I had to air them down I could.

The only time I "air down" is offroad on my Wrangler AT Adventure (255/65-17 also) - I'll take them down to about 35F/42R just to make them a little softer on washboards and rutted/potholed stuff - but that's not enough to really improve traction over rocks. Otherwise it's 39/46 per the factory recommendation. I guess since I have a 5% taller sidewall than OEM I could leave them aired down for the road, but I don't have a VAG-COM so I can't change the set points, and I like the way it feels at the recommended pressures.

Even with the tall sidewalls, the Wranglers handle great on the road....

I once asked my dealer to lower the lower warning limit since it seems my TPMS reliably reads 2lbs low against every tire gauge I've ever used, but they refused and said VAG disabled that capability due to North American regulations related to TPMS systems. I take that with some suspicion, but I've never been inclined to investigate further. I also have to over-inflate my tires (like 44/50) to get the TPMS to register, then I can take them down to whatever I want. If I take them up only to the recommended pressures, I just get exclamation marks and the low pressure idiot light, and they never re-set.

What I find interesting is there's an addendum to the 2016 scheduled maintenance on mine. Says no more tire rotations. Air pressure called for is 33/39. I don't see how they can wear evenly without rotating.

Any thoughts on this?

The 20" wheels/tires seem to be overly sensitive to vibrations, so I don't rotate on my Touareg. I thought I'd see uneven wear, but tire wear has remained even front to back. I just pulled the winter tires, and after two winters all four tires have virtually identical tread depth. I saw the same on the OE Goodyears when I replaced them last year, and they were never rotated.

I do rotate on my wife's car every spring/fall when swapping out the winters, but I never cross-rotate. Tires always remain on the same side of the vehicle whether directional or not.

Run the pressures, rotate the tires. I don't believe this anymore than I believe in lifetime fluids.

I just rotated mine. Fronts worn more than rears, so I am guessing not rotating addendum was made during Oktoberfest.

Touaregs normally wear their tires pretty evenly.

But then I don't cheapskate and always bin my tyres when 50% worn.

Nieher do I. Fronts obviously wear more due to several factors, braking, turning, tire pressures, tire quality, tread pattern, worn suspension) and weight.

Large wheels like 20" wear more as well. I am not a fan of this size on a touareg. I think 18" is max these vehicles should have. I like 17" the best! I have nearly perfect wear on mine over a 2 1/2 year period with 1 rotation. Tires were worn in front very slightly compared to rears, running Michelin LTX M+S. and moving to Coopers next.

I agree with Noobs, Tire quality is Huge. I only run the best tire I can find. The Michelins have been top notch. I also run them on my other cars, a long with goodyear F1 Assy. on my alfa romeo. I had michelins on my allroad and going with Hercules Terra Trac II (made by Cooper) or Cooper AT3 for the treg.

I suggest rotating, always, just like I suggest changing trans fluid, brake fluid, coolant every 2 years. Oil/filter/ air filter every 10K miles (depending on your conditions), changing rear diff, center and transfer case fluid around 60K miles (also depending on conditions and vehicle function).

The new Pressures sound more appropriate. 33/39. I am running 38/39. Maybe 40PSI if loaded. Have to account for thermal expansion and with tires with a 44psi max, that's getting close.

Now, can someone tell me how to change PSI in vag-com?? I was told it was possible but with no answer to how that is possible!

I think you will find that the max pressure shown on the sidewall (44psi) is max COLD inflation pressure, normally there should be no more than a 4-5psi increase due to temperature increases providing you tyres are not under inflated to start with.

I'm sure the tyre manufacturer has factored in a safety margin due to thermal expansion when setting the max cold pressure rating of the tyre.

I think it might depend also on which MFD color vs red you have, I believe I can adjust the target pressure when in the Setting menu without vagcom.

I will give this a try mañana!

[Select]
[65-Tire Pressure]
[Adaptation 10]
Put 05 in the Channel Number field, then click [Read].
(Read is only necessary if you edit the Channel Number, if you change the Channel Number using the Up/Dn buttons, you Read is done for you automatically).
The Stored Value field will tell you what's currently in that channel. Change the New Value field to the desired value, most likely 1 less than what's already there.
[Test]
(This is only necessary if you edit the New Value, if you change the New Value using the Up/Dn buttons, Test is done for you automatically)
[Save]

Here is my writeup on how to adjust the tire pressure in your TPMS. Sorry for the delay. This is done on a 2008 V8 Touareg. Other T2s should be similar, I would expect.

You have to enter the pressure in bar, so for those of you who think in PSI, you will have to have your smart phone handy to translate the numbers.

As always, do this at your own risk. :- )

Our last set of tires had more tire wear in the center of the tire at the recommended tire pressure. The over inflated tires certainly have a much shorter life. >:

OK so reviving an old thread because I didn't want to start another "tire pressure" one, especially to ask a weird question in relation to the tire pressure.
Question is.... Has anyone noticed that their TPMS do not read/register certain pressures?
In my case I noticed that 34psi never shows up on the display when adjusting the tires pressures due to weather changes. It goes from 33psi to 35psi. I also think 37psi doesn't show as well, just jumps from 36psi to 38psi. Oddly enough 39psi shows no problem.
I'm wondering if it's a German programming/translation thing.

#31 ·
OK, so does anyone have theirs converted to and displayed as 34psi?

Makes sense. Just wanted to confirm with others in the know. Thanks.
