TDI Oil Change Interval

So for you TDI folks with the 10K service interval.....how are you feeling about it? Do you think we should feel confident that the Castrol SLX 5w30 will fully protect for the duration?

I went ahead and had the dealer change mine at 5,000 miles and now I am in for the 10k free service.

If I were leasing or planning to keep this rig for 3-4 years, I wouldn't care. But I am honestly thinking I will try to keep this one for a couple of hundred thousand if I can. Which leads to the big question.....will 5k mile oil changes help the engine survive to 200-300k miles better than 10k mile changes.

I would honestly hope that the...nearly 9 liter sump....can easily handle 10k OCI's (oil change intervals).

Based on the opinion of reputable posters over on TDIClub I'm going for the 10K on the factory fill, but I'll do an analysis at 5K to see how things are going. They make a good argument on leaving the factory fill in for that long.

I'm not planning on using the Castrol during the free maintenance period. I'll supply the oil and let the dealer do the labor. General opinions seem to be that the M1 ESP, Motul Specific 507, or Fuchs Titan GT1 507 are all probably better oils than the Castrol. Right now I'll probably use the Fuchs, but I've got plenty of time to make a choice. Opinion again is that either of those would be good for 10K, but I'll get an analysis to decide on OCI.

This question comes up all the time... and it's a question because it "questions" conventional wisdom on oil change intervals.

You will be just fine on the factory schedule. In fact, most vehicles in Europe are on an interval that is often longer than what we do here in the U.S.

I appreciate everyone's feedback. I am still trying to get up to speed, learning about the first diesel I have ever owned.

I would love to see someone's UOA of Castrol SLX on a 10k run in our Treg TDI's.

In 10k miles, I will take a sample, test and post.

VW UK offer long life servicing every 20,000 miles or 2 years , whichever comes first.

A lot of us stick to 10K / 1 year servicing and some of us who do very short daily commutes do an oil and filter change in between at 5K / 6 months.

SamTrooper, try giving them a call about Canadian shipping or I'd be happy to do it for you if a CN call is some sort of expensive international call.

On a side note I had my oil analyzed at 5500 with Dyson and the factory fill won't go 10K. I changed mine to the Fuchs and will test again at 10K when I have the dealer do the warranty change. I'll post the raw numbers on TDIClub and BITOG tomorrow.

I'm breaking mine in that way, although I've always belonged to the break it in like you want it to run camp.

Dyson includes about a 30 minute mp3 explaining all the numbers and his analysis is proprietary. Short version is I'm progressing well with break-in and the numbers reflect a new engine, but he thought the factory fill to be fairly depleted and soot levels were high enough to warrant not going 10K. OCIs in that range and longer don't trouble him, he just doesn't think this factory fill, whatever it is, is up to it.

I was thinking of putting in an order soon...if you guys want I can just order a bunch more then ship it out to you when I get it home. I don't want anything other than whatever the cost of product + border charges + actual shipping costs from Ottawa to wherever you are.

I was conversing with a Master mechanic at vw and he stated with frequent deep cold starts, city driving, and or dusty conditions, it's best not to let the OCI go beyond 8,000 km or 5k miles. With perfect hwy conditions no problems acheiving 15,000 km between intervals. This wasn't just a plug as he owns one himself and I was asking the interval he does. I believe the factory fill is 0w-40 Fuchs oil. Interestingly, on my oil cap there is a plug for castrol, as vw developed the SLX professional in cahoots with castrol or vice versa. But there have been similar partnerships with Fuchs and also Lubrimoly. I do find it interesting that it actually says castrol recommended right on my oil cap though.
