I'm back again with this problem car of mine.

I just replaced the starter on my 2015 3.0 TDI. The car cranked beautifully and ran great for a day, but then the next day it started to crank sluggishly and now won't crank at all and I'm getting the following two error codes:

5463 - Starter Control; Returned Message P3052 00 [167] - 50 Short to Plus
22944 - Shift Solenoid 2 P0977 00 [171] - Short to Plus

This is my first real car that I've done a lot of work on so I'm still figuring a lot of things and, especially when it comes to electrical.

Based on what I'm finding on Google, my theory is either a bad relay or a the grounding strap that goes from the starter/alternator to the frame is bad...but I don't know why I would be getting the shift solenoid short code as well.

edit Battery is good, was just replaced a couple of months ago and is always at about 12.6V when not running.

I forgot to update this post with my solution.

It turned out to be a bad connection on the main engine grounding lug. I'm kicking myself for it being so simple as I wasted a TON of time, effort, and worry on this. It looks like what happened was when I connected the grounding lug when I put in the engine, the edge of the lug was hung up just enough on the bolt to keep it from making a good connection which is why I was getting the intermittent starter issues followed by it suddenly not working. I pulled the lug off, reseated it, and tightened it up and the car started right up.

In other news, I have a new multimeter with some fancy leads, a starter tester switch, and I've gotten real good at pulling this alternator and starter off lol. Thank you very much for your input, fellas!

While I'm waiting on someone else to bring the relay tester back to O'Reily's for me to check out, do you guys have any suggestions for where I should start troubleshooting?

Sorry that took a few minutes, I'd never used that function on the scanner before, took me a minute to figure it out.

So the battery is pretty low, I've hooked it up the charger.

I've spent a lot of time out in the car with the electronics powered up (but obviously not running), could that have drained it so much? Or is something else going on?

I bought this car from Copart, so no warranty on it.

The engine was hydrolocked so it was written off as water damage, but other than the engine being seized up, there's no sign of anything having gotten wet, inside or outside the car.

Your new battery wasn't coded by the looks of it.
It's also quite low.
But you also have a short.

What charger are you using?
You should probably code the battery so the BEM knows it's dealing with a new battery.
Did you use the proper replacement, or some rado crap?

I'm using a NOCO Genius Pro 50 battery charger. Pretty gnarly charger, my sister got it for free off of Amazon Vine and gave it to me for a birthday present.

I'm pretty sure it's an Interstate battery but I'll have to double-check the brand name, I got it from Costco.

And I'll go code the battery right now.

I'm assuming I'll need to wait until the battery is charged before doing anything else?

The battery charger? It's in AGM mode.

The old battery was also AGM, but I've no information on the exact make and model.

The new battery is an Interstate MTX-95R/H9, one of their top AGM batteries.

And from what I've read, there's no issues replacing a flooded battery with AGM except in older cars. Is that not the truth?

If you had AGM originally, then I agree. Different specs for different regions and options. I have a starter battery post with lots of specifics if you want to get a feel for what I see.

Yeah I'd love to take a look, do you have a link to it? Btw, I read your post on aftermarket scan tools, lol now my newbie ass is all kinds of paranoid.

And random question about my Touareg. Could a banged up Terminal 50 cable connector (where it plugs on to the starter) potentially be the cause of my issue?

I ask because when I was trying to pull the old starter off, the clip on it was pretty banged up.

I can only assume whoever had the car before me and was trying to get the bad engine to run messed with the starter and dinged the clip.

Based off your codes and description, I'm going to say you have a poor ground, especially if the engine has been replaced. I would say the main ground cable/s for the engine weren't attached properly, or were damaged. Did you have similar issues with the original starter?

Additionally, since you already know that terminal 50 was damaged, do a voltage drop test on it.

Sorry, been away for the weekend helping my parents out.

The original starter was cranking sluggishly, and sometimes it wouldn't start until I jumped it with another car. That's why I suspected that the starter was bad. But I wasn't getting the error codes about the terminal 50 problem.

I will go out and double-check the grounding cables for the engine. I only remember seeing one.

It's definitely possible the replacement starter is faulty. What brand was it? New or remanufactured?
