hey all,

Had to get a job done on my 2.5 touareg the other day. Shims worn under camshaft. not sure why but either way have to fix it. Bought new camshaft, shims, bearings, new stretch bolts and all put together. Mechanic tells me he's no tool for setting the geared timing. Struggle to get it anywhere in Ireland so I guess I'll have to buy it. Question is did anyone but that VAG one off ebay (link below) and if so, does it work? Think I've the BLK model engine. There's another set with long pins in it and looks like a crankshaft locking tool. Is that needed to complete the job too or will the first kit do? Fairly stuck at this point. Really appreciated.

Oh and I should say that this is week 3 that she's off the road trying to sort this problem.

That's all you need to set the timing beside the procedure and some skill.
Its a wonder you cannot hire the tool some where over there ? I hired my when I did my cams.
What shims are you talking about?

yes. You need that set.

You MUST renew the diamond coated ring.

There is a very specific way of setting the timing.

See the attached documents - print them out and give them to the mechanic. If you do a procedure wrong on this engine it will cost you a lot of money to fix..... if it can be fixed.

I think he is referring to the lifters

PS : Make sure you only use 505.01 or 506.01 specification oil and change it every 10'000km.

yeah, those lifters or shims were meant to be the problem. excessive wear.

I always use the 506.01 oil but was servicing it at 16000km or 10000 miles like the on board computer says

Hey all,

Just an update to finish out the post. Good news is jeep running perfectly

Camshaft, shims, bearings, bolts, diamond coated washer all replaced. Mechanic said its not the first time he's seen premature wear on the camshaft. Camshaft badly scored and a couple of flat spots. Not too sure as to the cause. Service intervals maybe too far apart but the shaft being scored in a few spots makes me think oil starvation at some point.

I also purchased the tool in my above link. It worked but not without minor modifications and the crankshaft locking part of the tool got strained from the use of 1 job which shows the tools aren't great quality but will get you out of a hole.

Next step:

Possible oil flush & full service. Still pondering the oil flush, good or bad idea? not sure

It's not a bloody JEEP!

But well done on fixing your Touareg.

Now make sure you have read on up EXACTLY which engine oil to use to prevent premature camshaft lobe wear and/or boggering up your DPF if fitted.

Change the front and rear diff oil, transfer box oil [buy the right stuff in the 850ml pot from your VW dealer] and the ATF in the gearbox if an auto, or the gearbox oil if manual.

Only use 505.01 or 506.01 oil.

Change every 10'000km.

Don't flush. Do what I do. When your oil has drained, pour 250ml into the filler neck and 250ml into the oil filter area (filter out) and let it drain straight through. Only then put the sump bolt back and fill with 10 liters of oil. Yes 10 liters. The sump is more than big enough to take a little more oil than what the capacity says.
