Secrets of Touareg T3 - continuing tradition

There is 2009 thread recently resurfaced – about not so obvious features and hidden goodies of the T1 and T2. I’ve found this thread very interesting.

Since T3 secrets were not a subject covered by this thread, I thought this will be a good idea to start talking about T3 cool things which do exist but not so obvious to every 2011+ Touareg's driver. Thus, given a due respect to the original thread without risking to be accused in plagiarism, I’ll start…

I am very familiar with the vehicle (I did RTFM scrupulously, though might not have everything memorized to a “t”), but after a two months of ownership - surprisingly - I have discovered small storage compartments under front seats. Bummer, how could I not see them for two months?

My Touareg lives outdoors between April and November – her slot in the garage is taken by my fishing boat. So, morning dew present on windows and mirrors is a common thing at a time I drive to work. I’ve learned that if ambient temperatures are above 68F, mirror heaters WILL NOT work (my first thought was that heaters malfunctioned and dealer visit needs to be scheduled). The "RTFM again" approach did help avoiding making me fool at the dealer…

What have you discovered?

P.S. Please note, "F" in RTFM stands for Fahrvergnügen, and not for what you might be thinking about!:D

That's odd. Mine will go right back to where it was and continue the shuffle. I use my iPhone 4S for music, and just use the bluetooth streaming.
I'm using the adapter in the car with an iPod. It doesn't have Bluetooth so I use the cable. It's unfortunate it basically takes over the iPod and doesn't offer the compatibility that using the hd or a card, like album art.

Unfortunately, album art does not show from any iOS device, via cable or Bluetooth. Hopefully a software update will fix it...but I don't expect an update...would be welcome...just don't expect it.

Electronic Parking Brake Release

I saw this on MyTreg.com.

If you have set (engaged) the electronic parking brake and then put the Touareg into "drive", the parking brake will release when you press on the accelerator peddle, and you'll start driving away. I've tried this and it works. I'm not sure if the same is true for reverse.

The manuals description of the functions of the park brake are really obtuse. Just check the park brake light on the mfd: When in gear, if it's red, you need to release the brake, if its green just put your foot on the go pedal, if there is nothing there, and you take your foot off the brake, it will go.
I have found no practical use for Hold Assist, and don't use it:)
Now I am off to rummage around under the front seats looking for these little compartments:)

Album art works fine with SD cards on the RNS-850. All of my music goes through iTunes and I would say at least 97% of it has album artwork embedded. I'm pretty sure it's not an Apple thing since my friend put in a Pioneer in his Audi and album artwork shows from his iPod/iPhone.

The 2009 T1-T2 Secrets thread has just resurfaced again. The T3 secrets discoveries look to be dormant. Are there no secrets to share about new generation Touareg? This must be the Niner’s formula working – everyone’s diligently using his famous RTFM recommendation!

There was a thread with pictures of a carpet plastic-framed opening in a front of a driver seat from which I’ve learned that additional battery output pins are hidden under. I had no clue about that until it was posted. I’ve extrapolated 2009 thread results on my 2012 TDI and bought VW red box with warning triangle to fill in rear gate empty slot. I’ve started using original VW windshield washer fluid last summer because it has rain repellant coating component added, helps eliminate wiper blades squeaking and does clean windshield better than anything I’ve tried before. There were more tricks discovered by other CT members, but I cannot recall them all.

Can't get that to work on mine, wish I could.
If I press and hold the unlock on the key fob then all the windows drop and the roof opens the rear small gap (tilt) nothing more - wish the roof opened all the way, that would be perfect on a hot 35deg day...

Cruise control stalk: on my '11, for 3 years, I'd leave the house and hit cruise at 45-50mph before hitting the highway. On the ramp, I'd pop the stalk up ~4-5 times to get it up to 65-70mph highway cruising speed.

Just figured out on a long trip last weekend all I needed do is push the little button on the end of the stalk to go straight to "current" speed. Or maybe I should've RTFM better!

Cool stuff:
-Rear seats move back and forth, and also back angle is adjustable
-Drawers in front of front seats just fit an umbrella
-Mirrors fold in automatically on lock (set thru the car menu)
-Clip on trunk floor clips to cargo cover to keep trunk floor up when accessing spare/adding adblue

VCDS stuff
-Foglights and highbeams on at same time
-Eliminate foglight as sidelight function
-Auto close/open sunroof cover on lock/unlock
-Display gear in MFD

Just discovered that the armrest slides forward when you press the release tab. So, if you press the release tab as if you were going to lift the armrest, but instead of lifting it, slide it forward. It then covers the cup holders...
Not sure why this is needed, but I discovered it by accident, thought I broke it at first....

Hah! I've only had the Touareg for a few months, but had no idea this was there. I get aggravated when bags fall over and everything rolls out.

Also another one, if you take a corner fast enough, even in "D", the transmission will down shift to the appropriate gear for the speed to keep the rev around 4k for an expect acceleration. You don't have to push the kick-down button. The car will do this on its own. Probably an algorithm from speed, steering angle, roll, and throttle position. Don't know if this is true for other brands, my automatic experience is limited.

My 2012 needs to be in '1'. While at a standstill, I tried to move from '1' to '2' but it was a no-go.

My 2012 ROW TDI allows selection of M2 at rest, both from gear selector and paddle shift.

What's more, when using tiptronic and slowing down, my Treg will drop down gears as the speed decreases, and when I come to a complete standstill will remain in M2.

But I have no idea why mine does whereas yours (and others') does not; possible reasons might be:
1. Different VCDS coding for different markets?
2. Different VCDS coding for 4XMotion
3. This is the way my Treg has adapted to my driving style?

My 2012 does the same - "1" only.

By the way, how come that shifting right away to the second gear in tiptronic helps to start going in the snow? The faster the wheels will be spinning, the slipperier (is this a word?) it will be be. Am I wrong? I though the only benefit might be that one may achieve squealing sound of tires which I was sooo very fond of when I was 18.

The reason shifting into second helps is because second gear is taller than first, so the car will accelerate at a slower rate. The slower rate of acceleration means less tire spinning. Think of it like trying to accelerate on the highway in the highest gear, the car doesn't accelerate very quickly.
