Ross Tech vs OBDeleven

Hi everyone,
I'm new to Club Touareg as I've only just purchased a 2015 V8 TDI R-Line and this is my first post. I'm wondering what peoples thoughts are on purchasing either a Ross Tech or OBDeleven for general maintenance, fault finding and clearing. I might even have a look at the dreaded RNS-850 green screen.
My vehicle is in pristine condition and has no faults, so this is something for future use and not a necessity right now.
Thanks in advance.....

Go genuine Ross Tech. You might even find a used one on the forum (I did). A very valuable diagnostic tool, and great for a few "tweaks". Genuine Ross Tech will also get you access to support and their forums. Plus, you can turn around and sell it later if you decide you don't need it.

I checked out upgrading a while ago, and you are better off buying a new one and selling your existing HEX-USB+CAN privately. Upgrading via Ross Tech's web site looks like a rip off.

On a separate note: I have an original HEX-USB+CAN cable (unlimited VINs) and have noticed that recent versions of VCDS (from v18.2) are outputting "[New feature! Extended UDS fault detail is only supported by current gen. interfaces]" for some control modules.

Has anyone gone from using the older HEX-USB+CAN (on T3s) to the newer HEX-V2 or HEX-NET and determined if there is a benefit in purchasing one of these new devices?

Do you just get details of errors that you couldn't get access to with older versions of VCDS?

Or has Ross-Tech crippled the error outputting functionality on newer versions of VCDS, from 18.2 onwards (if you are using the older HEX-USB+CAN cable)?

. On another side note, how do you work out what "T" type your vechicle is? (eg nm2003 has a T3)

Just order a new HEX-V2 Ross Tech cable.

I just ordered a HEX-V2 (10 vin) cable.

Should be arriving in a week.

Will be interesting to see what benefits the new HEX-V2 will give me over the older HEX-CAN-USB cable.

BTW: once the new cable comes in, I will be looking to sell the older one.

Anyone interested in purchasing the older one, please PM me.

PS. The older one is a genuine Ross-Tech (Unlimited VIN) cable in great working order.

I may be wrong, but if the OP is considering an OBDeleven, then he is most likely not going to spend up for a Ross-Tech cable.

I will wait until I get the new unit and do some comparison scans before putting on here (in the classified section on this forum) to sell the older one.

PS. The HEX-CAN-USB VIN unlimited cables have been selling for good dollars, so shouldn't have an issue selling, when I am ready.

Mine was purchased in 2015 so is very new compared to some older ones that have been put up previously.

Hi folks, I've just got myself an R50 2009 replacing my 2014 TDi V6. I also have my son's R32 and wife's 2011 Golf 2.0 TDi, all fantastic cars and am considering either obdeleven or Ross Tech HEX-NET. I also have the constraint (benefit) of having nothing but Apple MacBooks, iPhones, iPads in the house, no Windows machines anywhere near. My area of interest is doing home DIY servicing, service resetting, fault diagnosis (if I get any) and occasional changes to alter things how they behave (nothing major). Things like maybe indicator flick count and things I don't even know exist at this point.

My inclination is the HEX-NET (Enthusiast 10 VIN) unit to cover the Apple side off but also if I do happen upon on Windows machine I can still do it that way with installed software.

The obdeleven route looks cheaper but for a learner I've read that it is difficult to pick up the coding side (i don't even know what an adaptation is or means sorry). But I'm sure amongst you guys out there there is enough experience with each to give me some guidance to help me with this decision.

I also have a neighbor with a Bentley Continental GTC with occasional similar needs.

Let me know what you think please if you have a moment.

TIA

Pete.

Are you sure that you can do this with HEX-V2 enthusiast? I see on their website "Windows running inside a Virtual Machine (for example on a Mac) is not supported."
Can anyone please clarify that for me? I only have Apple products currently. Do I need to purchase the Hex-Net to be able to use it on an apple iPad or iPhone? Still couldn't get hex net on my mac book pro?

Both equally good, coding isnt that complex as it appears.
Go with your budget

For 2015 7p it’s useless, they are still working on it.
No changes can be made. Sticking
to vcds for now

I have made many coding changes on my '16 7p Touareg with my month-old OBDEleven. I was out of licenses on my VCDS cable, and decided to give the competition a try. Sadly, it's in limbo right now, and wont communicate with ANY of the older cars on a new style dongle. I have compained. They are working on migrating for apple support. SUPPOSEDLY, the update to correct all of that will be out yesterday....

That means they can't guarantee it works and won't help you troubleshoot it if you can't get it working. That's just a disclaimer for them to wash their hands telling you that you're on your own to get it working--it's not saying it won't work.

The Hex-V2 won't work with iPhones or iPads. You would need a Hex-Net to use it with iPhones or iPads. Hex-V2 will work with Windows inside of a VM (I use Win10 w/ Parallels).

Yes, Parallels does work with Catalina. I'm currently on 10.15.3. If you don't have Parallels, you don't have to buy it. It will work with VM Virtualbox, as well.

I currently use a Hex-Net, but the V2 is the same thing as the Net albeit corded and with a web app.
I used an unlimited version before I bought the Hex-Net.

I will run it on Android and see if it's any better
