My MFD is acting up. When the car has been sitting a while and is first started, the display is nice and bright and you can read everything very clearly. After about 10-15 mins It starts to fade away to the point you can read anything. The display is still somewhat lit up but you can see anything.
I have found several clusters on flea-bay and was wondering if I could just swap the cluster out with out any issues?? I know the odometer will be wrong but I can have that corrected by someone with a Vag-com correct??

I have the red display..my touareg is an 06, would it matter if the cluster was from an 04,05 as long as it had the same engine??

. But the keys have to be reprogrammed for the immobilizer.
No key reprogramming required for the Touareg..the immobilizer function is in the kessy module which is separate from the instrument cluster unlike on other VWs.

Not applicable here, but if you ever swap out a cluster in a Golf 5or Jetta (1K) download a software package with little on scruples written by people who are oblivious to security, call VAG Kommander. This far east Asian product, allows you to copy the exisitng dashboard configuration off to a binary file and then write it into an alternate replacement unit. Thereby cloning the original, as a result, you avoid reprogramming keys etc. It also have a very elegant feature call "Odometer Error Correction Function" , a tool one must have..

No, I don't have a copy, ...eerr, a friend told me, ,,,it belongs to a mate, just as I told the officer!!

every touareg has kessy. don't confuse keyless entry and kessy. all have kessy, only some have kessy which has keyless entry capability

the primary function of kessy is the immobilizer function.

So all to say, the immobilizer lives in the kessy box not in the cluster

Oh you're right, keys don't have to be reprogrammed in a Touareg during an instrument cluster swap. The keys in my Golf had to be reprogrammed, not the Touareg ;-)

Touareg has an entry and start authorisation control unit ( J518 ) , it isn't called kessy... (kessy is a name for keyless entry system from volkswagen)
So an instrument cluster swap is not a big problem.

If I was to swap the red MFD out and put in a cluster that has the color MFD, would it work until I was able to order or find someone with avag-com?
I understand there would most likely be error lights until cleared using vag-com but would it work in the mean time?
I'm asking because now my red mfd is totally out and I have the opportunity to get a color cluster for $150.
I wont be getting my vag-com stuff for at least 2 weeks.
