Polished my exhaust

I've been wanting to polish my exhaust for awhile but wasn't 100% sure on how to approach it.

I tackled it this weekend and it came out nice. Did not take as long as I thought it would. Used some fine steel wool with mothers polish, then I used Eagle One Wadding Polish and finished off with a hard microfiber polish.

It looks great in my opinion...poor mans exhaust lol

Look what you've started, a world wide polishing fest.
My wife just rang and asked what i was doing, "Polishing my exhaust" i said, " Not in front of the neighbours?" was her response..

Done, looks better than the crud crap on it before..

I did that on some of my snowmobile parts! It didn't last long..a few days but that was in the snow. After that it seemed to oxidize quicker:(

Painted Mine

With inspiration from this thread, I decided to do something about my ugly exhaust. In fear that polishing would eventually turn it ugly again, I decided to paint it instead. I think it looks really good and it makes it more unnoticeable. And most of all, THAT UGLY STAIN ISN'T THERE ANYMORE!! :D I look forward to seeing whether the polish or paint will last longer. Thanks atxtouareg & Tooraktractor

Yeh, painting it is my 'B' plan, will see how it goes, maybe a quick coat of clear might help me.

What I find odd on here is that I have never had to buff my oem suitcase muffler, even with our salty winters! I'll give it an occasional wipe down when washing it but that's about it. Is it possible that later model 2005 ones had a different finish on the muffler? I'd be more than happy to take a pic of it, it's now sitting on my garage floor. It really looks mint and it has been through many winters, and never buffed at all.

Here it is, I just snapped it literally 5 minutes ago. Sitting next to my bro's winter tires in my garage. As you can see, it looks in excellent condition, nice and clean, albeit with dust, and with a bit of shine on it. This puppy has never been buffed ever and I need not explain our horrid winter conditions. The black little spots you see are paint overspray when I repainted my trailer hitch(yes I got lazy and didn't cover the muffler with paper..). Other than the dust on it, it is what it is.

I can't help but notice that mine almost feels like it has some sort of finish on it.....I might be wrong but it's making me go hmmmmmmm right now.

BTW, this thing is really heavy! Unbelievable really.

LOtouareg I forgot to take a pic of the top side ("dark side of the moon")of the suitcase muffler, that never sees the light of day. Other than it being dirty, it has not oxidized, although it is duller in finish since everything has set in over time. Nevertheless, nothing remotely close to your "before" pic.

FWIW, I recall these mufflers being on warehouse discount by VW about a year ago, they were being sold a dime a dozen, but the sale was very short lived. I almost ordered one, but as you can see by my pic, what was the point :), although I opted for an aftermarket sport one in the end instead.

Well as I mentioned before, I have a sport aftermarket exhaust on now. It's not like I'm hurting for cash either, and my thinking is, sooner or later, we all sell or trade in for newer cars. This OEM suitcase muffler I have sitting on the side, might help close a deal, should I happen to sell my Touareg to someone who doesn't care about better sound, weight savings, and a couple more ponies, and simply wants minimal NVH as the factory intended to appease this market segment.
