My MY16 R-Line will be hitting 3 years old in a few months and I thought I would book into Pedders (in Burwood) to get their $28 brake, steering and suspension check done tomorrow morning.

It takes 1-2hrs to perform, and includes a full written report (so it appears to be very thorough and is independent) compared to the quick glance that the VW service guys would do.

Has anyone had this test done before and is their replacement equipment (ie. brakes, suspension etc) any good?

The link to their page is below:

PS. I expect they will report that my brakes are low (which they are) and need replacing (which I already know need replacing), but I don't expect anything else to be reported.

Have not taken my Touareg to Pedders but have been with previous cars. Very happy with their service at the time, they seemed competent and totally honest. They helped resolve a disagreement I had with a dealer at the time. If I had suspension issues, I would definitely consider using them again. They are very good with their diagnostic check list to help identify potential problems.

For brakes, I went to ABS previously.

Took the Touareg in today to Pedders.

Other than the brake pads and rotors, everything passed okay.

They recommended their Kevlar ceramic brake pads and slotted rotors (front and rear).

Interestingly, the parts were priced at just under $1200 and labour was $1300, total $2500.

$1300 for labour sounds just a bit rich even for my bank balance, when I can get replacement OEM fitted for around $1200.

Are Pedders taking the piss on the labour quoted? Or do they charge based on the cost of the car coming into the shop.

I should have taken off my luxury watch (and gold chains) before going into the store.:surprise:

4Any good workshop can do your brakes.

And probably a lot cheaper than you have been quoted.

Is the brake pad wear light on?

If not then wait until it is and check which end, front or rear or both, actually need doing You will still have at least 2,000 miles to get it booked in.

Slotted discs are bad news in you venture into mud - way too easy to score the pads badly due to trapped stones in the slots.

Will be waiting until light comes on (haven't yet).

I went in there mainly to get suspension and drivetrain independently checked (which all passed).

I knew about condition with front brake wear.

Will be looking for OEM brakes pads and rotors once brake light comes on.

BTW, I have uploaded the results of the suspension and brake test they did on my vehicle, for reference.

NOTE: I did notice the weight on the front right was nearly 200kg more than left side. Not sure if this is an issue with their equipment or normal on V8 TDis.

Those fancy racer parts are going to be expensive.

Don't they have any slum dwelling OEM style brake parts available?

How many Kms have you got now NM.
I am still running the factory set with about 30000kms. I intend to replace after light comes on, with selected parts from OS. I like pagid/zimmerman combo.
Am generally not hard on brakes

Hi Singh, which OS site do you get your brakes from?

I saw some overseas sites (a while ago via google), but they only had V6 version, not V8 TDi (and wasn't sure which ones to get for mine).

Do you have the model numbers for parts for our V8 TDi vehicle?

BTW, is it cost savings that you get your brakes OS or is it lack of availability of brands here (and then pay mechanic $250 odd to put them on your car)?

Btw, its cost me about $250 to get all rotors/ pads changed from a good brake shop- twice on the v10 in 13yrs and 200,000kms.
Mostly long range outback trips and short off-road low range adventures

Hi Singh,

I have 40k on the odometer.

Will be looking to replace with OEM pads and rotors. Don't do any track days.>:)

Have been waiting for warning lights to come on.

I have loud squealing when braking, which is annoying, but have been living with it for the last 2 years. Turning the radio up masks all noises (even the nagging wife).

I can continue living with both for another another few months.0:)

The guys at Continental Tyres (in Mitcham) quoted me $1250 for ATE front and rear pads and rotors.

Based on what you paid for just your front set, their price is pretty good.

The question is are ATE OEM brake parts any good?
