It's been done before. I've seen pictures here, and the guy shared his experience. You'll need to dig a little and you'll find it.

Another guy used regular metal polish to have it shined. That's what I'll be using.

I was going to polish mine - still up in the air about it. Painting it would make it look very clean and sleek (except I have the OEM trailer hitch which isn't very attractive on the rear end to begin with!)

 

Steel wool and Barkeeper's Friend should remove the discoloration.

I actually have Barkeeper's friend lying around my garage somewhere. Believe it or not, I don't know if my exhaust suffers from the discoloration issue. My Touareg is back in the States - I'm currently working in London, but I'll be home in a week or so so I am planning out a list of things to do - maintainance and mods

 

I have the same issue with my Treg. Barkeeper's Friend is the only thing that works, and it works like magic. Best $6 I ever spent. I have to clean my muffler with BKF about once a year.

 

I too have the discoloration. Anyone have any ideas as to why it seems to only happen on the one side. Makes me curious???

 

It's happens on the V6 because there is only one exhaust line --- driver's side --- that goes into the giant can in the back. The V8 has two lines going into it.

One person has a second pipe added and the discoloration went away.

 

just polish it with bar keepers or neverdull i do it twice a year exhaust looks like new

 

So after doing some research, I'm going to just paint my exhaust a flat black with some high temp paint.

My car is Black and I think it would just make the back end look a bit cleaner...I'll be getting around to doing it in about a week or so when I'm back in NY. I'll put up pics of the process and finished product.

 

Any updates on this matter? I'm curious as to how it would look painted black.

 

i just followed on the barkeepers advice and WOW what a difference, little water, little barkeepers and one of those little metallic sponges to clean the pots and pans in the kitchen, half an hour later i have a brand new exhaust.

 

Must have changed it for 2008,I have two pipes going to the large muffler.

 

Painted looks best IMO. Along with the big oval tips.

 

Speaking of painting, I was considering painting the exhaust tips of my V10 to all black... They are beginning to get corroded, and I wonder how it would look as well... What I'm afraid of is, it may look even worse over time if the paint starts to chip/peel/fade...

One question: The luggage muffler that we all have, isn't that thing painted silver? Or is it Stainless just like the exhaust tubes that feed it?

 

I'm pretty sure it's stainless. When I took mine off for the propshaft replacement, it looked like stainless to me.

Use a magnet to check... Quick and easy.
