Once Again: Parking Heater for V10 TDI

Ive read TONS on this.

most of us know that the V10s came from the factory with the Webasto ThermoTop C Aux Heater already intsalled in our cars. it is used as an augmentation heater to help bring engine temps up faster when the outside temp is less than 40F. In Europe, owners of our cars also have access to the standheizung function of this cute little diesel fired boiler.
VAG has not let us immature, selfish Americans access to this "grown up" feature in NA.

reading and researching, it sounds like some folks have had marginal success in "hacking" this to work in NA cars. here is my best understanding of what it takes.

1. install a german circuit board same as Phaeton's into the Webasto.
2. Buy the rooftop timer controller and put it in place of the compass.
3. Imitate the isolation valve with a light bulb or relay to keep the heater happy.
4. perhaps some recoding of the aux heater contorller if it even lets you.

this only allows the timer to control the heater and sometimes it fails.

i havent read where anyone has got the T90, T91, or GSM remote to work at all.

the big question: is there a way to code certain controllers to just "believe" the dam* car is ROW and let us install the T90 telestart remote??? I could care less about the timer, because I park it the garage anyway.

this may be a nasty thread to start up again, but Im willing to also do research and dig into my own car to solve this. its cool (in a warm way) and totally worth it.

thanks... J

when you do a scan, what is the part number of the aux heater?
this is mine:
Tuesday,03,August,2010,18:45:21:01168
VCDS Version: Release 10.6.0
Address 18: Aux. Heat
Control Module Part Number: 7L6 819 008 B
Component and/or Version: Standheizung E1MAC 0235
Software Coding: 0000030
Work Shop Code: WSC 31414
Flash Status
Programming Attempts: 0
Successful Attempts: 0
Programming Status: 00000000
Required Conditions: 00000000
Software
P0102
Misc.
VCDS Info:
Labels: None

it seems like the only ones that work have part number 7L6 819 008 x.
and is coded either 0000000 or 0000100.

lets keep this rolling until there is a "easy" solution.

also, VCDS will not allow me to recode my heater module.
does anyone have the access code to make the changes?

thanks again,
J

nice. Ill do my best to round up some "other forum" folks and summarize existing solutions.

if anyone has contacts in Germany, maybe they could start asking around to determine if there is a "software fix" for this. meaning I would prefer to just tell the car to make it available and install the T91 telestart.

if anyone's already tried this with 7L6 819 008 B, please let us know how to make it work..

thanks for keeping the interest level high.

blownvette, anxiously awaiting your results with the timer....

sent a PM to vortex member monsterturbo, after piles of searching, he has the most info.

if the timer works with the 008 board and dummy load, then I think the t91 remote can be added very easily, without screwing with the roof harness. Im verifying with Webasto at this time that it will work.

#12 ·
when you say "swap the controller" you mean the compass unit in the roof console, right?

or did you end up changing the circuit board inside the Webasto heater?

thanks.

#14 ·
so VCDS allowed you to change the code after the timer was found?

I cant change my code right now, thats why Im asking.

were you always able to change the coding for the heater?
thanks.

Blownvette, What is your cost on parts at this point? Is the the factory timer you are talking about or a webasto equivalent?

#20 ·
yes, please post all the necessary information so that the rest of us can do this......the exact parts, prices, PDF's of hard to find instructions, etc. i may not get to it for a while, but i think it's definitely something i'll need to do living in the northern rockies.

"Are you using a REAL VCDS cable?"

Yes. bought it direct from Rosstech.
nice catch on the timer. thats a killer price. I have a bud in Germany, I think Ill hit him up for the same thing. fingers crossed.

Blownvette,

jeez that sounded easy. so in total, all you did was plug in the timer/compass and code your heater to 000020?

and not getting a trouble code for the valve?

Here my info from my scan when I picked up the beast on Friday.

Address 18: Aux. Heat Labels: Redir Fail!
Part No: 7L6 815 071 D
Component: Standheizung E1MAC
Coding: 0000100
Shop #: WSC 31414 000 00000
VCID: 33780CF82B47

No fault code found.

Looking forward to more info!

Also Not sure why the heat labels say redir fail: This is on a 2007 V10
Maybe I direct scan of the unit instead of a whole car scan would help.

OK digging into this a lot more, and have a contact in Germany I am working with.

Does anyone have a euro wiring diagram for the aux heater module?

I need to find out if the remote control unit is can-bus like the overhead timer module or is a direct wire option.

Thanks!!

PS I REAAAAAAALLY want to get the remote module working.

Thanks

A couple of interesting reads from the vw vortex forum on the parking heater on the Phaeton.

Looks like we've been missing an adaptation that is needed...
channel 9 needs to be coded to 2 ours is most likely a 0.

I will try this tomorrow

1st thread:
VWVortex.com - Parking heater in diesel powered Phaetons

Latest thread:
VWVortex.com - Add to FAQ: On the aux heater subject........

I am going to order a T100 from my german friend who can get us a group buy going if this works.
The T100 can set a timer on the fly, has confirmation on heater fireup, displays interior temps, etc. He can also supply us with the T91 which is like the VW T90 which has on and off.

I may need help sourcing the euro aux control module if that is needed. I'm going to try it without first.

Wish me luck everyone!

*Update* OK I tried changing the adaptation channel #9 from our default of 1 to a 2 and it reverts back to 1. I then changed it to 0 and then tried a 2 and again it went back to a 1. So this sounds like I will need to get the euro aux heater module as well.
Can anyone help? I'd love to add it to my shipment of the T100 coming from Germany.

ya I wasn't able to do the phaeton trick either.

I'm just trying to get a good price on the T91 right now also from a contact in germany who has a webasto friend... no answer yet.
Ill hook it up and see if it works. On the droid rite now or id send the pdf on howto.
I wish you luck. I know the t91 works with the right board.... getting the numbers o n that board and buying it is a real pain.... more to come

Thanks haywood, The T91/ T100 both seem to have the same wiring as the pdf that I have lists them both. The only difference is functionality.

I doubt that our current boards will work as a parking heater (well mine at least) but I guess an easy test would be to send it the correct signal on pin 1 and see what happens. I'm guessing that it is a 12v positive input on pin 1 but am trying to confirm.

The board on the 2004 works with the timer and coding change. I would GUESS if a remote, antenna and receiver were added the board would also work with the remote. I used the park heater (I did the timer and code chage) for the first time on Sunday and the remote would really be nice for the way I use the truck.

After more research it seems that the T90 may be the only way to go for a remote unit. I am going to order one and post up the results.

On an interesting note here are the self study guides on the heater for the phaeton
http://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f...ms/f73/vw-self-study-programs-v10-tdi-v6-tdi-edc16-more-45499-3.html#post238413

And in follow up to the 12v signal on pin 1 it is actually a communication signal from the remote to the control board via w-bus aka webasto bus line of communications
