No Low or High beams

Hi all,

I have been searching both this site along with the web for answers, but have not found the fix. Here is my issue:

I had a passenger bulb that would go out from time to time and a driver side bulb that looking like it was virbating. I decided to replace both bulbs so that I can keep the color match the same (HID bulbs).

Things worked good for a few days. The passenger side started to go off again! A few days later i was getting out of my car and the headlights left on sound was coming from the car when exiting. What was weird was my headlights were off!! Finally after messing with the key and headlight switch I got the headlight reminder noise off.

Now I have not low or high beams!! I have checked the fuses, tapped on the headlights, checked the connections, etc.

What the hell should I do next??

Side note the light indicator on my cluster would come on when I had headlight failure.

Hope someone has an answer!!

Thanks,

John

I have the exact same issue as you have. I also exchanged the HID bulbs with some I bought at eBay, and they worked great initially. Then the one side failed, but it wasn't the bulb or the connection (swapped bulb, blinker etc still work) two days the other side failed. Pls keep me posted what you find out, I have the extended warrenty but am worried that the dealer will argue that I didn't use original parts.

Thanks!!!

It's the "control board".

Update: I brought it to the dealer, they tested it: Both "control boards" are out, $500 each. The insurance I have pays for it (thank god, entire bill would have been about $2k!), it's the VW Platinum through Fidelity. Hope you got the same!

As a side note, they even had an inspector from the insurance come out to check that this was really the cause and they were not just making stuff up to make money. Apparently, my aftermarket light bulbs did not offend him.

Good luck!!!

Insurane? Wait, don't you mean Warranty? Or is it a warranty through an insurance company? I am confused.

Blacklightning, here is what you do: Go on eBay, but a pair of OEM bulbs (I bought OSRAM SYLVANIA XENARC D1S HID XENON OEM BULB 3200 LUMEN from Formula-J87). Shipped out of California, ordered Sat noon, was here Mon morning (then again, I am in Cali). Anyway, you put these bulbs in and hopefully your lights come on for a bit so they look used. Then you go to the dealer and have them replace it. My dealer now claims that the aftermarket bulbs draw too much current and that this fries the control board after a third control board blew threw when I wanted to pick up the car. Hard to prove/disprove, easier to do it this way so there is no discussion. Where did you order your aftermarket bulbs? Curious if you got the same as I have.
Let me know, I'll keep you posted, too. Cheers!!

my v10 is with the dealer, dynamic lights stopped working..headlights turn on okay but dont turn and the static side lights dont come on ....they have changed just about every control board, circuit, etc but still cant get it to work....VW at Germany have been contacted as the dealer and local VW office have tried every trick in the book.....

I got mine from the coverfactory. I will for sure ask them to remove eBay listings for Touaregs and for my money back if this is indeed the issue. I may post a photo of the type stamp here so we can compare if they are the same and just from a different distributor. Btw, the OEM bulbs set me back $153.28 (incl. tax), just so you have a frame of reference.

This sounds so familiar, has anyone checked the wiring harness inside the headlight? My Problem started with the right turning signal. The fuse would blow I would replace. After about the fifth time I noticed this only happed in a 45 degree turn or greater... started to think it could be a short caused by body flex. Pulled out and opened up the complete head light; as soon as I removed the rubber seals I noticed they were coated with little flakes of insulation. Upon further inspection I found all insulation was brittle and the slightest movement caused more bare wire to be exposed. I replaced every wire back to the main connector. I had other head light problems... I think every light blew a least one fuse until I completed this rewire. This was six months ago and the problem has not returned.

I started not to mention this but I think this problem cost me a battery too... was jumping once a week so replaced it. I kept the old one and just for curiosity put it back in. It is still in and I now have a extra battery.

I get the same clicking sound once-in-a-while. It's crazy, not there for the longest time, then all of a sudden constantly. Mainly on the freeway, it seems. I don't think it's related.

Btw, the dealer checked my wiring harness and said that wasn't the problem. Doesn't mean anything (especially not for you), of course, but thought I just mention it.

so i'm not the only one with this clicking sound around the steering column....does this have anything to do with the dynamic lights??

I noticed you were on... thought I would past the codes from my VCID before the rewire. Notice even though the shorts originated on the right they affected both sides. In my case I knew it wasn't the right as I had the dealer replace it on my extended warranty. He failed to mention this wasn't the first time he had seen multiple shorts. He also wanted to drag this out and replace everything except the head light. This all stopped when I purchased my own VCID from Ross Tech. and showed him the following.

By the way I looked up the definition of "Intermittent" in German. Roughly translated it means... have I drove you crazy yet? lol

South Florida. I have owned a 62 and then a 72 beetle. One got me through school the other flight training. I am now a retired airline pilot with a Touareg. The first one I saw was actually on the A5 between Darmstadt and Heidelberg in the left and going faster than my train...I flew home and started shopping. What I am saying in all this is... you are your best mechanic. You can buy a VCDS for less than you have already spent. If you can't repair the code yourself at least the dealer can't lead you down any rabbit holes. The VCDS should be ordered with your VIN. If you ck your owner’s manual it tells you how to remove the Headlight unit. Just pull off the covers release the retaining clip and unplug the bulbs. If you don't know how have a trusted mechanic show you how to test with a 12V power supply. Order online and replace as needed. If someone insists you disconnect the battery just know I didn't. Why? Because the lighting is not chassis wired to ground and a short is unlikely. If I am working on electric circuits I'm not sure of I pull the fuses for those circuits ... see owner’s manual. If you choose to disconnect the battery; which is VW recommended you can place a trickle charger on the jumper post and you won't lose the computer memory. How did I obtain this knowledge? The owner’s manual and this forum. Reminds me of the days we would pull the 62's engine and disassemble it on the kitchen table to see how it all worked. Wife wouldn't go for it these days, but now we have computers.

This thread may become the longest on the site if we continue at this rate! I got mine back yesterday, lights with new OEM bulbs (saved $280 by buying myself) and the 3rd control panel now work again. All covered under ext warranty. I'll be back on here if the go out again. Btw, if anyone needs a translation from German (intermittent was correct), let me know :).

Hi Laggyband,
nope. they fixed it(replaced both modules) and it all worked for a while and now back to the same thing - headlights light up but dont turn.
in my case the headlight mounts need to be changed, i can see one is broken and is held by a cable tie!...instead of replacing the mount the dealer put a cable tie and pushed the headlight back....
these mounts and headlight locking mechanism is pretty fragile..pull your lights out and have a look

Cheers Singh, i will have a look tomorrow, can you see it without removing anything, i have not had a look at it yet.

I have looked at the assembly, is the bracket at the bottom highlighted here the one which fails?
