Hello fellow Treg owners. What is it about Tregs that make people lose their minds? (read on):D
Recently, I spent a few months driving and evaluating a suitable replacement for my tried and trusted '00 Pathfinder LE. At 100K (kms), it was time to set her free and buy something with some warranty and a bit more active safety features. I live in the country and winters can be sketchy, AWD and traction control were must-haves, as well as some form of stability control. I spent every evening online. Looking up user ratings and evaluating cars. I was adament about buying a car with excellent reliability as that is what I was used to with Nissan. At some point I looked up the Treg on JD Power and was instantly turned off by the reviews and quickly eliminated it from my search. I began with Volvo, looking closely at the XC70 and XC90. Reviews were so-so, but I liked them alot, especially the XC70. In fact we liked the Volvo's so much, my wife bought a XC90 to replace her 2000 BMW 323i (worst reliability we ever owned). I found a XC70 that i wanted but it got sold out from under me while I was in negotiations with the dealer. I couldn't find another suitable one so I started looking at other makes while I waited for the right XC70 to pop up. Amongst the '04 candidates were Lexus RX330, Acura MDX, Passat W8 wagon w/4motion (wow!), Audi A4 Avant etc. Of those, the W8 impressed me the most but my wife hated the car. Next we went to a VW dealer to check out a Audi A4 Avant they had on the lot. The car was OK, but right next to it was a Treg, with 60K on it, CPO, Offroad Grey with Teak leather. I had to try it.... despite the little voice in my head yelling "JD Powers!!!". Well, this Treg not only impressed me, but it took over the side of my brain that makes the rational decisions, and relayed all thoughts to the emotional side of my brain. I bought it that night, while the goose bumps were still fresh in my arms. I was utterly blown away by this vehicle... the split personality of refined elegance, and torquey V8 power just appealed to me and my wife.

Now, I know what you guys are thinking... "oh no another '04 saga about to begin". I hope not. But after reading this forum for the last few days, I'm prepared for the worst. I did get all the service history on the car, it had been fully serviced and maintained at a local VW, with 5 trips to the dealership for small warranty items including the tranny "hard shift" issue. The car will be delivered with new winter tires (installed) and new summer tires with TPMS. It will have the full 64K (kms) big service done, and includes CPO and an additional extended warranty for a total of 5yrs and 70,000kms (I drive about 10K/yr.) starting after Sept '08 factory warranty. I feel really good about the condition, history and warranty coverage. Vin is #62xxx. I pick it up tomorrow night :D

So come on guys, throw a little good Treg karma my way... knock on wood, cross your fingers, do a chant, whatever it takes... and I'll be a grateful man.

I really want to love this car as it has impressed me more on two test drives than any car I've ever driven.

Nice to meet you all, and Kindest Regards,
Mark

Years ago when I contemplated an '04, I remember distincly all the discussion regarding teething problems. The common consensus was if was built after vin 40k, then most of the problems were addressed and resolved. Now we're in '08 and you have found one with 60k and full records of history. Seems to me that if the price is right, then you have probably found a solid vehicle. And if it includes CPO, then that's all the better. Comes down to the right price based on what youv'e presented. And considering what '04's are going for, they really have had the majority of theri depreciation.
Good luck!

JD power can say what they want, but after driving any of their top rated vehicles I've never said to myself "I've gotta have this". I've resorted to using JD power inversely..whatever they hate I'll probably fall in love with.

By now the '04s should have their issues settle, if not deal with them all up front with your dealer..there is a wealth of knowledge on here as well as many TSBs posted..read through them and you should be fine.

welcome aboard and congrats on the new machine!

Welcome to the club. You will love it much better after you take it out in the first snow. What a machine.

I'm a week into ownership of a high mileage 05 V8... and I LOVE IT!

Most luxurious and practical car I've ever owned - built like a tank and feels like one too!

I almost bought an 04 too but it was snatched out from under me two days after becoming available, When I returned from my holiday my 05 was available.

I've had good luck with VW's most of my life - as have many family and friends. Enjoy your new car.

OK, your Pathfinder was solid as a rock - My last 2 cars were Nissan Patrols (Pathfinder's big brother, not available in North America?). I did 500,000km in 6 years in 2 of them. As we say in Australia, built like a brick sh**house. Couldn't break them with a big stick. Then I bought the Touareg. As you say, they affect your brain (after 93000km I still smile with both halves of my brain whenever I get in it). You will love it. You have moved into the realm of a unique vehicle - all of that european refinement and german engineering - and you didn't have to buy a BMW or a benz. Enjoy!!

Somebody has my 04 V-8, and has a fantastic ride. It was all it was promised to be. The V-10 was deal I couldn't paas up or I would still be driving the 04. It went everwhere and was always reiliable.

I have an 04' as well and @ 78k mi. the only issue I am having now is the stepper motor I think. When I turn the wheel to the right It shakes so I am guessing it is that. I also own a nightmare, (Land Rover Discovery), so compared to that slow piece of s*** owning my Touareg has been a very, very good expierience. I am having an issue that has been common with the 04's and most likely this is one of the recalls you have had taken care of, double check just to make sure. Good luck and welcome to the club!!!!!!

GOOD LUCK! Welcome to the club...I have a CPO '04 V8 and almost up to 50k miles after 2 years. The stepper was the only real issue (besides little recall work). To see if you have a stepper issue, make a SLOW turn (like going into a driveway or parking spot). If you feel a jerking...you WILL KNOW that feeling...it is stepper (which I think is now solved by programing.

A lot of the issues are discussed on this forum.....you should have no problem with any little issues. It is a Solid Car..and FUN to drive! The only flaw is their navigation.

If you are thinking of Modding the treg---get the keyless start! I enjoyed it the most.

Thanks for all the Positive words!

Hi everyone, Thanks for all the positive words!! I picked up my Treg last night, and to say I am happy is an understatement! I am absolutely blown away by this car! As I said in my opening post, it really hurt to hand over the keys to my Pathfinder, as it has been a 100% reliable vehicle for 8 years. The instant I placed myself in that Teak leather interior of the Treg, my sadness turned to utter joy. This car is not only a nice looking vehicle, it provides a driving environment that is unmatched in anything I have driven or sat in. It "fits" me like a glove, and features like the lighted steering wheel, heated steering wheel, footwell lighting all combine to make you feel like you are dining at a hip candlelit resaurant (at night of course). VW really did this car right and all the "bells and whistles" (and there are alot of them) are very appropriate to improve the driving experience. I read the whole owners manual last night, and although it all seems overwhelming at first, it is not that complicated and is quite easy to learn if you just read the manual.

I did have one stroke of luck, the dealer could not find the factory CD's for the Nav, so they ordered me a full set of 4B's. I'll have them in a few days. I know that even with the updated CD's this Nav will not match the performance of my wife's Navigon 5100 (awesome unit), but I'll give it a try with an open mind. I'm thinking that the convenience of the integrated unit with steering controls etc will make up for the lack of some details.

Thanks again for all the positive thoughts and good Karma, lets keep it going!!

My 04 V8 has 72 k on it and the only major issue I had was that the waterpump went bad at 71k. Since it was only 9000 miles away from a new timingbelt, all work was done incl new thermostat (which was sticking) and a new serpentine belt.
Cost all together about 1700 dollars.
Everything else was updated within 50k and the only other non maintenace thing was new coil packs. These will go guaranteed(mine 2k out of warranty) and new ones (8 of them were 180 dollars purchased online. Dealer would have been close to$500

Excuse my ignorance, but what are coil packs?

The waterpump on mine was done already by the previous owner.

Congrats again Mark!

Some things to be aware of:
- Your front tires WILL GET DIRTY. Tregs are known for Brake Dust. (I think most German cars have this issue). I found it occurred considerably more than my 4Runner
- As many bad stories you hear about the TPMS (in old posts). I found it VERY usefull. I once though the system was going crazy when it was going off (as tire was inflated), but there was a nail stuck in the tire!
- If you like Atari 2600 --- you will LOVE VWs navigation system...it get the job done..but not very high tech.

Good luck again! They are SOOOOOOO Much fun to drive!

I'm the original owner of my 04 V8. The only problem has been a bad gas cap. I love this thing! It is so much fun! Good Luck with yours!!!

New Owner too!

:drunk:Just bought my new T-Reg and I Freakin Love it! If feel like we are all so lucky to be in on a GREAT Secret and have our own Soceity. I plan on decking it out with as many accessories I can (my wife lets me) buy. I am currently looking to get the Green tint on the front windows. Took me a while to find a place that has the Llumar AT35-GR but I did. Great way to stand out from the rest of SUV crowd. Wasn't to open to the green tint at first but now I love it. adds a touch of class differant then the rest.
