Hi Guys
Just put a deposit on a 2021 170TDI. Getting a dealer fit tow bar.
Is this a bad decision as I will rarely use it?

Congratulations on your purchase...
I guess if you feel you need a tow bar then dealer fit is the best choice.
Thanks gatkins
I wasn't sure about the tailgate auto function with tow bar fitted.
I pick it up late Feb. Looked at all makes around 100k but Touareg just seems like the best value.
5 yrs free servicing also.

Congratulations, have had my 190TDI Premium for just over a month now, and what a car!. Fitted Tow pack through dealer last week for $2400. Took a full day and lots of work by them on getting all the codes set correctly. Had a quote from ISP for a HR setup at $1600 but the ISP guy begged me to get an OEM. He said the too much effort and trouble for them. Only downside with the OEM is the closeness of the wiring pin bracket to the bar. Looks like that prevents fitting a lockable hitch. Tried 2 and neither could be fitted.

I know South Australia is one.

We were holidaying there once, and our hitch (with ball etc) was attached - but no caravan to be seen. Several people commented that it was deemed illegal in South Australia.

I haven't looked for anything official, but heeded the advice, and as a matter of habit, I never leave the hitch in situ when not in use.

Fair enough, good to see documentary facts quoted, many thanks for following up!

Oh so what you are saying is that the fishing rod holders often mounted on bull bars, bull bars and other miscellaneous bracketry including bike racks and spare wheels are illegal?
I am not a law maker or police officer but there seems to be a glaring hole in that legislation. Or just a lack of execution.

Yes agreed fishing rod holders on bull bars would be seen as not technically a requirement for the vehicle but externally mounted spare wheels could arguably be seen as a technical requirement for the vehicle.

Still, the language used in the ADR seems a bit basic. An enforcing officer could spin this to his advantage for judging anything on a vehicle if challenged by a driver to hold his ground I'm sure.

As expected, when I took delivery a couple of weeks ago the foot function did not work. Booked in for first service today to see if they can get it operational. Salesman promised it would work as they put a tow bar on the GM's V8 and it works fine. We'll see.
Other than that I love it.

I wouldn't miss the tailgate kick thingy if I didn't have it.

No towbar but the kick thing still has a mind of its own, sometimes refuses to work unless I pay with skin from my leg, and is a good way of getting an uppercut to the chin when it finally works and you have a heavy box in your hands.

Maybe it's user error 🤪
