So I just bought a CPO 2004 V8 with about 33k miles. I love everything about it. Well, minus the peeling interior panels but they're getting replaced by the dealer. My big problem is that I just can't get comfortable. I have the power seats. Within 5 minutes of driving some part of my back or legs hurt. I've tried all different seating positions and nothing seems to work. It seems like the seat bottom has these side-bolster-like ridges that cut into the beck of my legs. And if I adjust things so that's not so bad, my back aches. It feels like the seat back has a lump about 2/3rds the way up that is the source of the problem. At this point I'm thinking about where I can get some kind of seat cover or pad. But the leather is so beautiful I hate to cover it up! Has anyone else experienced this? What did you do to fix it?

Cheers,
Jake

Have you tried seeing a Chiropractor? Seriously I am not trying to be a smart a$$, but I LOVE the seats in the Treg. I have driven to Florida twice non stop for 19 hours without a single ache. Have you tried a seat pad that will support the lower part of your back? Maybe that will help. BTW welcome to the Club!

Haha, nice. Well prior to the Treg my only car was a Miata. Which isn't the most universally comfortable car on the planet. But I have no problems there. Yeah, basically I think it's going to come down to some kind of pad. Thanks for the welcome.

It took me a while to find a comfortable position too...try setting the seat bottom higher than you normally would feel is "right". I find I was setting the seating too much like I was driving a sports sedan, when I put it into a more truck like position it felt a heck of a lot better.

Well I did mine Certified Pre-Owned. My sales guy said that as part of the checklist for the certification they had to replace them (it also got a fresh set of tires :)). Since mine was already out of the original warranty, the CPO, basically gives me a 2yr/24,000mi warranty from my date of purchase.

Yeah I've played with the lumbar quite a bit. I generally need a little bit more lower back support on long trips. In the Miata I'll roll up a hand towel or t-shirt and stick it there. But I only need to do that on 4hr+ road trips. On the Treg the adjustable one has helped. It doesn't get quite low enough, but I have it inflated most of the way.

I took me about 2 hours to get comfortable after picking up the Touareg from the lot. This was made worse by the fact that I've got sciatica as well. What felt comfortable initially ended up being painful within 30 mins. After about to hours of minor adjustments I found my setting and programmed it in. I've been fine since then. I don't what I'll do if the memory setting ever gets erased though... =(

The other thing to keep in mind to is are you staying upright in the left-right direction? Some of us have a tendency to lean on the center arm rest/console with our left hands on top of the wheel; this can really throw your back for a loop.

I'm an Old F**rt (66 y.o.) who has low back problems.

I've found that it invariably takes a period of adaptation to become comfortable in a new vehicle. My suggestion: set the seats up for max comfort, then leave them that way for 6 - 8 weeks. I suspect you'll do better.

We've had our '07 Egg for ~20 K miles. Our longest single-day trip has been c. 500 miles (Beckley, WV to Lansing, MI). Even my aged body has dealt with this distance/duration very well, and I no longer dread long trips in our Egg.

Use the seat heaters in moderation to minimize low back pain.

Best regards.

Maybe its just me but excessive use of the seat heaters also make me uggg....need to go to the restroom...in a HURRY. Very uncomfortable if you are in a remote area and trying to find a restroom

Thanks Nick. I tried that higher position and found it a lot more comfortable. I'm still playing with the back angle and lumbar, but my legs are a lot happier.

I find I still tinker with the seat adjustments now and then. Some days I need a little tweak to make the position a tad better. But glad I have an extra memory position for the original setup - wife has the third.

GoBerserk, did you ever find a comfortable seat position? I just bought a 2004 V6 (new to the forum as well) and I thought by back ache was all in my head. Interesting to hear somebody else has had the same problem. I'm still working on it but I agree with nickm that a higher position seems to be a good start. I have a little more tweaking to do.

Don't want to sound like an ass, but shouldn't these matters be rectified during the test drive?

If a vehicle's seats feel uncomfortable to me, I simply don't buy it. That said, the Touaregs seats are the most comfortable seats I have ever had the pleasure to sit on period! In fact, I remember thinking to myself about 10 years ago, that if I won the lottery, one car that I would never buy is the Lamborghini something. Why? Because I sat in one for a good 15 minutes and realized that the seats, for my type of frame anyways, where just terrible.

For reference, I am 6 foot 4, and lean.

You can change the seats on the Lambos before you buy or have them custom made. But if you do win the lottery, I'll trade you my V8 for the Lambo and put up with the backache.

Oh if it were the Countache I would! If you're 6'4 your head will touch the roof. Ya I'd trade you if it were of those alright.

I'm PMing you my address and phone number. Call anytime collect to give me the shipper's number and track ID - just don't get it in white; I might not find it till summer

Dude I agree with you that the Touareg's seats are probably some of the best ones I've ever experienced but, my manual adjusting seats don't have lumbar support, which is something I miss.

For the life of me I can't figure out why my 10 year old Jetta has lumbar supprt in BOTH front seats, but my Touareg which costed almost three times as much, doesn't have it... :confused2:

However, regarding your test drive comment, in my experience I can only really judge if a seat is good after about 500 - 1,000km in it, which is not really possible during a test drive.
