New 2012 Touareg in Canada...

Hey all. A couple weeks ago I started the process to change out my 2005 Dodge Magnum for an SUV...and stumbled into the Touareg stats. This past Friday I started enjoying my 3.0 TDI, 8-speed automatic w/ tiptronic shift Execline w/ 406ft/lbs of torque. Every day I discover something new and grin like a kid in a candy store. For a soldier who's spent entirely too long away from home over the years...this is like driving around in a luxury car commercial. This vehicle is the culmination of many hardships brought into focus on one solid fact...paid my dues for queen, country and my brother & sisters in arms and I'm happy to be here.

Dark Flint Metallic. I wanted the blue but there weren't any left in the 2012 model. Well, except for this one out West...but apparently that one was beat to a pulp by hail and the dealer was going to sell it as is and 'pass on the savings to the customer'. I went with my second choice.

Yah. No matter which way you slice it...a bad ass piece of luxury indeed. An impressive feeling when you move to pass someone on the highway and you go from 90-120km/hr in about 12 feet...lol. I'm exaggerating slightly I know...but there's no denying those horses under the hood. It's kind of like taking rapid fire pictures of a close range explosive demolition. If you weren't already taking pictures before ignition...it's already time to get out of the way.

Congrats Saloveku!

I've already ordered a set of winter tires, slush mats, mud flaps, sun/wind deflectors for the windows, a cargo mat (gotta keep the interior as clean as I can for as long as I can) and I was mulling over the fender flares...but those puppies are damn expensive for some moulded plastic. Anyone with any other ideas? Oh...and of course I ordered an Execline travel mug, coaster and VW flask...lol.

I also want to say thank you for your service to Canada, supporting our way of life, and helping make the world a better place.

Congratulations too on your new ride. I'm sure you're going to love it.

As for the fender flares... I bought them for my 2012, also a dark flint metallic, but only a Comfortline trim. I've had many weeks of pain thanks to the fender flares, though hopefully that's now over with. Here's what happened to me and my wife (abbreviated version):

- Flares installed by dealer before delivery at end of Dec. 2011.
- One part came almost completely unglued at end of Feb 2012. Others also had started separating.
- Reinstall of original flares was badly done... gaps, alignment, etc. That bad effort took more than a week. I complained and then had to wait for a new set of flares and a few months for VW Canada to obtain a new adhesive from Germany.
- New flares installed during the last week of May 2012.
- Late June 2012, one piece started separating again... told to return to the dealer. Three more days without my Touareg, they added some more glue and it seems to be holding now.

I have been somewhat compensated for my time. I had a loner car most of the time that my Tuareg was in the shop, my dealership covered the first service (about $220), and VW Canada gave me a $200 voucher to use at the dealership later. Given the time I've lost use of the vehicle and other factors, I don't feel that the compensation has been adequate... but I'm over it now.

Since then, things seem to be good. However I have lost all confidence that the flares will stay on for the long term. Fortunately, because I bought them installed at delivery, they are covered by the VW warranty. If they do come off again I will ask VW to simply remove them and repair the fender areas as required. I will also be seeking a refund and additional compensation.

The flares do make my Touareg look a little different from others... though there aren't many T3 Touaregs in my area, at least not yet. Given what I've been through I would not add them again without a long term guarantee that I'm not wasting my money and time.

Good luck to you whichever way you go.

Thanks IntProst. It has been my honour to serve beside some of the most dedicated and professional troops I have ever worked and fought along side.

As for the fender flares...holy frack!! I was curious as to why moulded plastic fender flares cost so damn much. Four flares for the price of the electronic rust module...installed? More than a little ridiculous in my eyes. I was considering the flares but now, hearing that they aren't even properly secured...ridiculous. Incomprehensible that they wouldn't have a better mechanism for securing them. Thanks for the insight...that's indeed messed up.

Sorry buckaroo104...I never knew what dealership it was at. I was looking for a blue Touareg and was given the details. I stopped the conversation before getting to where it was beyond 'out West'. As the dealership was unwilling to repair the damage...I got the distinct impression the damage was impressive.

I've had my veteran plates for quite some time actually...but good advice regardless. Thanks.

I'm a huge tech fan and that compass is all kinds of cool simonster. Almost as cool as the 3D nav map :)

Being an ex-serviceman you will appreciate having something built for purpose, I think the Treg will keep you smiling for a few years to come.. Welcome the membership of the house of fun!

Oh...I never said I was an 'EX-serviceman'...lol. Just said I used to be with the engineers out of Petawawa, Ontario. ;) My respect and thanks to you for your serivice.

You're absolutly right though hedditch...I see long-tern grins via this Touareg and I'm glad to be here. It was one hell of a trek to get here (cause Afghanistan is not a combat engineer-friendly place) and I hope to enjoy it all for years to come.

Just got a whole wack of accessories today. Mudflaps, window skirts (well...the rear set are still on the way from the US), monster slush mats and my personal favourite...the cargo protector.

Of course the Execline coffee mug is pretty sweet too.

The winter tires should be here in about a week. All a bit pricey but I'm taking a trip to Vancouver this winter...and I'm gonna be ready.
