After driving for longer than I should have being unsatisfied with the tone of my V8's exhaust, I finally had the OEM muffler removed today and replaced with a dual MagnaFlow setup. I also had them put dual tips on the new mufflers while they had it on the hoist. I like the look of the dual tips and I also like the idea of keeping the stock setup in one piece in case I ever want to put it back on. I think the sound is perfect! Definitely a lot throatier and more of a growl when the accelerator is pushed, but not annoyingly loud when I'm driving with a light foot. I strongly considered straight pipes since I have have the secondary cats on, but after hearing it run and rev before they put the new mufflers on, I decided that might be just a LITTLE too much growl. I kinda liked the sound though :)
All in all, I got both mufflers AND both sets of dual tips for under $400. I couldn't be happier! The shop that did it is great. The owner knows cars and really cares about what he does. I'd recommend them to anyone that lives close! I've never posted pics or video, but I'm going to try. I won't be able to get the video posted until tomorrow though.

Here's a few more. I included a few of the stock muffler too in case anyone wanted to see it. I don't know how much it weighs, but the new setup has to only weigh a fraction of the stock muffler!

Here's a before clip and an after clip. I don't think the tips are MagnaFlow products. I checked out their web site and I don't think the tips they show are the ones that were installed. The shop carries a bunch of different tips, so I'm guessing they're some other brand. They're nice heavy double walled stainless steel tips though. And for $60 apiece! :)

I'm trying to talk him into fabbing some bypass pipes for me. He won't budge on his policy of cat removal though. I'm gonna keep working on him :)

That looks and sounds amazing! When I see exhaust systems like this, that both sound and look really good, I have to wonder why in the world anyone would spend $2000 or more for an exhaust system, when something that sounds so good can be had for a fraction of the cost.

Nice job!

One the highway and wth "normal" usage, the system sounds very similar to OEM. When you step on it though, it really growls. That's why I like it so well. :) I seriously considered going with straight pipes, but they would have been loud all the time.

I don't know a lot about the systems that can be bought for $2000 and up, but I'm TOTALLY happy with this set up. 2 stainless steel mufflers, 2 new stainless steel tips and installation for under $400. How can you go wrong?!? :)

The ONLY downside........ The "pop" is still there. I HATE the pop! It's much less noticeable though because of the growl. Does getting rid of the secondary cats eliminate it??? Just curious.
I think Evan Hughes replaced his secondary cats with the Fabspeed pipes and the 'pop' was still there. A crossover might help mitigate that sound. You could probably have that same shop weld in an 'X' type crossover somewhere in the system where the exhaust comes together in the middle.

edit: Seems like it would be easy to weld in a crossover near the front:

That's a pretty good price. Where are you located? I wish we had a shop like that here.

Nice exhaust. My factory suitcase muffler on my '08 V8 is flat with out the bulges. Another running change for VW. I have the bypass pipes, Vibrant 12" bottle resonators in place of factory resonator, and the factory muffler and have been pleased with the sound.

As others have said, it makes no sense to drop 2k on an aftermarket system when you can use a good shop to make the right system at a fraction of the cost.

Would you be able to provide a sound clip of yours? It doesn't have to be a video. Your setup with the resonators sounds interesting.

Nice mod. OEM version sounds as if your v8's been eating burritos for a week. The "pop" ain't so bad....refer to it a a "b-r-r-rapp"
Indeed it does, but I have noticed other make this sound while others don't? Mine sounds much creamier!

Listening to that 2nd vid again, what I don't understand is why his "pop" or crackling sound is so pronounced, when my OEM V8 Touareg exhaust makes none of that? Mine is much creamier...This one almost sounds like there is a baffle or ceramic loose somewhere.

Am I the only one to make this observation?

My only complaint with mine is that it is a tad too quiet. Just a bit more note would be perfect. Contemplating substituting the two seconadry cats with two Maganaflow round straight through resonators that I have needlessly sitting around on my garage floor. OR just replacing the rear suitcase oem muffler with a Borla's top of the line chambered mufflers, and proceed after that. Still not sure which end to begin from. Cat or OEM muffler.

I'm not sure how critica it is for the muffler to be Touareg specific as long as it fits into the space available on the underside of the vehicle. When I had my work done, the shop showed me a couple different models of MagnaFlow mufflers that would work and asked me to choose. I'll have to look on the receipt and see if a specific model number is listed, but I know mine are oval shaped and brushed stainless steel. I was shown a little bit smaller round(cylindrical) shaped muffler but choose the oval because I liked the look a little better and thought the sound would be a little deeper and throatier.
I havent had ANY issues with the mufflers and LOVE the sound!

I purchased the tips to put on my 07 v6 (i did changed out rear lower valence for a v8 valence), and took it to meineke and was told that tips will not fit correctly with my stock v6 muffler.I would have to change it (muffler) out.If chose to change it to something like Heaths muffler would it change my sound at all seeing that i have a v6 instead of v8???

I took my exhaust off over the summer for about a week and loved it. AWESOME sounding...Im also seriously debating straight piping it also. Just don't know if i can deal with the loudness ALL the time.

I have a question though, do stock exhausts have an H pipe or a pipe that runs between the 2 pipes right after the secondary cats built in... because mine does and i just figured it was stock. But now after reading this thread, don't think it is.

Anyways, the stock exhaust sounds great but i want it to be louder, much louder.
