Looking for 18" wheel rims

Anyone got a couple of 18" Touareg wheels in their shed that they would like to sell? I need a couple to replace my pump-up space saver for the Outback, and 18" are proving difficult to find in Australia.

I'm looking for 8J x 18" wheels with 5x130 lug pattern and 57mm offset. VW Karthoums would be my first choice, to match the four I have already, but I'd be interested in Dakars, Manhattans, Fat Boys or Valleys ... or any other OEM wheels that would fit.

Here are the different styles:

Have you tried Gumtree?
You may have to buy a set of four and then split them out
Currently four Porsche Cayenne 18 wheels on Gumtree for $695
4X18INCH PORSCHE CAYENNE TURBO ALLOY WHEELS OEM SET 5X130PCD | Wheels, Tyres & Rims | Gumtree Australia Bankstown Area - Georges Hall | 1075732681
used search term VW Touareg wheels
or this single one, but a bit pricey
Volkswagen Touareg Karakum 18 inch Wheel - NEW (one left) | Wheels, Tyres & Rims | Gumtree Australia Gold Coast South - Elanora | 1075427267
There were also some other 18 inch Audi and Porsche wheels - remember the Q7 and Cayenne wheels will fit the the Touareg.
Also try eBay Australia.
Good luck, ket us know how you go

Don't mean to hijack this thread but just in case you decide to have an offset of 53 then I have just taken out all four 18" Karakum wheels (excellent condition no kerb marks) and still have very good tyres (Toyo Versado CUV) if anyone is interested - Pick up Sydney or arrange courier yourself.

Well I want some Black 20 inch for my R50 . Not after OME but after market. Need 10 inch wide and good load bearing. I can't find a shop on the net that sell this and thought maybe some members can point me in the right direction.

Thanks for the replies ...

PJOD, yes I'm watching Gumtree in the hope that some VW or Cayenne wheels pop up in South Australia before going Interstate. ... I don't need the wheels until end June so I will wait to see if I can track down some VW examples first.

I tried getting Karthoums through my UK VW dealer and also Solitaire locally in Adelaide, but they appear to be out of production ... the last sale by VW Germany appears to have been in 2011. I'm on the hunt for some Dakars to see if they are in production and can be ordered ... I think they look good and perhaps if I can get 4, I'll use them on the car and keep the Karthoums as spares (then I'll have two for sale, Ragman!).

The Audi Q7 18" wheel is a J8.5 with 56mm offset so should be OK and I will keep an eye out for a couple of them if I can't source a VW or Porsche wheel if time gets short.

Ragman, If you manage to track down 4 used Karthoums before me, perhaps we can split them 2 each between us?

Vinniv, I'll research if Karakums will fit a T1 OK ... I think they were fitted to later model years ... perhaps that will be the way to go.

Madyspop, Thanks ... I'll keep you in mind ... can you arrange shipping from the USA or UK if I have to source 18" from overseas?

I spoke to the local VW breaker and he has 17" wheels and suggested that they would be OK if the outside diameter of the tyre was the same as the 18" ones that I am using. The 265/60R18 Discoverer AT3's on my wheels have an OD of 776mm. I could match 17"s with 265/65R17 AT3 Light Truck tyres which also have an OD of 776mm.

Anyone have a view on running 18's and 17's with the same OD's together?

Cheers, Mike.

You must always run a Touareg with 4 identical tyres - same make, same model, same size, same tread pattern, similar tread depth so the overall diameter is more or less identical on each corner, so odd wheels . . . ?

However, if you treat them as you would the spacesaver and limit yourself to 80 kph MAXIMUM, that should be fine as the electronics can cope with overall diameter variations up to that speed but not above it when you will get transmission wind up with the potential for transmission damage.

On loose gravel/dirt or on slippery surfaces [ice, mud, snow] where the wheels can slip, you might get away with higher speeds but I wouldn't risk it.

Oh, almost forgot to mention it since I thought EVERYBODY knew this by now. . . 17 INCHERS DON'T FIT V10s!!:D

Hi Singh,

Yes, saw them thanks, but I'm still trying to source from Aus if possible ... don't need snow tyres ... left a set in the UK when I migrated!

Just to correct my earlier post, the Audi Q7 wheel has a 58mm offset, not 56.

Thanks Noobytoogy ... so that takes 17" out of the discussion!

Hope you are enjoying life down under!

Loving it ... particularly Adelaide, which is a real gem of a place to live. If I had known I was Australian by descent when I was here in 1973, working as a Jackaroo at New Crown Station, Finke, I would not have left and waited until 2012 to come back permanently!

I have worked in Oman and Saudi Arabia, so have done a lot of Desert 4WD travel, and I'm looking forward to doing some of the Australian Desert tracks ... did the beach run from Noosa to Fraser Island on honeymoon in 1981 and have recently been in the Flinders Ranges and done the Limestone Coast, Robe beach run, and the Great Ocean Road ... Aus is such a magic place to be Off Road.

Cheers, Mike

Update on my search for 18" wheels to run two spare tyres for the upcoming Anne Beadell and Gunbarrel trip ...

Couldn't source any VW Khartoum wheels, so I settled for buying four Cayenne Turbo II wheels off Gumtree ... they were a bit scuffed, but for $280 for the set they were a bargain. Liked them so much, I decided to re-condition all four (pic attached)

Then came the problem that the centres of the Porsche wheels are .5cm smaller than the Khartoums, so the 75mm VW caps (7L6 601 149) from those wheels won't fit! Searched the forum and read that people were filling Porsche centre caps and sticking VW transfers over them, so went to the Porsche Dealer in Adelaide to cost them ... blimey, almost 3 times the cost of the VW ones! Then went to the VW dealer and they thought the smaller 70mm later model VW centres would fit (7L6 601 149 BRVC) ... and they did! Pic attached.

Fitted two new Coopers and all good!

Cheers, Mike

I'm with you Mike, I've got a set which I use as my road tyres and I like the look more than the OEM 17" that I run with LT245/70P17 for towing and "offroad".
You seem to have done the refurbishment yourself? Much to it?

Hi TonyB,

I searched and watched a couple of "how to repair alloy wheels" on U Tube first, and then set to work sanding down the scuffs and dings to bare metal. Filled them with a metal filler (Permatex Liquid Metal Filler), then hand sanded using progressively finer grade sandpapers until smooth. Lightly sanded the whole wheel to remove the clear-coat and cleaned the wheel of grease etc. with Low Odour Kerosene Sprayed three coats of Acrylic Primer Surfacer, checking that there were no high/low spots, fine sanding if necessary between coats. Cleaned the wheels again and then sprayed three/four coats of Acrylic Wheel Silver. Cleaned again, and then sprayed three/four coats of Acrylic Top Coat Clear. All bought from Autobarn/Mitre 10 ... took it slow and read the instructions on the cans!

The spokes on the Porsche wheels stick out beyond the tyre wall (if a wheel falls over they damage), and it won't be long before they get scuffed again, but repair is easy ... unlike my road tyred 19" Atheo wheels, which are diamond cut and can't be repaired with a bit of filler and paint!

One side effect of doing the work myself is that, in the process I've managed to sand down my finger prints, so my iPhone doesn't recognise my thumb print anymore!

Cheers, Mike

Thanks Mike, doable project......I do have one rim that went the wrong way so that might be the first one do get done. How did you get the paint colour right (I guess if you did all it didn't really matter).

Wife Chris and myself are caravanning around OZ and are currently in Brisbane region.
I need a five spoke full size 17 inch wheel for a 2007 Treg. Can any one help?
ps - Treg is performing well towing 2900kg van. Only problem is with diesel particulate filter (code showing) which we are hoping to have professionally cleaned and refitted. Any good garage for this in Brisbane area?
thanks

Ok you can all stop looking, I have got a spare Khartoum 18" wheel for my Treg.
I bought the wheel from CARiD, freight to Australia was horrific but nothing compared to the shock when I opened the box to see a black wheel instead of silver!

the people at CARiD were very helpful and promptly sent a replacement wheel of the correct colour. Also they let me keep the wrong colour wheel as well.

I would have no hesitation using again and recommending CARiD they seem to run a very professional business.

I have 4 18" rims from a 2012 TDI (180) all with cooper tyres (with only 7k on them). If anyone's interested let me know.

I have sold the 2012 and replaced it with a 2015 rline so I don't have a need for the wheels now.
