So I installed my keyless start kit with some bumps in the road and as a result now the keyless entry won't work, VAG is saying that all the keyless entry antenna sensors are failed. After reading on the boards it sounds like I have a bad Kessy module and will need a new one, to the tune of about $700. :(

My 4 year 50k mile warranty expires in July 08. Do you think I could claim ignorance and just go into the dealer and say that my keyless entry stopped working and I don't know why and they will fix everything and replace the kessy module for no charge?

I took my 04 Touareg in for a KESSY module fault and the dealer stated I needed a new module which I expected based on the codes I pulled up. The service advisor told me there is an updated module (hopefully more reliable) but said that they would need to replace all 4 door handles since the new module won't code to the existing door handles.

I'm hesitant about having them replace all 4 handles as it involves painting and pulling the door apart. My concern is for color matching, the quality of the paint job, and the disassembly of the door. I would rather not open things up and chance introducing rattles.

Can someone confirm whether or not the new module requires new door handles as well?

Thanks

There are antenna's in the handles,Which may have been updated also,Marty
Now that's something I never would have thought of in my wildest dreams.
Antenna's in the door handles?

What is the advantage of this over 1 single antenna and 1 module opening the appropriate door?

assuming they're for the keyless entry/keyless start feature (without pushing the button on the remote to unlock), wouldn't they need 3 or more antennas to figure out where the key is? by using more antennas, they only need to sense a smaller/tighter area. and i guess via multilateration or something similar, the key location is can be determined.

walk up to the car, and the door can be unlocked by touching the handle. leave the keys inside, and the doors cannot be locked. (i think? but what about while driving?)

i think i read a FAQ here that said you can actually lock the key inside by throwing the key through the back window and closing the window. i guess the only way to fix that is to know the window's position and not allow the car to be locked with it open (but still able to start in case you want to drive with it open). i'll test this after i get my T2.

Got the Touareg back last night from the dealership and good thing for the extended warranty because the bill came out to nearly $4k for the work I had done to it. Everything works fine except for the rear hatch glass which I still can't open. VAG-COM shows the following code:

Address 05 -------------------------------------------------------
Controller: 7L0 909 137 B
Component: G2 Kessy 6840
Coding: 0147688
Shop #: WSC 26027
1 Fault Found:
00181 - Access/Start Authorization Antenna (in Rear bumper) (R136)
011 - Open Circuit

I wish the dealership had done a better job double checking their work. I hope I don't have to pay a second deductable for taking it in again.

My 2006 (W/O Kessy) will definitely lock me out, as I discovered at a wilderness trailhead 200 miles from home (and the extra key). The vehicle was locked. I walked up (key in my backpack), opened the hatch, tossed the pack in, changed boots, etc. Closed the hatch, the lights flashed and I was locked out!

See???

Open circuit...

What does that mean????

Is the wire cut or is it internal to the module????

I have antenna 1 and driver door open circuits...

Kessy Module Failure

Just had a complete failure this month (all handles and tailgate, lock and unlock) of the Keyless Entry system although my remote keyfob still operated fine as did my keyless start (OEM keyless start installed in my garage 3/08.) I have an '05 Touareg w/V8, Nav, Sport Package, etc. I will apologize for the length of my reply but hopefully my experience will save someone some pain. First some history:
- In '07: Outside driver door handle replaced when locking button failed.
- In 3/09: Installed Kenwood/Garmin/Parrot aftermarket 2-DIN headunit to replace OEM Navi. No problems.
- No problems after installing keyless start in '08. All worked as before.
- Keyless entry was "intermittently" quirky at times (from new and after the keyless start install.) I would lock the doors and as I removed my finger from the handle/lock-button the doors would unlock. I would have to step further away from the car (as if I was sneaking up on it) and I could get the doors to stay locked. I even made sure I wasn't pressing the unlock button in my pocket. If after a few tries that did not work, I would pull the key out and lock from the remote. Next time back to the car the problem would be gone for a couple of months.
- 3/09: I just purchased the vehicle off the end of a 4-year lease. It has ~84K on it now and runs and shows well (and no, I have not done the timing belt yet - I am considering timing and options there given the $2K+ cost for the job.)

Upon bringing it into the dealer for the keyless failure I was told the repair could be as high as $2,400 (including all the aforementioned new door handles, etc.,) at which point I asked to speak with the Service Manager insisting they justify such an expense. Having some significant experiece troubleshooting German equipment and vehicles I offered recommendations on isoloating the problem first before buying and replacing components at will to try and make things work. I also strongly suggested that it was unlikely that all antennas failed at the same time (the first suggestion) and that this suggested a problem with the module not the door handles. After leaving the vehicle with the dealer for 4-1/2 days so they could work on it in between other jobs and help to control the labor cost, they found that the driver side door handles and the antennas were OK. The passenger side handles and bumper antenna testing was waived by the service manager as my point was being proven. New Kessy module is now on order and will be installed later this month as I am traveling for a couple of weeks (FYI: Original P/N is no longer available and is not superseded - strange? New P/N: 7L0-909-137-CX-02G Control Unit.) Total Cost: ~$1,300 including earlier trouble-shooting and module cost of $770.64. Not totally thrilled about that, but it could have been far worse if allowed to continue down the earlier path. Saved about $1K.

This dealer has generally provided me with good service in recent years (my T-reg and 3 Audi leases since 1999,) and once I raised this up the chain of command they responded reasonably well. My only point to anyone is do not be afraid of insisting that the boss gets involved if you feel you are not getting all the facts (I am not trying to trash my dealer here.) You also should not have to pay for anyone's learning curve on your dime so like a doctor, get another opinion if you can. If anyone is interested I will write back on the results when the job is completed.

same problem with my 04 Treg, details please

Mine has had the had the habit lately of not recognizing the key, upon returning to the vehicle. The car wont unlock with the key fob. i have to insert the key in the door lock and of course it sets off the alarm. I then put the key in the ignition and nothing happens and the key is stuck in the lock. but if i wait a while for a while. it finally sees the key and all is good.

I changed the key fob battery, but it didnt help. could the fob itself be bad?

Any Ideas?

same problem with my 04 Treg, details please
You have all the details on the repair in my original post. The only thing I can add now that several months following the Kessy Module replacement that I have had no issues, other than the occassional "quirkyness" of the system recognizing my key when I grab a door handle or the tail gate. By and large I have been pretty happy with the outcome. Total cost as stated.

If you have any specific questions let me know and I will try my best to answer.
