Hey guys, about 6 months ago I bought a 2004 V8, nappa leather, air suspension, from my local VW dealer, I have all the service records, and it had been maintained at the dealer its whole life, it came with 56k mi and the extended warranty will last 5 years and until 110k, now, with this warranty i cant do any "engine tuning" like remaping or anything but what kind of mods would be nice, i was looking at the fender flares, and bull bar. Who makes a good bull bar? And seeing as my Reg is White, should I have the fender flares painted? They come the same color as the lower black plastic on the truck. Thanks to any help or suggestions!

Has the cambelt been changed? Time as well as miles wears them out. If it's not been done it's the first "mod"!

I was told by the dealer to just have it done at the maintainence interval, they said im do at 80k and I dont have any reason to think it needs to be replaced. Besides if out fails before than the warranty gets to fix any problem rofl

You've had bad advice from the dealer.

Like I said, these belts age with time not just miles but since it's your engine you're risking and not mine . . . good luck.

I also have a 04 with 50k miles and the dealer said 8 yrs or 80k as well. He said if it fails before then it will be covered under my extended warranty.

Like I said - bad advice. In fact VERY bad advice. And not what VW Germany now recommends in Europe.

The belt will look good under tension but when you get it off and inspect it you'll find loads of cracks in the material and you'll be very glad you changed it.

If I ran a V8, I wouldn't want to break my engine for the sake of doing proper preventative maintenance but if you want to cheapskate on running a premium car - fair enough - its your dollars and your choice.

bad advice indeed

When Honda introduced the timing belt on the Gold Wing they roached a few with great expectations and overly optimistic service intervals. Since then the guys with the calculators figured out that some parts really should be over engineered; timing belts are an excellent example.

It would seem to me, that if you have some information regarding shortened service intervals that would be of interest here. Personally, no one touches my vehicle and that will continue when 80k rolls up. Unless a bit of reliable information came to me suggesting a different course of action.

My experience (35+ years) tells me that these belts are engineered for twice the service interval; I have seen two at close to triple. Changed at recommended service intervals, a belt will keep a happy humming VW for 300 to 400 k; although I do change oil more often, and filters depending on use.

If you are not comfortable with the interval suggested by VW, of course you are welcome adjust them; it is after all your car. However, fear-mongering is never attractive and even less so with a british accent. If you know of a VW service bulletin please share; but don't frighten the kids (me) who are happy with their shiny new Touareg.

Honda has a very different approach to its engineering standards than the bean counters that, regrettably, have been runnning VAG for many years now.

Read post 21. Yes, he's overdone done the miles and the time, but I'm happy to bet [and scaremonger] that your belt wouldn't look much different as the compound in it has hardened over the past 7 years.

You're also probably about due for a new centre bearing on the prop / drive shaft too. It's another place where the rubber degrades over time as well as miles so get out, get under, and have a look.

Your warranty should cover it when it lets go, but it's not nice if it lets go big time as that's a tow truck job to avoid transmission damage, so some people are now changing the bearing as preventative maintenance. [For some reason VW deny there's a problem here too!]

Enjoy your car - the V8 is the best of the bunch - but you will need to spend money if you want to keep it in really good order.

And as for the accent, its not British, it's English. :D

Thanks I do have keyless, I was thinking of that, it didnt seem to hard at all, does anyone have any sugestions a far as tow bars and bull bars go, and to satisfy the little back and forth going on, I purchased a kit with the tensioners, belt, and water pump, im going to ask my father to use his garage and tackle to timing belt in the next month. He owns a fully equiped garage. And im sure with a few of his techs we can get it knocked out

Do the keyless start from the ol' Spock! One of the best mods to date on mine.

Don't listen to any mumbo jumbo on the timing belt. A dude at work last week lost his engine(well the cylinder head) on his 2002 Jetta TDI, because his timing belt snapped in 2nd gear while accelerating(ouch!). He bought this car used last year, in the hopes to save some $$$$ on fuel. He received the same abysmal advice on the maintenance interval, as you are seeing here and elsewhere on this forum sadly by a select few members. He bough the car to save fuel, and well, look what just happened....

He is looking at around $3000-$4000 repairs, on that TDI 4 banger. I can only imagine what it would cost on this Audi V8 engine!
