I bought one of his kits over the summer and finally got around to installing it over New Years. It's a very complete kit, and the install is straightforward.

Before the compressor was getting rattley - not super surprising as this is an 04 with 160k miles. With the new piston ring the compressor is barely audible!

Did you disconnect all of the airlines into the valve block to get the compressor to your bench?

 

No, I only had to unhook the brown line (spare tire filler) and the black line to the valve block (compressor output). To get the black line out I had to unhook the compressor from the bracket, there wasn't enough clearance.

I cut the clamp off the larger black intake line's rubber union by the wheel well and disconnected it there, it was easier to deal with that line off of the truck.

Because I didn't disconnect the valve block the suspension didn't deflate.

Hi guys,
New to the forum had a 2005 V8 with spring suspension best vehicle I've ever had. A accident later I have no a (new to me) 06 V8 with air suspension..Enter the issues......Only problem yet has been the "Running gear fault (workshop) " the compressor is noisy and sounds sick to me. All the air shocks were replaced 1000 miles before I bought it. Today first day in snow for me w the reg as well as the regs first time seeing cold temps it resided in Miami before coming to mo. it was 17° today I take off for work and the fault was same but in red and and said (stop) instead of workshop. The front of the vehicle lowered the the stops....In comfort mode auto height. Stopped the car turned on and off and let it warm up a little more ...Front raised and I went to work...Let the reg warm up tonight before leaving work ..No fault ....I get the running gear fault regularly. I feel as though the reg takes a long time to lower or raise... I'm thinking compressor....Any ideas

 

If the compressor is noisy replace the piston ring. Heck, I'd say most T1s at this point would benefit from a replacement piston ring.

Our truck used to take 3 compressor cycles to fill the air tanks (the compressor has a temp sensor and turns off when it gets too hot). Now it does it in one cycle

As always, start with a full VCDS auto scan when working on a Touareg. That will let you know exactly what the computer is upset about. "Running Gear Fault" can be caused by many different things.

I may be wrong, but I seem to recall there is a dessicant pack built into the air system which one or two people have had to replace when moisture defeated the pack and froze, but if your car was in a hot, dry climate . . .

Anyway, as above, start with a full VCDS scan.

 

I was going to take the pack out of my compressor and bake it, but I saw no evidence of moisture contamination in the system. If I was doing that I'd want new seals for that area of the compressor (I presume it has o rings on it too?)

 

If you've got the compressor on your workbench, do the dryer too...

So hats off to bagpipingandy!! Rebuild was super simple! Removal and install super easy. I found this super helpful..
Removal and installation of the compressor unit without solenoid valve. Volkswagen Touareg (from 2003 to 2006, the year of issue)
Only I highly recommend loosening the compressor mount assembly before trying to remove any clips or airlines.
Now my new treg raises and lowers with ease..No more fault codes and the compressor is nearly silent as opposed to before.Also after being in that area if you do not have road gaurds on that side I highly recommend them as to keep everything clean and dry ...Lots of connection and couplings you want to keep safe from the elements

Well faults came back today?.. I'm gonna check all the connections for a leak...Still dosent like going to full hieght setting...Find it odd not one PRESSURE TANK FILLING prompts today tho...I'm buying a VagCom ASAP...If anyone has suggestions where to start please let me know.
Compressor still quiet?. Seems it runs way too much tho.

 

The air drier is supposed to self rejuvenate. Dries incoming air. Releases the moisture to the air as it discharges. No need to replace the desiccant AFAIK.

 

Even if the dessicant self rejuvenates, I'd like to swap out the two filter pieces for clean ones. As long as I've got the unit on the bench...

Others have changed the dessicant too.
