Just out of curiosity, I have mine for 4 and a half years. Didn't done to many miles..about 40K miles..
Here is the list of what i have paid for, including of course oil and other maintenance items:
Oil and filter 5 times =>650$
Fuel filter once => 50$
Battery once =>120$
Propshaft bearing =>80$
A/C compressor rubber cupling and gear=>100$
Alternator rubber cupling and gear =>100$
One parking sensor =>80$
=1180$ in total..

Mistake on the title,can't edit it....

Tires not yet, toyo proxes..have more than 5mm thread left.. Previous owner changed them for me.. ;-) .. No winter tires, because temperatures here are now 15-17C .. Only last winter was snowy.. Brake pads are almost out.. I am expecting to se a warn message.. Rotors are still in great shape..

As for gas that BradB mentioned ;-)
I covered 60k kilometres, and given the average of 80-90 litres on 1000 kilometres I probably payed about 5000-5500$..

#8 ·
As the service history book says, the pads have been replaced 70K kilometers ago. So thats about 45K miles, and I believe the message will show up in about 5000 + 2K miles that I can drive it like that.. So i believe this ones will do 55K miles.. Also, i don't use brakes that much to b honest..

It's not expensive to run as such, just ****ing expensive when it goes wrong!

Over five years, at around 12,000 miles per annum, I reckon I've spend the equivalent of about $1,500 per annum on average including my warranty but excluding fuel [about $6,500], insurance [about $400] and the annual road licence [also about $400]. Depreciation is the equivalent of about $1,800 per annum

Add a bit for incidentals and its nearly a dollar mile!

I love this question. I did a quick jot of what I can remember being payed for on the Touareg in the last 5 years. The biggest thing is obviously gas which according to Fuelly, I payed $1.9k in the last 6 months (times by 10=$19k)

And more:
Gas $3.8k/year ($19k-$5k for gas price increases=$14k)
Oil Changes $200/year ($1k)
Catalytic converter $100 (rest under warranty)
Tires $1.5k
Brakes $1k
Chains $90
AC hose $600
Air Suspension strut $1.6k
Minor Accident $500 deductible
Misc. Mods $500
Vag Com $350
Pioneer navigation system $1.5k
Trailer Hitch $200
Window tint $175
Thule rack system $200
Headlights $150
Stuff I’m forgetting $600

For a grand TOTAL of $24k.

I'm sure it's not a record but damn is it an addiction. :)

New battery today, after only two years.. Died over the night.. Was showing first 11,5 V after I tried to start it it dropped under 10V. than I couldn't read even the odometer. Nothing... I bought Bosch two years ago, hoping its the best, and that will do at least five years.. It didn't. The Factory one Varta did 6 years. I bought Banner today, power bull 95Ah and 760A. When the car is not started it shows 13,5V never seen that much.. Here is a pic. 120$

When I replaced it, i got ESP light on.. but after driving a couple of metres, pushed the button and it went off..

I'm not quite sure it makes any sense to mix maintenance items with actual repair costs. I mean, the same engines are used in Audi A8's and VAG V6 models, so as far as basic maintenance goes like engine filters, AC, pollen filters, belts, batteries, engine sensors, etc, go, it's no different than your average VAG sedan.

@volkswagendude

Oh yeas it is, I consider the propshaft bearing as a maintence item. It lasts from 80K kilometres to 120K.. Thats how much lasts my belt in the golf, which is considered to be a maintenance item. Others VAG sedans do not have that. Its not always that something goes wrong,fe 4ePikanini unfortunately had to replace his engine, but thats one in 10k probably.. I also had to clean my intake manifold, but i never saw that the intake manifols was listed anywhere as a maintenance item. It needs to be cleaned every 30K kilometres, mechanic wants 50$ for it, but i learned how and I can do it myself. Someone else needs to pay for that, which makes it again a maintenance item.

The intake manifold gunking issue is well documented on most of the PD engines, particularly the 1.9L Jetta. It doesn't seems to be the case on the 2.0L PD of the Passat. I'm just saying that the same $$$ gunking issue exists on a $20000(when new) TDI entry level car, as it does on your 3X more expensive, top of the line Touareg. However, I will agree that it is not categorized as a "maintenance" item, and quite frankly, a shame that it's up to the owner to figure out on his own the hard way, either by wallet or by proactive measures to rectify this issue.

The drive shaft issue on the 5500lb Touareg is yet an other case of treading on the fine line of bad design and maintenance wear and tear, and thus once again, up to the owner to either use the wallet as the weapon of choice come break down time, or once again, proactive measures to prevent this from even happening prematurely in the first place. All in all, I will agree with you on these two issues, perhaps even a couple of other ones that you have not brought up as well.

I was merely stating and wanted to clear out to any noobs that might read all this at some point, that some guys who will list items from wipers, to pollen filters, air filters, brake pads, serpentine belts, batteries, HID bulbs, coolant sensors, oil changes, thermostat, timing belt, water pump, tires(from not doing annual wheel alignments like you are supposed to do on air suspension ones), catalytic converter failures after 120000km, need to realize that this is are not special occurrences applying to only the Touareg, and worst part everything I just listed, relying on warranty to cover, but will occur on many other sedans out there as well. Cats lifespan is what it is on most vehicles as a quick example, and will fail whether it be a 2.0L gasser Golf, or a A4 Audi. On to brakes, sure the Touareg is 5500 pounds, and therefore likes to eat the OEM brakes for breakfast(notice I wrote OEM ;), but then again, most vehicles over 3500 pounds will.

The funny part is, a buddy of mine spent more on his brake job on his 3-4 year old leased Toyota Corolla, then I did on my Touareg. No word of a lie, that is the truth. This is the point I want to attempt to clear up. Many of the aforementioned items listed in people's list of expenses on the Touareg simply go hand in hand with modern vehicle ownership.

I agree with you, exacly as you said that your friends corolla had more brake services than your treg is what i have been thinking when i asked this question.. And I was calculating how much did I spend on mine, and I can't compare it to my BMW for example. My BMW also has a 2.5 diesel engine, but its more expencive to run than my T-reg.. I have the BMW for a few months and I already payed more than 500 euros on maintenance items only, more than for the touareg in 4 years. And its a sedan, not a big luxury suv.. And i drive it less than the touareg..

Second owner of my 05 V8 got it with 130,000 miles currently has 149,000. Had to replace:
Tires:650 TWICE
Brakes: 200 TWICE
Oil:80 per change twice
Transmission Valve Body: 1600
HID Bulbs: 60 three times
AC Recharge: 230
Wheel Alignment: 120 Twice
A couple more things totaling 150 I just dont remember what they were called.
Though some of these things have been my fault. These amazing cars are VERY expensive to maintain!

Wow, tires are expensive there.. Why didn't you try Albania, since you go that way to UK? do you run 19/20Ëť? You could find 19ËťMichelin tires for about 600Euros for a set in Albania :) Don't ask me where they get them :)

#27 ·
Don't know in English but there is in my Language. Albanians still don't pay taxes as they should. Lots of stuff you can find there a lot cheaper. I have 17ËťContinental's on my BMW, year and half since I bought it and still in great shape.

Deviant, I forget that you didn't go trough Albania. Still, worth a try to get good tires. And BTW why Y speed rating? Its not that you're going to achieve that speed in your V10.
