FYI, I too have been searching for this adapter with no luck from a VW dealer nor my Porsche mechanic who had previously installed a unit on an older Cayenne. I finally called VWoA for help and guess where they sent me....to this thread! You guys are awesome!

Also, after talking with a Tekonsha tech we decided the Primus IQ was all I required as I am towing a 2 axle trailer with electric brakes on 1 of those axles. Does anyone have a reason I should go with a P2 or P3?

update: I finished the install but had to go a little further. In pic #2 of the original post TX-1 is looking straight up from the foot well with the front of the vehicle at the top of the pic. I couldn't identify the adapter so I removed the 3 bolts holding the black plastic bracket ( the inverted U shaped piece). 2 of the 3 bolts are visible in the pic (the silver 10 mm hex bolts) and the 3rd is below the one on the right about in line with the last row of fuses (the tip is visble nest to the fuse box). They were lightly torqued and not overly hard to replace. I was careful not to over-tighten. Wiggling the bracket enabled me to more easily identify and pull out the adapter although I pulled it out toward the rear of the car giving me a little mre slack I believe. If you cant find it following the OP instructions you might try this as well. Good Luck and let me know if you need any clarification.

brake control connector

Thanks for this info. I had a 2006 V8 and took my brake controller and the wires and clip going to the factory installed plug with me when I sold it. Does anyone know if the connector and wires I used for the 06 is going to be the same for my 2013 TDi? That would be awesome but somehow I think that might be too simple for VW to let that happen.:-k

Hi RogPodge,

Yes, it will fit. I just check the TB0021 (tech bulletin pdf file) from Tekonsha wich is good for the 2005 to 2008 model and I used the same VW parts number to order them for my 2013 and they did fit perfectly.

Spot on however you can cheat if you have an after market lamp controller, as I did until I swapped it out for the real thing All you do is connect the brake lamp output signal from the after market controller to the signal wire on the green colored connector in the right rear quarter panel. This green connector is the feed back to the dashboard ( as well as the return feed to the trailer brakes)

Stuart, can you elaborate on your fitting,eg "as I did until I swapped it out for the real thing" ?? I had an autoelec fit my brake controller but he didn't use the prewired module, it works but could I do it better, many thanks

had a '12 TDI that my trailer shop installed a brake controller in - piece of cake. just got a '14 with factory tow package. same trailer shop tried to re-install my drawtite controller.

he can see the plug under the dash but can't get to it. dealer is useless. i'm sure the answer is here but i'm jammed for time and need to make a decision on an event for this weekend. Is there a part number or a pig tail that can be used to plug into factory plug?

TX-1...THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! After poking and probing around under my dash for more than 2 hours (hands all scuffed up) I gave up and….hallelujah I found your post. So then it was round 2 and I found the little sucker exactly where you said it would be…..up and behind the end of that strut stuffed (**hidden**) behind other felt padding. It was impossible to see until I had pulled it out. Why in the world would Volkswagen hide it so well!
I received the prodigy P3, connector housing (#1J0-972-782) and 2 wire/terminal assemblies (#000-979-228) today so now it should be smooth sailing I hope!
Thanks again!!

back to brake controllers 101 please.

I have wired a Hopkins "in sight" break controller on an old Land Rover that I had to wire into the system using the brake switch on the foot pedal. I ran all the wires and used the relays as instructed. I thought that meant I kinda knew something..

I wish to use the same one or buy a new one to use on my 2014 treg that has the tow package.

I read here that there is a plug I must access which must mean that there is a plug I need that is vehicle specific and that means i do not have to do all the same wiring as before.

But further reading and calls made to etrailer I find that there is not a plug for this car and I will have to create the same system of relays and stuff as the land rover.

Calls to Volkswagen regarding the two parts mentioned in this thread were dead ends as they said they just sell kits for cars that do not have the package. The item numbers did not help for some reason.

This leave me very confused.. I am sure I am missing something that is preventing me from even knowing where to begin.

Please help..

Thanks
Rick

Rick….From what I have read in other posts in this forum, If your touareg came with the factory tow package/hitch plus female socket for a hitch connector (flat plate cover with “blank” that inserts inside the female wired socket), it will definitely have the brake controller connector under the dash. Follow the post by TX-1 to a tee and you will find it, mine was up and behind the end of that strut stuffed behind other felt padding. It was impossible for me to see it, I found it by touch (the foam) as described by TX-1 and could only see it when I had pulled it out.

If you don't want a brake controller just buy a 7pin converter (Pollak 11-893P 7-Way Sealed RV OEM Socket) and you are done. Running lights, Brake Lights and Turn signals will all be working. The 7pin converter replaces the flat plate cover with blank that inserts inside the female wired socket. There is a plate where the socket goes, just remove the 4 screws and dummy plug, then plug in the Pollak socket and use the 4 screws to attach the socket to the area the plate was in originally.

If you do want the brake controller, you will need to also build the harness.
Parts: 1 x connector, 1J0972782 2 x wires 000979228
You should be able to buy these from your local VW dealer. (I did here in Canada, not sure if you can source them from another supplier in the US)

Check out this post for install instructions

Thanks Rich.Dev for that response. I have installed the 7way and confirmed lights on the trailer.

I gather that the harness is for the power and activation of the brake controller which means no relay or further wiring needed once I get the correct leads from the controller to match the harness.

Brain wrap complete. I don't know why that was so hard for me..

Thanks again

Got 2015 Touareg and cannot find the plug. Its a RHD vehicle and I am not sure whether to look on the A-Pillar or on the CECM side. Any pointers peeps?
Follow the post by TX-1 to a tee and you will find it. It's not behind the A pillar, you have to remove the panel just above your pedals. Mine (plug) was up and behind the end of that strut stuffed behind other felt padding. It was impossible for me to see it, I found it by touch (the foam) as described by TX-1 and could only see it when I had pulled it out.

I have gentlemen. The vehicle is RHD though..... we were looking for 5 hours and nothing
You will not see it, believe me, took me more than 2 hours of poking and probing around. I found it up and behind the end of that strut hidden behind other felt padding. It was impossible to see until I had pulled it out.

Hi Obsession, mine is 2008 and in spite of all saying there must be a plug, it is not there in ALL Tregs, I have spent probably 10 hrs or more including seeing where it is in similar Tregs that actually have it and am now convinced beyond a doubt mine doesn't have THE plug. Apparently another tell tale is the is a plug near the tow modle in the boot but mine hasn't got hat either. John
