Was this a standard feature on any models? I am looking for a V6.

Is TCS disabled when the rear diff locks?

I'm looking for something as capable off road as an FJ (My dads) but with some luxury added like auto climate control & heated seats. H3 and LR3 dont get good enough gas mileage, XC90 isnt off-road orientated enough, The taureg looks pretty good.

Do you guys reach the EPA 16 city 21 highway easily? I know the H3 is rated 16 City 19-20 Highway, but the guys in the H3 forum struggle to reach those numbers.

Well, RDL is available as an option on the V6 - but I don't know how readily available it is...

If "TCS" = "traction control system", the VW world has "ESP".
Switching to "low range" doesn't turn ESP completely off, rather, the system alters the various electronic "aids".

It would take a long writeup on a forum like this, but the technology behind the Touareg's offroad capability is simply amazing (and I've experience in fairly Heavy Duty systems on GMT 800 & 900).

PS - getting around 16 ~ 17 MPG in suburbs, hit 20 MPG last week on I 95!
As to off road capability, well, the list of stock vehicles that can do better than the Touareg isn't very long...

Center lock is standard on all Touaregs. Rear diff lock was not standard on any models, but optional on all. Models that have it have a selector position at 6 o'clock on the differential control knob to lock the rear diff. The center locks at the 4 o'clock position, so if you needed to lock the rear (if you have that option), the center is already locked. Even without it, the brakes do a bit of a quasi-diff-lock similar to the FJ's A-TRAC setup. It uses the brakes to stop spinning airborne/low-traction wheels, sending power to the other wheels.

Not automatically, but you can somewhat kill the TCS (Actually, its ESP stability and traction control) by using the ESP off button on the console.

Mileage-wise, with oversized 265/70-17 (just shy of 32") tires, I'm getting about 15 in town with my V6. I generally am in the 17-18 range on the highway. The V8s are very similar to these numbers, with their city numbers being basically the same, and the highway numbers slightly favoring the V6. This is based off a comparison of TheMadHatter's V8 and my V6 caravanning back from the Colorado off-road Rally last year. I had more range than he did, at basically the same speeds over the same terrain. He did have a roof rack though, so that may skew it a bit, but I think I had 60 more miles left than he did when we filled up.

Yep, had a ball with it out there. Got a few cracks underneath on the plastic runners just inside the rocker panels, but other than that, it was A-OK. 8)

Just a quick question regarding your oversize tyres - do you have a full size spare? If so do you carry it all the time or just when you hit the dusty trails? If you don't carry a full size spare all the time are you comfortable that the space saver blow up spare will do the job for short distances - ie your not concerned about the size differential.

Hi Carson,

I do have a full size, matching spare that I keep with me at all times. It does eat up a large chunk of trunk space, but the nearly 3" diameter difference between the inflate-a-donut and the tires I run would simply be too dangerous to run, and probably very hard on the drive train. I have had a couple instances where I've taken the spare out for an extremely short time (i.e. picking up folks from the airport with luggage, etc) but I have always put it right back in as soon as I can.

One more question, what is a dead givaway that the turegg has the cold climate package?
Either the rear passenger air console in between the two front seats has the seat heat wheels (at lower right and left, just like you have on the front seats) or the little button behind the right side of the steering hub will, when pressed once, turn on a green steering wheel symbol in the MFI display indicating that heat is being applied to the wheel. Enjoy.
