It is probably more capable than you might imagine, but it is NOT air suspension and you will run into serious clearance problems.

It does not have rear lockers unless it was special ordered with that option.

It does not have skid plates.

The skid plates are a bit of a joke anyway. I order them with the car thinking that they were a serious accessory, only to find out its ABS plastic. What good does that do besides maybe a pebble or two.

As Rickanns said, it's more capable than many imagine. And though the Air suspension offers more clearance, (3.5 inches) the stock suspension is quiet capable. The skid plates are a joke, and there are many aftermarket metal plates out there. Good insurance against a killer rock.

As simply put as possible... it's more capable off-roading than most owners will be willing to take it. :)

And for those that are willing (aka "Me") then realize its too much work which in turn kills the "fun factor", and then decides that the Touaregs time is much better spend on the road with its 20's on.

Some will argue that though.

I live in CT and when ever I get a chance I have taken it through the woods and up the hills with no trouble what so ever to leave my house I can drive down the drive way or around my house up some steep hills and have done it a couple of times with my wife calling my phone as I reach the top of the hill and about to get back onto the road complaining about how it's a new car and that I'll break it by doing that but she has no idea of what the Touareg is capable of. One day I was going to show he and she threatened to jump out so I did it any way and proved to her what the T2 can do with no issue.

You are very correct. The skid plates are a joke. I did some serios off roading (live in India) and the plate were in pieces in the first outing. Have now got some very nice aluminium skid plates. Feel more comfortable. The Touareg is good off road. I have a V6 3.0L diesel. Happy off roading

I wish VW would stop trying to sell their plastic crap as a "Skid Plate". I also wish they could step up and offer a factory skid plate option. In lieu of that, I have installed the Dakar Offroad skid plate. It gets used often.

i just took mine through the Phoenix desert last weekend with the V6 and ABS skid plates and I mus say that thing is way better off road than any jeep I have ever driven. I was hitting bumps that made a butt pucker and it handled it great! I am not a rock crawler type though. I am more desert pre-runner style driver.

With the air suspension, it does rally style driving VERY well. However, always keep in mind that the nose is very heavy and will have a tendency to bottom out and come down hard on rocks. It is greatly aggravated with weight of the V8 and V10. This is where a real skid plate will come in handy.
