Hey all, was wondering if anyone has done any higher current alternator upgrades.

I'm interested in adding a beefy inverter to the treg but there is obviously a limit to that based on the alternator output (to an extent). I know the battery will provide excess current for surge loads but with the (I believe) stock 120 amp alternator there would be about a 1500w continuous limit.

If anybody has any bolt on recommendations for a 2004 v6 I would be very interested. I saw bosch makes a 150 amp that looks like it will fit but for such a marginal gain I don't think it's worth the $300+.

Thanks

I don't recall any previous threads on this.

Are you planning to run your inverter whilst underway?
My understanding on this stuff leads me to think that you should be looking at your battery(s) capacity rather than the alternator to determine your inverter limits.

My intention was to have it as a source to run some various electronics such as lights or small power tools and as a small backup power source. I would never run it without the car running, but my thoughts were the alternator would probably float whatever current it could to 12v system and then when that current draw is exceeded it would draw current from the battery. Obviously a starting type battery is not going to absorb too much a load for long so I figured the alternator is the bottleneck in this scenario.

There might be some alternative way to arrange this. I know the electronics system is finnicky in the treg to begin with so I don't want to do anything that is going to start dropping voltage and causing errors.

The space under the spare tire for the V10's second battery is available in your 2004 V6.

A second option you may consider is to put a large deep discharge battery under the spare tire to power your inverter. You can get a device to hook up that battery to the car's power supply to charge the second battery (Battery Isolator). The alternator in your vehicle should be up to the task.

Anyone done this? I’m looking at 370A High Output Alternator for 2013 - 2016 Volkswagen TOUAREG 3.0L V6 (181c.i.) | Power Bastards

And a deep cycle, prob yellow top battery from optima… I wish I had done this when I added the winch and did the timing and control arms same weekend…

going to add a bunch of batteries and solar and go off grid with the portable AC and inflatable yurts and see how the touaregs air compressor fairs… anyone using an antenna for satellite internet???? I guess not off grid just remote
